Terminal Services to view only applications
by Guest whitethomas12@gmail.com- 4 replies

I am currently using Windows 2003 Terminal Services in application mode. I am wondering if it is possible to only have the end-user see the application versus viewing the server desktop along with the application. I know I can configure the service to open the application upon login, but I do not want the user to open the desktop; similar to citrix Thank You

Windows Server 2003 Terminal Server Smart Card Redirection Issue
by Guest FrankHagen- 3 replies
Hi, please help! The terminal server will redirecting everything I select/permit except for Smart Card Readers. After searching for a long time, all I can find is information related to using smart cards to authenticate a terminal session. What I need is for the user to be able to use their smart card inside of the session itself for accessing a webmail provider which requires a smart card for access rather username/password. I have tried all of the settings I can possibly find on the TS for smart cards - GPO set 'prevent smart card redirection' to disabled. I made sure the users are using the most current version of RDP client, and that they have…

by Guest WetBehindEars- 15 replies

I would like to implement a TS server in our environment. My question to you guys is how much does the Windows Server 2003 license cost and how much are the CAL's for the TS server? Do I have to purchase just as many client access licenses as I would CAL's for the TS? Or can I get away with one client access licenses and purchase as many CAL's as needed?

New OU for TS on Stand Alone server
by Guest Andy Dyble- 4 replies
Hi We have a few users logging into a dedicated server in a data centre using TS. We want to configure some options for these users. In our own server which uses AD (2003), we simply create a new OU for it. However the dedicated server is stand alone and this option doesn't look available. Can this be configured or is there another way to set users or groups not to be able to shut down etc. ? Many thanks Andy Dyble

Directing IE to Default Intranet Website
by Guest compsosinc@gmail.com- 1 reply

We have a Windows 2003 Server that is a DC and a TS (we know not recommended). We have users that will only be logging into the TS and they only use thin-clients to do so using RDP. We are not permitting the TS users to use the Internet Explorer on the TS -they have to browse the Internet using the IE connection on the thin-client. The thin-clients all using WindowsCE and IE 6.x. On the thin-clients, we would like IE to open to our internal website (Intranet) which is located on the TS (for example: \\TerminalServer \sharedfolder\OurWeb\Index\index.html). This is working fine for our domain users at our main location. We have an OU created, with a GP linke…

1. We have remote users logging into a TS that is also a DC using thin- clients. We have created an OU for the these users. Currently when they login to the TS they get on the Start Menu: Administrative Tools Windows Security How do we remove those in the GP linked to this OU? 2. We also have the IE and "Show Desktop" icons showing in the Quick Launch. How do we remove those? 3. We have icons showing on the lower right corner of the taskbar: the Network icon, the volume, and an SQL database icon for backup software. How do we reove/hide those? 4. When logged into the TS, the screen goes blank after so many minutes -such as a power saving featur…

We have a Windows 2003 DC (also being used as a Terminal Server -ugh) and we have setup an OU for our remote users and linked a GP to that OU that we modify to permit certain functionality. When we use gpupdate/force at a Command Prompt to update the GP, it does not work. If we reboot the Server, the changes to the GP take effect. Does anyone know why this is?

Adobe Reader and TS

We are supporting a TS that is also a DC -ugh! They are using WYSE thin-clients with XP embedded to connect to the TS. They use Internet Explorer connection on the thin-client to browse the web and need to either view PDF files. Adobe Reader is not installed on the TS/DC. What would be the recommended process for getting these thin-client users to view PDFs? Thanks

Moved Terminal License server - CAL's not showing issued license
by Guest PghTech- 2 replies
We moved our existing Terminal License server to a new 2003 server. By de-activating the old Terminal License server first, the existing 3 (per device) CAL's transfered to the new Terminal License Server when it was activated. However, we noticed that once all the company employees connected, none of the CAL's were showing licenses issued under the "Issued" column. We ran a test by connecting to the terminal server with a computer that had never connected, and indeed the terminal server issued a license to the new computer and it showed as "1" under the "Issued" column of one of the (per device) CAL's. So our theory was/is that the CAL's won't show…

Setting Group Policy to apply only to the terminal server
by Guest Graffiti Knight- 4 replies
We have a number of group policy restrictions for our terminal server, however they all fall under User Configuration (folder redirection, Control Panel access, and hiding drives in My Computer). To apply these settings we have a OU for our employees' computers to use loopback processing and an OU for the employees' user accounts. The problem is that whenever a user logs onto a computer that is not the terminal server (TS), if they aren't moved out of the OU then they policy restrictions get applied to their profile and we have to wipe it and start over. For computer rebuilds this becomes a hassle as we have to remove them, create the profile on their new machi…

