Rename server name with TS Licensing installed
by Guest Dylan- 6 replies

Hi, Is TS Licensing server tie to the host name? If I need to rename the server, do I need to call clearing house to re-activate the licenses? We have a TS Licensing server with 4000 XP complimentary CAL. I was going to build a new server and transfer the CAL to the new server. When I called MS clearing house, they said can't transfer comp CALs. There are some data on the this server that I'm moving to a new hardware but for those data to work, I need to keep the same host name for the server. Since I can't move the CALs, I'm hoping I can just rename the license server to release the host name for the new hardware. Will I break TS license serve…

Is there anyway to disable or remove the "X" option on the Terminal banner to disconnect a terminal session? I want all clients to go through the process of close out all programs and log off a terminal session. Adjusted the registry to remove the Disconnect option from Start-Shutdown, however, can't figure out a way to disable the "X". Terminal server is Windows 2003 Std. Thanks in advance.

I have a strange problem with Terminal Services. A SBS 2003 server running terminal services. When anyone tries to initially connect to server there is a 50 second wait before the logon screen appears. I been through the likely culprits - DNS is fine No Network shouts No disk activity or memory problems The server sits there for 50 seconds then kicks into life and displays the logon. This doesnt occur at the console of the server. I have monitored the network using a hub and Wireshark. I can see the initial communication, setting up session etc but then stops for 50 secs before continuing. Any help would be appreciated this has been bugging me fo…

Folder Redirection & Permission Questions
by Guest compsosinc@gmail.com- 5 replies

We are in the test lab right trying to configure Folder Redirection. Our first goal is to provide the same desktop shortcuts to the the Terminal Server users and we are having trouble configuring this correctly. Here is what we did: 1. Created a folder on the Terminal Server called TSUsersFR. 2. Within the TSUsersFR folder, we created a folder called 'Desktop'. So the path is \\Servername\TsUsersFR\Desktop. 3. We shared the 'TSUserFR' folder with share permissions for 'Everyone' set to Full. & we set the NTFS (Security) permissions with 'Everyone' set to Full (for now -we have read that we should set this to read-only but did not until we get it w…

Profiles Won't Load
by Guest Eric32- 1 reply

I know this issue has been around for a while but I can't find a solid solution for it. We're running a Windows Server 2003 Terminal Server (no roaming profiles). Every now and then we run into the problem where various users cannot login -- they get an error that their profile cannot be loaded. This particular server had this problem last year at one point and then was fine for several months. Now this week it's happening again. One day it was a few users, the next it was one or two users, and now today it's several. The workaround we've done is to rename their profile and have them login again (which creates a new profile). That's fine if it's one…

Getting correct regional settings

I have a farm of 4 terminal servers located in the US. My company recently aquired a company in the UK and they will be accessing the terminal server farm. How do I setup the terminal servers to show the time, date and currency in UK format? It seems that if I change it in Control Panel-->Regional and Language Options that would change it for everyone. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi, Stragne stuff is happening on the Terminal server. When users/myself login into this sever - it take a very long time 10-15 minutes. Nothing has changed to my knowledge if last few days. Everything worked fine few days ago. I don't see any errors that raise a red flag. But there is one thing. When I ping the IP of that server internally - I do see a request time couples times when I ping 50 times. Can someone shed some light on this issue. I have 3 terminal sever with unique IPs on the same network and this is the only server seeing the slowness issue. Thanks, P

TS users allowed to establish VPN tunnel!!
by Guest M. Glenney- 2 replies

We had this happen the other day. To me, it's a MAJOR security bug but I thought I'd post it here first to get some feedback before reporting it as such. I had a TS user connect a VPN tunnel to his home from our Windows 2003 Terminal Server. The user has no admin rights of any kind. Once the tunnel was connected the default gateway of the server was changed so that traffic was routed through the tunnel. He did all this with standard MS tools built into the OS. The gateway change was incidental. He did not set out to do that. Another thing that disturbs me is that I could not shut down the tunnel. We got lucky and one of our other admins recogn…

"RPC Server is unavailable" error
by Guest matt.olin@gmail.com- 1 reply

I have a Win2k3 terminal server that periodically gives domain users the message "RPC Server is unavailable" (local machine users can login however). It's been doing this for a few years and we always just rebooted it to fix the issue. I don't know what the cause is, but I have an easier fix which I'd like to put out here for any future victims of this issue: Update the hosts file ("c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts") in notepad. You don't even need to change anything in it, just saving the file causes windows to reset whatever it is that gets out of whack to cause my RPC issue. I don't know why.

Windows Desktop Search + Public Folders...
by Guest Billingsley- 1 reply
I have a Terminal Server on Windows 2003 Enterprise and Outlook 2003 installed for the users. I am looking for a way to index certain public folders. There is a Catch-22 with with WDS + Terminal Services. WDS requires you check the box "Download Public Folder Favorites" but in TS you can't run Outlook in cached mode and hence can't check that box. Documentation says that WDS doesn't work unless you use cached mode even for your inbox but the ADM template defeats this. So, my question is: Is there a way to index public folders on a terminal server with WDS? If not, how do people effectively index public folders in a Terminal Server environment? TIA.
