Not granted logon right
by Guest altered- 2 replies

Hi, I have an odd issue on our DC's. We have approx 30 DC's and I have non domain admins who are grated access to remote desktop into DC's via the remote desktop group in Active Directory (Builtin container). The members of the group are able to access 2/3 of the DC's but on the other 1/3 they receive the prompt stating they must be granted the logon through Terminal Services right. The remote desktop group exists by default on the TS connection. In addition the remote desktop group is specified in the Default Domain Controller policy for the logon through Terminal Services right. Replication is not an issue, group memberships have been fully replic…

IE slow for one TS user
by Guest OM- 1 reply

Hi, One of our TS (2K) users are experiencing slowness with IE on her TS session. It looks like her IE process is taking more memory than other TS users in the same server. I am trying to determine the problem and would like to know if it would affect any other TS user (IE) if I modify the IE settings for the problematic user? Thanks

Server 2003 License Server
by Guest maltman- 2 replies

I have searched everywhere but can't find an exact answer for this. Can a server running Windows Server 2003 Standard x64 be set up as a license server. I have looked through the Technet articles and it alwyas says "Applies to:" and then lists Server 2003 32 bit all versions and Enterprise 64. I have not seen Standard 64 listed on any of these. Thanks.

Need additional access to server 2003 desktop
by Guest dave64- 1 reply

Hi, I hope this isn't too redundant. I have a situation where a customer has a client/server app running on desktop and Server 2003. Performance is OK on desktops, poor on most notebooks and really sucks over vpn links and even a dedicated T1. THe temporary fix has been to let 2 remote users RDP in to the server. This works great. The problem is that we have used the 'Remote Administration' (default) mode. Thus we are limited to two sessions. Is there a way of getting more sessions WITHOUT doing anything drastic. There is no issue with purchasing licenses if that's all it takes. Changing TS to Application more may not be an option because a software…

Windows 2008 Published Application issue caused by UAC?
by Guest slj333- 1 reply

We recently upgraded to our GL application (Microsoft Navision), and the application is being run from a Windows 2008 terminal server environment. When my users try to update an existing excel worksheet from the published application, the process runs, and then just stalls without completing (no error message). However, if I allow them to log in to the Remote Desktop of the Windows 2008 Terminal server, and run Nav within that environment, the process completes. My first inclincation is to disable UAC, but I like the idea of keeping that feature if possible. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. thanks, Steve

Installing MS Access

I have office 2000 that includes Access installed on a terminal server. I wanted to upgrade to 2003 or at least install just Access 2003 on it but I heard that there is a problem of comparability or that there is a specific 2003 application for terminal server. Any thoughts on that? Thanks

Application Installation and Update

I have built my first T.S. and did the initial install of the applications. I did not see in any of the documentation I could find what happens to service packs. I set the server to install mode and then did the installation of the applications and then set the server back to execute mode. I want to install service packs now, some of which will do reboots, so do I go back into install mode for just the service pack or should I have done all the service packs while I was originally in install mode? What if they reboot to finish up the service pack install, will the server stay in Install mode during a reboot? How do I deal with future service packs: uni…

Lockdown Terminal Services Server 2008 in 2003 domain.
by Guest Kent- 2 replies

We already have our users/workstations locked down well. No CMD prompt, no registry editing, no windows explorer, local drives hidden etc... It works really well. We can't get this to translate into our 2008 ts sessions. Everything is open. Any ideas? I thought loopback was the answer but can't seem to get that working. Is there a 2008 template that needs to be loaded into the 2003 DC? Thanks in advance. Kent

NTVDM encountered a hard error
by Guest EJS77- 2 replies

I have a strange error on a Terminal session. I receive the above error when a user opens an older application. When I open the same application as myself, Domain Admin, it works. I have removed the profile and the problem persists. When I add them the local Administrators group I still get the error. When I add them to the Domain Admins group the application runs. obviously I do not want the user to be a domain admin so is there anything that I can do to resolve this problem. Thanks, Eric

Windows 2008 TS locking problem
by Guest Erik Kristoffersen- 2 replies

At the local school I have got the following problem with a brand new installation af Windows 2008 TS: Suddenly every session is halted when accessing the file server. When the problem arises, client sessions may be able to continue working, however when they access the file server, they will be halted. Problem can be cured by restarting the file server (which by the way is fully functional). Setup: HP ML350 G5p, 4 GB RAM, 2 x 146 GB HD is running Windows 2008 x64 (terminal server) HP DL320 G5, 4 GB RAM, 4 x 250 GB HD is running Windows 2008 x64 (domain controller, file server, TS license server etc.) Home folders stored on the file server, redir…

printing using the fallback printer...
by Guest Brad Pears- 3 replies

We have a win2K3 windows terminal server where we allow our dealers to connect to run various applications. Most of them have had no difficulties printing since I made mods to the server to configure a "Fallback Printer" driver when the proper driver is not available on the term server. (driver for the printer they actually have installed locally) However, today one of them called me complaining they were unable to print. They have an all-in-one printer with a USB connection. The printer is an HP Deskjet F2100 series printer. WHen this user logs on, I am wathcing teh event viewer and I am seeing that it does set up the PCL Fallback Printer driver - and this is …