DOS Printing from Windows Server 2003 TS?
by Guest John Kotuby- 7 replies

Hi all, I need some help please. We have a customer who is still using and old DOS version of software that we suppy to them and still support (even though I am encouraging them to move to the Windows version). They have a number of users that work from home. Up until a little while ago they were using Win2000 terminal Services and had no trouble printing remotely from DOS. Our DOS program, much like MS DOS Edit, can print to ports LPT1 - LPTn. They were using LPT2 without problem on Win2000. Now their tech support consultant has called and asked me for help. I could not find anything except a Kixstart script. I am not familair with Kixstart but …

Accessing a TS in a different domain

Morning all, I have a issue, we have a laptop (wiundows XP) which is a member of one domain (2k AD) that nees to access an application on a terminal server in a different domain (wi2k3). No trusts are setup as there is no connectivity between the sites where the different domains are, so the laptop users uses cached credentials to logon to the laptop machine. Is it possible to have this laptop user access the terminal server on the different domain, under these cirumstances? Thanks.

How to disable Windows key in GPO
by Guest compsosinc@gmail.com- 1 reply

We have Wyse thin clients connected to a Windows 2003 Terminal Server that is also a DC. We have added our Thin-client users to a new OU, created a GPO for that OU, and have begun to edit it. Currently, when our users hit the Windows key on the keyboard, they get the Start Menu of the TS. Using User Configuration>Administrative templates> we were able to eliminate all icons on the Start Menu except the following: My Computer Printers & Faxes Windows Security We cannot seem to eliminate the above from appearing, so have begun looking to disable the Windows Key altogether. Or if someone can direct us on how to get rid of the above another way we wo…

Hello all, I am trying to start IMAP on our Windows 2003 exchange server. I click on "Exchange.msc" and then follow the path: (Domain)>Servers>Protocols>IMAP4 and then right click on "Default IMAP4 Virtual Server". After about 30 seconds of showing no sign a warning comes up saying: "The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion" I am trying to activate this for all our non-blackberry users. Thanks for taking the time to read this and hope you can help us out. John.

slow login to Windows 2003 R2 with Citrix Presentation Server 4.0
by Guest molly.king@duke.edu- 5 replies

I have a Windows 2003 R2 running Citrix Presentation Server 4. There are two applications, Word 2003 and EBMS (from Ungerboeck Systems.) Whenever I run Word, it always logs in quickly and runs fine. EBMS (a sql 2000 app using Windows authenication) always runs fine. However, after I reboot the TS/Citrix server, the first time a user logs in, the log in runs fine. The second and subsequent times a user logs in, the log in takes 1 to 1.5 miinutes. The userenv.log shows the following on the second and subsequent logins - USERENV(270.28c) 00:30:10:718 IProfileSecurityCallBack: client authenticated. USERENV(2ac.2d0) 00:30:13:359 ImpersonateUser: Failed to impe…

Licensing Expires
by Guest Jeff- 3 replies

Hello. I'm having some licensing issues with my terminal server. For some reason, any user that connects to the server grabs a license from the Temporary License Pool instead of the Per User Cals that are available. Then, after so long, the license expires. How can I get these users to use the CALS that are available instead of the temporary licenses?

Hi; I got the following message when I logon to my Windows 2003 Terminal Server, how can I fix it. "Your terminal services temporary client licence will expire in 5 days" I did purchase the Terminal Services CAL and activating in a couple years ago but when I looked at the Windows Server 2003 - terminal server per user CAL token, I found nothing there. I saw it before. I only found some computer name listed in "Temporary License for Windows 2003....." cert only. Why? -- Kane

remotely accessing terminal services using a satellite connection...
by Guest Brad Pears- 4 replies

We have a dealer who has a high speed internet connection via satellite. He complains about how slow his terminal server connection is as he can type well ahead of the cursor etc... No one else on regular high speed connections has reported this same issue, however, we had a dealer a few years back in Colorado who also had a high speed satellite connection and complained about the exact same thing... Could it be that terminal server sessions made over satellite internet connections suffer because of the latency involved? Could it be for this reason that real-time terminal server type applications suffer but things like simple internet surfing and file …
