Is Remote Desktop vulnerable to brute force attacks?

Something I thought about some time now: Is RDP completely secure against brute force attacks? I mean, does it stops someone, who throws 10000 password combinations per minute? Can it sense such attacks?

Limit _Minimum_ Color Depth
by Guest Morten Frederiksen- 8 replies

Is it possible to limit the minimum color depth allowed for terminal service sessions on a Windows 2003 server? (An application running on the server will crash if users connect with anything less than 24 bit color depth.) I know that it is possible to limit the maximum color depth by using group policies, but this is unfortunately the opposite of what is required. Regards, Morten

Help - need more than 2 concurrent RDP connections
by Guest segis bata- 1 reply

Hello all, Sorry if this issue has been resolved before but I went through the messages in the newsgroup and sadly I didn't find anything that could help me. So, here's my situation. I have a stand-alone server, running Win2003 Server, located outside our office. We connect to that server from our office using Remote Desktop. Currently, we're four people that need to connect using Remote Desktop to that server but we manage (80%) to be connected only two of us at the same time, because if a third user tries to connect using Remote Desktop, he'll receive a message saying that the concurrent user limit (2) was reached. My question is, how can I set tha…

Understanding Installation/Use of Programs on TS
by Guest compsosinc@gmail.com- 4 replies

We are experimenting with a potential setup - using VirtualPC - for implementing Terminal Services on a network and have a question about installing/using applications on the TS. In this experiment, TS is installed on the DC. On the real network we are attempting to mimic, there is an application installed on the DC that is used for Accounting purposes. The fat-clients have the program installed locally and map to the DC for the data. Now this network needs to add remote thin-clients (cannot install program locally) to access the program. So, after TS is installed on this DC: 1. Can both the current clients and the thin-clients use the program without it …

If i use the mstsc.exe /console (from the "run" box) i get the error in the subject above. If i just use the XP remote desktop connection I get the error The client can't connect to the remote computer. I have determined through netstat -a that the adapter is not listening on port 3389. How do i get it to listen? I have checked the box for allowing remote access. the user account is local to the server (it can log on locally), it is a member of the remote desktop users group, it is an administrator on the network and …

icon images on terminal server
by Guest MM- 6 replies

Following a recent reboot all of the PDF and MSOffice document and program icons became plain white rectangles, as if there is no program association. Double clicking on the icon still opens the file so the association is still there - just no icon image. I deleted the icon cache (C:\WINNT\ShellIconCache) AND ran rebuild icons in TWEAK UI AND rebooted - no change. Folder icons and Internet Explorer, Outlook, Recycle Bin, Zip Files, Wordpad, Calculator display properly it is MSOffice and PDF that seem to be the issue. Suggestions?

Application Licensing query

Hi all, After having spoken to some helpful people in the Networking forum, to solve our Branch user problems we are looking at deploying terminal services. Looking at the licensing side, I need to basically need to find a cost efficient way to do the following... Set up terminals with a single IP address (Of the TS farm), setup some kind of mapping so that one set of users logon to Terminal Servers with only Microsoft Outlook installed, and the other set of users get automatically directed to servers with Office Standard installed... I had looked at denying one set of users access to the full office suite via ntfs permissions or group policy softw…

Script Input.

Hiya, Not sure ths is the correct forum, but I'm going to give it a shot. Our company just installed 15 new copiers, most networked, all new drivers and names on the network. I was made responsible to make a script to add in to our login.bats (we run many different login scriots depending on where you at in the company and what you need to do) I have to ad this script to our login scripts to remove the "old" instances of the copiers these replaced. This has to be done across Citrix as well and PC workstations. The majority of our workstations run XP, but we do have a few 2000 machines. But that doesn't matter they all run the same scipts. I was going …

Can't print to client printer from W2003 R2 x64 TS
by Guest Mark L Cooper- 6 replies

We just moved our main application from a W2000 server to a new W2003 R2 Std x64 server. We can run our main application on the new TS as usual from both XP and Vista clients. We've tested an XP client with an HP LaserJet 6P attached and a Vista Business client with an HP LaserJet 6P. We've tested with both normal 'user' accounts and administrator accounts. The client printer does show up as the default printer in the Windows Printer Select dialog box running on the TS. Testing with Notepad and a 1 word document on the TS and trying to print to the client printer gives the error "The handle is invalid." Printing to the client printer from the ma…