It embarrasses it very much because it doesn't understand. Please help someone. It is an application error of the event viewer of "Windows server 2003". The environment is used as DB server of Oracle. The error of "Userenv" fires it in rapid succession. A big problem wants to make it not generated though it might not be. However, it was suddenly generated though the environment had not been changed. Is it a foundation solution that use UPHClean for TECHNET of Microsoft though is? I want to examine grounds of the cause of the error. I want to know because of which application to have liberated the registry. The error doesn't occur why while it logs i…

TS Web Access and Local Drives
by Guest Dennis B- 1 reply

I just set up TS Gateway and TS Web Access in Win2008. When I use RDC to access a PC and enable showing local disk drives, I can see both local and remote drives. When I log in to TS Web Access and click the Remote Desktop in the Bar (not the icon in the remote apps box), the disk and plug and play device icons under the options settings (where you specify the computer you want to connect to) are grayed out. When I connect to the same PC using the same login using Web Access as I do with RDC my client local drives are not mapped. All the group policies I can find that relate to it are set to Not Configured for showing local drives. How can I get the disk d…

Installing SQL 2005 on a Windows 2003 Terminal Server
by Guest Paul Duncan- 4 replies

I have found several Microsoft KB articles saying that SQL Server is not supported on Windows Server 2003 Terminal Server application server (KB 327270). This article appears to be specific to SQL Server Failover Clustering on Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based server clusters where the Windows Server 2003-based server clusters have Terminal Server installed on the cluster. Is there an official stance about installing SQL 2005 on a Terminal Server? My experience has been that SQL significantly degrades performance when it is installed on a TS. Thanks!

Hi: Everything was working perfectly, but not now. I am recieving an error message for all current users (the client window interface) of: To log on to this remote computer, you must have Terminal Server User Access on this computer. By default, members of the Remote Desktop Users group have these permissions. etc. My people were loging in fine, then the project got put on the back burner for 3 weeks with no one loging in or touching the machine and now no one can logon. I checked the settings and they look good. When I try and login, in the Terminal Services Manager window it shows a RDP-Tcp #xx but I can not loging with the above message o…

How can I script (in VBScript, C#.NET, or PowerShell) the following. I'm looking for the total sessions created (since the last reboot). Thus far, I have only been able to get this number by running QWINSTA /COUNTER and checking the "Total Sessions Created" value. NOTE: this number is not equal to the total number of active and inactive sessions

Termnal Services and convergence

A colleage of minee added a monitoring program that when one of my terminal servers out of a farm of 8 using Windows NLB reaches 40 connections the monitor will drainstop the server until the active sesion level falls below 40 again. this causes the entire farm to converge each time a server is drained. My concern with this is (With supporting evidence, please) Does this affect the performance of the servers or the stabilty of them.

Question regarding CRM (v3 - I believe) on Terminal Server (WIN2003)
by Guest Cary W. Shultz- 2 replies

Good morning! I have posted this question to both the CRM and to the Terminal Server newgroups. Have a client who runs Windows 2003 Enterprise Terminal Server and has the CRM Client installed. Something like 45 users use this config. Someone (not me!!!!!!!) made the Domain Users group a member of the local Administrators group on the TS box. So, yes, anyone can technically shut down this TS box! Not good. I found this out yesterday while dealing with a printer issue. Anyway, I can not make any changes to this as - it is suspected - the reason for doing this (Domain Users - local Administrators group) was to be able to manage the CRM client (r…

Good morning! Okay - Vera N, Patrick R, Jeff P, Lan W - do not jump on me for this....this is not something that I set up...I am simply trying to clean up a mess! We have a client in a WIN2003 AD environment with one TS (running on WIN2003 SP2 Enterprise w/12GB RAM) and - for whatever reason - the security group "Domain Users" was added to the local Administrators group on the TS box. At the moment I can not remove this (I know! I know! I know!). Anyway - question is about printing. All of the users naturally see all of the printers. Question Number 1 - is there a limit as to how many printers can actually show up? I ask because for al…

Hi, I've some quick questions. I've read alot about this, and couldnt find an exact answer. We running 2008 terminalservices in 2003 domain. I created a central store for my admx templates. I've copied english template from ts and swedish from a vista computer. Nothing crazy with that, right? Created one OU with my TS, and one gpo on that. Apply permissions is for me(for testing) and for the TS server. I use loopback policy. 2 questions. 1. When we us loopback with replace. How does it work? Doesn't it use the users usersettings then, or is it only replace the userpolicy that is in conflict? Reason is that I dont want any user polcy to be app…

Bold text disappearing in RDS to Win 2k3 server
by Guest Alicia Wallace- 6 replies

Hi, We have a site with a Windows 2003 R2 (SP2) terminal server, and a Windows 2003 SBS (SP2) server running Exchange. There are 15 users on the terminal server, some of them working off PCs, some off laptops. There are three laptop users who have been having regular problems with their session. At a random point (for no apparent reaon - there are no regular errors appearing in the event logs on either server or the laptops) all the bold text in the session disappears. This includes the titles off the open windows, all the bold text within Outlook (titles of new e-mails, any folder titles which have unread e-mails, etc), the start button (the start bu…
