Going from Workgroup to Domain
by Guest Dan-o- 1 reply

Currently have a Windows 2K3 Terminal Server as a member of a Workgroup with about 20 device licenses (it was it's own license server). This has been working well for over a year. We will be implementing a Windows Small Bus 2K3 server shortly. As I want to do this properly (*grin*) I want to put the terminal server on the new domain. What will happen after the TS joins the domain? What will need to be done to ensure that the 20 licenses will be available and the application that the TS shares will work properly? TIA!

Rebuild Terminal Server License Server with a twist
by Guest mbamba- 1 reply

Working on an interesting problem for a client. Their Terminal Server Licensing Server needs to be moved off of a desktop machine and onto an existing server. They do not have any retail license codes or volume license agreement numbers available. I have been reading around the groups here and it seems like most of these issues simply involve a call to the clearing house. Same here? Thanks in advance....

Patching Terminal Services Servers
by Guest lozza- 6 replies
Guys, I have some rather basic question here I think.... any help is very much appreciated: 1) When patching TS Servers (Microsoft Patches, Hotfixes, Application specific patches etc etc) should the TS server be manually put into INSTALL MODE? 2) If INSTALL MODE should be initiated before patching, then how is this done at the enterprise level when using patch management tools such as WSUS? Are admins expected to log on to the TS servers and put them into INSTALL MODE before allowing WSUS to go ahead and patch the machines? 3) When doing any kind of patching, or installation of any new software (reboot required or not) should all user sessions b…

Local printer not redirected for all clients
by Guest Jonathan Wood- 3 replies

Hi all, In our company we're using 2 Terminal servers each running Windows Server 2003 R2 + SP1 in a domain environment. Each server is used by approx. 60 users and 100 network-enabled printers (most of them are HP LaserJets) are installed on the servers. The oldest server was installed in 2004 and has been running fine without any serious problems. However, at the beginning of this week its print spooler kept on crashing. I suspected that corrupted drivers could be the issue and deleted all printers from the server using the 'cleanspl.exe' utility from the Support Tools. I manually added all 100 printers to the system using the mainly the latest …

by Guest ish- 2 replies

I've been looking around the web, and different place, but I can't really seem to find out the difference between Remote Apps and Softgrid? Are they basically the same products? (like Cola and Pepsi) just in a different package? And what would be the strength and weaknesses of the 2 products.

Keyboard input problem with terminal server
by Guest Daniel- 1 reply

Recently we have been having users come to us saying that they are unable to type anything in any of our terminal servers. The first scenario is that the user cannot type anything and when I view their screen using Terminal Services Manager they are able to type again. The second scenario is that the user cannot type anything and then they have to minimize the terminal client and click the desktop. Once they click the desktop or type anything on their local computer everything is fine. We are using the latest RDP client in XP from Microsoft. Our servers that we have had the issue on are: Server 2003 R2 Enterprise x64 SP2 and Server 2003 Enterprise SP2.

Universal Print Driver
by Guest SJMP- 3 replies

I am having an issue that is server side related. Windows 2003 SP3 Terminal Server. When users connect the universal driver being used is hp deskjet 85cxi. I make the change to deskjet 990c and it works. But after I log back in the driver has been reset to 85cxi. I wait over 60sec's after the change is made. In fact I have left the connection on for more than 10 minutes after the change. I have also made other property changes to try and make it stick. This is happening on multiple clients so it is a server issue. I also tried renaming the universal driver dll hoping windows would be forced to recreate it. 1 - how do I remove the 85cxi driver? I went i…

Simultanious Access

Hi, What tools do you recommend for working with remote user consoles? Remote Desktop doesn't allow the user and I (the administrator) to simultaneously work with the console or TS session. Windows built-in Remote Assistant is a bit of a hassle with its email authorization. Any suggestions? It would be nice to have this tool available as an MSI so that Windows 2003 server can distribute it to all the workstations. -- Thanks, Bob

Move User Profile from %SystemDrive% to D: partition
by Guest KruJap777- 1 reply

Hello, We have a Terminal server whose System partition (C:) is quickly filling up with terminal user profiles. I'd like to move all of these profiles on to the D: partition which has plenty of free space. I was wondering what the best and most transparent method was to performing this, so that users can login and not even notice the difference. Thanks.

