logon problem
by Guest modalit@hotmail.com- 1 reply

Hi, I have found this forum in desperation, would be grateful for any advice. We have a network with 4x terminal servers serving up to around 20 users each. We have a problem when users log on to terminal sessions, where after a user provides user/password and appears to authenticate, the blue background (that I take to be the first stage of drawing the desktop) appears but the session does not progress further, no taskbar, no desktop icons, just the pointer. Nothing works, and the only way we have found to rectify the problem is for an admin to reset the session through terminal services manager. This problem appears to happen randomly - it can affect an…

Windows 2003 standard and XP Pro clients. By default in the RDP login screen, under Options/ Local Resources, the Printers checkbox is check, is there a way to change this to uncheck and let the end users themselves to determine whether or not to "bring" local printers over to TS? Thanks in advance.

bypass local addresses and auto detect TS gateway
by Guest Tom Decaluwé- 2 replies

Hi, On the MSTSC client TS gateway tab you now have the option "bypass TS gateway server for local addresses" My question is, what does the client concider to be local? when does it decide yes i need to use the TS gateway or no i don't i can directly connect? 1) does it look at the local NIC subnet 2) does it look at AD sites and services 3) does it do some sort of connection test 4).... what determins the local yes or no answer? As a second question i see you can select auto detection for TS gateway, but how does this work? 1) does it broadcast for a TS gateway 2) does it query AD for TS gateway servers 3) does it look at specific DNS recor…

Hi, I published RemoteAPP for two different applications in my TS Server 2008. In the client computers, I need to save two different Windows usernames for these two RemoteAPP sessions. But, the problem is, the RDP RemoteAPP is able to save only one username for both the sessions. Can anybody suggest how to do this as per my above requirement. USB 2.0 Redirect Options with Native 2003 Terminal Services
by Guest Tim S- 3 replies

All, I have a two part question: 1. With terminal services in Windows 2003 and WYSE terminals running embedded XP, is it possible to have reliable USB 2.0 redirection? We have tried this shareware without a lot of luck and their support is less than adequate. http://www.usb-redirector.com/downloads.html What we are trying to do is install digital camera software on the terminal sever and load pictures from the USB 2.0 cable locally at the WYSE terminal. The camera needs to be a drive letter for the workflow to be acceptable. Are there known third party solutions that will do this without breaking the bank? 2. Is this even an issue with Windo…

Local USB peripherals within TS session?

Hi, Is there any way to have a locally attached (USB) device, for example a scale, appear within a terminal server session? Or are we still restricted to local printers and drives only? We are connecting XP clients to a 2003 terminal server. Thanks

RE: 2003 Terminal services connections Hi guys Need a bit of advice if you wouldnt mind. I have setup a TS with two applications that the users need. I have locked it down with a TS GP and everything is working correctly. I have also written a GP to put an RDC connection on clients that need it to allow them to connect to the session. The issue I have is all the clients currently connect to X Domain and the terminal server is on Y. I dont want to have to create them accounts on the Y Domain to allow them to login so I wanted to utilise a single account. However I am finding if a user is logged in on one machine and I try and login as the same user …

Hi all, I have a multi-site client using Windows Enterprise (32bit) server 2003 in NLB with 2 TS servers. They have various printers on hte remote sites. We have a 10Mb Leased line in the main office with VPN connection to the remote offices. Remote offices have 4Mb Leased lines. Internet traffic is sent via a separate ADSL line and all office work is over the VPN's The VPN is set to allow ALL traffic, so no restrictions on ports etc, all traffic is allow both ways but only through the tunnels (i.e. no direct connection to the internet via the leased lines/routers.) The problem I have is that whn the printers have Bi-Directional printing enabled and SN…

NTVDM encountered a hard error
by Guest EJS77- 2 replies

I have a strange error on a Terminal session. I receive the above error when a user opens an older application. When I open the same application as myself, Domain Admin, it works. I have removed the profile and the problem persists. When I add them the local Administrators group I still get the error. When I add them to the Domain Admins group the application runs. obviously I do not want the user to be a domain admin so is there anything that I can do to resolve this problem. Thanks, Eric