We are running 2003 server SP 2 with terminal services on a 4 processor server. We recently installed SP2 on a base 2003 standard server via windows update. Since the installation, we receive "warning" event 244 ("Failed to create a desktop due to desktop heap exhaustion") and all subsequent logons of remote desktops fail, with no further error messages. One or possibly two logons work, then the the warning message is issued, and further logons fail until the system is rebooted. Terminal server has 5 CALs, so this is not a licensing issue. I've attempted to install the dheapmon tool but it can't find the correct symbol table, even though I've downl…

hbg-tst doesn't show up on hbg-sql session manager, because hbg-sql is running windows 2000, and hbg-tst is windows 2003. For some reason, win2k can't see sessions on win2k3. I'm looking into a way to resolve that. I'm also looking into a way to automatically log users off if they've been idle for an extended amount of time. -- eodell

Terminal services and delay in sound redirection
by Guest Yuri GMT+1- 1 reply

Hi there, I have a DSS player running on terminal server (W2K3). This program play’s recorded sound files. Sound redirection works good only there is a delay. You notice this delay the moment you press the stop button in the DSS player. The sound file continues for two seconds. I’ve been testing with DSS, WAV and MP3’s. All these extensions have the same symptoms. Possible causes (in my analysis, let me know if there are more): 1. the DSS player 2. rdp audio driver 3. audio redirection from TS to Client Actions taken: - used different file extensions - used different programs: windows media player has the same delay (this exclude cause 1) - when …

Terminal Server Licenses on the Terminal Server itself
by Guest Pearl- 1 reply

have been told that having the Licenses installed on the actual Terminal Server is a bad idea. We have 3 Terminal Servers that have the licenses installed on them directly. If this is a bad thing....how can I move the licenses from those servers to another server and what kind of server would be better suited for the licenses to be installed ?Should it be a DC or member server ? Can I install all the different licenses on a single server (we have device CALs and User CALs)? Can it be a Virtual Machine?

Running TS on DC - RDP question
by Guest compsosinc@gmail.com- 5 replies

I know, this is not accepted practice but I am trying something for experimental purposes because it may be implemented on a real network in the future. I have a Windows 2003 Server St. Ed (no SP1) running as a DC and I installed Terminal Server on it --currently without a Licensing Server installed. I have an XP Pro client PC added to the domain and User added called "TestUser1" in the AD. This user is currently a member of the Domain Users & Remote Desktop Users groups. Are these the only groups this user needs to be a member of to successfully connect to the DC/TS using RDC? Based on some research, there seems to be a question about making the user a …

Is it possible to "copy" client profiles on the TS server I need to setup 10 TS client profiles and although each one will be working in the same application, they need to have their own username & password to login, for the app to function correctly. and instead of installing mail settings, printers etc. for each TS user is there an easier way? Thanks Pierre (sunny South Africa)

RC2 This server is used only for TS I have followed all Microsoft guides to installing this server as a TS It registered the license and is activated for 10 user cals The server is not a DC on the domain The server is the TS server AND the License server I added a new key in the registry that points to the servers IP for the licensing I have added users to remote users in AD I have added users to RPC connections I do have another TS also win 2003 Sp2 and this works fine Problem When a client tries to login it says - The user domainname\administrator is currently logged on to this computer. FYI: Issues with terminal server not working after restart & UNIXprinting/canon color printer (a really old one)

FYI: Issues with terminal server not working after restart & UNIXprinting/canon color printer (a really old one) Hi there, begin this year I posted about terminal services often not working after rebooting the server. We finally found the issue. Not sure where the exact cause comes from, but I figured I'd let you guys here know anyways. The server had printer drivers installed for an old Canon color printer. This thing required UNIX printing services to be installed on the server. The printer was removed a long time ago (the drivers were still installed on the server however, and so was UNIX printing). Not sure if the canon driver or the UNIX print…