Capacity Planning Guide:
by Guest Kristin L. Griffin- 3 replies

Where can I get the scripts mentioned in the 2003 Terminal Services Capacity Planning Guide? It references: "The scripts developed at Microsoft for these tests are interpretations of the Gartner Group user definitions, and are provided “as is”. They will not work in your test environment without some modifications, such as changing the various server names that are hard coded in the scripts to match those in your test environment. The test tools are available at: at http://www.microsoft.com/reskit. " But I have been unable to find these scripts so I can modify and play with them. Thanks!

Hello, I'm testing a TS (2003 standard R2) in combination with a HP thin client (5300) which has XP embedded on it. When I'm trying to make 1 location for the user ts profiles I have a problem that it creates the profile on the local TS and on the DC. On both the servers (TS and DC) I changed the location of the TS Profiles via Group Policy under Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Terminal Services on BOTH the TS and the DC servers (The profile path is f.e. \\dc\ts_profiles$\). I logged off the thin client RDP session. Deleted the local profile on the TS and also on the DC. Logged on again at the TS server. It builds the start m…

How does TS address the issue of utilizing non-multithredded files

How does Treminal Server address or deal with the issue of a shared application that may contain one or more non-multitredded files. Does this simply mean these application with not work properly and when designing an application that could be run as a Terminal Server application the developer must be carful to use only multithredded capable files?

Creating folders on TS for Thin-clients

We have windows 2003 running as DC & TS. We have remote users using thin-clients (no harddrive) that we need to give the ability to save PDFs from the Internet (the thin-clients are using their own browser, not the TS) to a user-designated folder on a particular drive on the DC. How do we set that up? Thanks

Terminal Server Hardware Recommendations
by Guest AndreZ- 7 replies

Hey Gang, It's about that time to upgrade our server, and honestly I haven't been keeping up with current hardware out there. So I'm looking for recommendations We currently have Windows 2k (32bit) Server 2ghz Dual Processors (single core) 4gb Memory SCSI Raid 1 (operating system) SCSI Raid 5 (Data files) This system was originally designed to house about 10-15 concurrent users and thier applications. The last 4.5 years have been pretty good to use, especially considering it's holding a load of about 35 concurrent users and all thier applications. With that unexpected growth in mind.. I'm thinking Win2k3 server (64-bit) 8GB Memory Dual Quad Cor…

image column in TSAdmin
by Guest Remko- 8 replies

When I look on the processes tab in TSAdmin it seems to me that the image name of processes is cut off when longer than 15 or 18 characters. Some examples: 1) run tsadmin on windows xp, look at local processes veryveryverylongfilename.exe is displayed as veryveryverylongfi frameworkservice.exe is displayed as frameworkservice.e So the names are cut off at 18 chars. 2) run tsadmin on windows xp, look at remote windows 2003 server: amagentassist.exe is displayed as amagentassist.e lockdownmgrsrv.exe is displayed as lockdownmgrsrv. So the names are cut off at 15 chars. If I run TSAdmin on the windows 2003 server the processnames are displayed correct…

Legacy Mode
by Guest gspotts- 2 replies

I have a Dos MRP program that has been reworked to run as a Windows application. As the program has a maximum number of concurrent users we delete the user log file each night to clear redundant users. The first person who logs on in the morning is supposed to recreate the file. This works fine over the network but does not work as when logged in on a TS session. I have been told that we need to set up the TS account in Legacy mode. Does anyone have any info on this. What is legacy mode? How does it differ from a normal TS session? what impact will it have on running conventional applications on TS. Many Thanks Graham Potts