IE slow for one TS user

Hi, One of our TS (2K) users are experiencing slowness with IE on her TS session. It looks like her IE process is taking more memory than other TS users in the same server. I am trying to determine the problem and would like to know if it would affect any other TS user (IE) if I modify the IE settings for the problematic user? Thanks

printing using the fallback printer...
by Guest Brad Pears- 3 replies

We have a win2K3 windows terminal server where we allow our dealers to connect to run various applications. Most of them have had no difficulties printing since I made mods to the server to configure a "Fallback Printer" driver when the proper driver is not available on the term server. (driver for the printer they actually have installed locally) However, today one of them called me complaining they were unable to print. They have an all-in-one printer with a USB connection. The printer is an HP Deskjet F2100 series printer. WHen this user logs on, I am wathcing teh event viewer and I am seeing that it does set up the PCL Fallback Printer driver - and this is …

Not granted logon right
by Guest altered- 2 replies

Hi, I have an odd issue on our DC's. We have approx 30 DC's and I have non domain admins who are grated access to remote desktop into DC's via the remote desktop group in Active Directory (Builtin container). The members of the group are able to access 2/3 of the DC's but on the other 1/3 they receive the prompt stating they must be granted the logon through Terminal Services right. The remote desktop group exists by default on the TS connection. In addition the remote desktop group is specified in the Default Domain Controller policy for the logon through Terminal Services right. Replication is not an issue, group memberships have been fully replic…

I have searched everywhere but can't find an exact answer for this. Can a server running Windows Server 2003 Standard x64 be set up as a license server. I have looked through the Technet articles and it alwyas says "Applies to:" and then lists Server 2003 32 bit all versions and Enterprise 64. I have not seen Standard 64 listed on any of these. Thanks.

Installing SQL 2005 on a Windows 2003 Terminal Server
by Guest Paul Duncan- 4 replies

I have found several Microsoft KB articles saying that SQL Server is not supported on Windows Server 2003 Terminal Server application server (KB 327270). This article appears to be specific to SQL Server Failover Clustering on Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based server clusters where the Windows Server 2003-based server clusters have Terminal Server installed on the cluster. Is there an official stance about installing SQL 2005 on a Terminal Server? My experience has been that SQL significantly degrades performance when it is installed on a TS. Thanks!

Windows 2008 Published Application issue caused by UAC?
by Guest slj333- 1 reply

We recently upgraded to our GL application (Microsoft Navision), and the application is being run from a Windows 2008 terminal server environment. When my users try to update an existing excel worksheet from the published application, the process runs, and then just stalls without completing (no error message). However, if I allow them to log in to the Remote Desktop of the Windows 2008 Terminal server, and run Nav within that environment, the process completes. My first inclincation is to disable UAC, but I like the idea of keeping that feature if possible. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. thanks, Steve

Installing MS Access

I have office 2000 that includes Access installed on a terminal server. I wanted to upgrade to 2003 or at least install just Access 2003 on it but I heard that there is a problem of comparability or that there is a specific 2003 application for terminal server. Any thoughts on that? Thanks

Need additional access to server 2003 desktop
by Guest dave64- 1 reply

Hi, I hope this isn't too redundant. I have a situation where a customer has a client/server app running on desktop and Server 2003. Performance is OK on desktops, poor on most notebooks and really sucks over vpn links and even a dedicated T1. THe temporary fix has been to let 2 remote users RDP in to the server. This works great. The problem is that we have used the 'Remote Administration' (default) mode. Thus we are limited to two sessions. Is there a way of getting more sessions WITHOUT doing anything drastic. There is no issue with purchasing licenses if that's all it takes. Changing TS to Application more may not be an option because a software…

Application Installation and Update
by Guest Dennis B- 1 reply

I have built my first T.S. and did the initial install of the applications. I did not see in any of the documentation I could find what happens to service packs. I set the server to install mode and then did the installation of the applications and then set the server back to execute mode. I want to install service packs now, some of which will do reboots, so do I go back into install mode for just the service pack or should I have done all the service packs while I was originally in install mode? What if they reboot to finish up the service pack install, will the server stay in Install mode during a reboot? How do I deal with future service packs: uni…

Lockdown Terminal Services Server 2008 in 2003 domain.
by Guest Kent- 2 replies

We already have our users/workstations locked down well. No CMD prompt, no registry editing, no windows explorer, local drives hidden etc... It works really well. We can't get this to translate into our 2008 ts sessions. Everything is open. Any ideas? I thought loopback was the answer but can't seem to get that working. Is there a 2008 template that needs to be loaded into the 2003 DC? Thanks in advance. Kent
