User Profile Issues, Possible Corruption?
by Guest mmasuo@gmail.com- 1 reply

Hi there. I'm desktop support, and researching an issue we've got running right now. Most users I support are thin client/ terminal service users. Currently 8 of them have problems with the start button. We use 2X to pull the kernel down from server, saves it in memory, and (I think) sends the user credentials to TS server. TS servers are W2K3. There's 4 or 5 of them, loadbalancing. User gets logged in, fine. Clicks on start button, start button looks pressed but no response. Or, similar - the user can expand the start menu but cannot open Programs. On desktops, I've had this happen and it was profile, just rename and log in- they're good to go. …

Configuring Outlook on TS
by Guest td- 2 replies

I have recently installed Office 2003 on our 2003 TS. I want to use the GPO's from the Office Resource kit to configure a default Outlook Template and also make changes to what the users can configure within Outlook. Where I am having difficulty is that I only want it to apply when users log onto our TS. From what I have seen I can only apply the Outlook GPOs to users/ groups not to computers. Can someone assist me? TIA

I am trying to use Remote Desktop as a VPN replacement. I would really like to beable to support webcams for instant messaging and multi function printers. Has anyone used screwdriver or products from http://www.remote-scan.com? I am contantly adding printer drivers and only getting a 50/50 sucess rate at that. What are most people using?

LifeCam VX-3000 on Windows 2003 Server
by Guest Ken Cobler- 6 replies

I have a LifeCam VX-3000 webcam installed on a Windows 2003 server. I plugged the camera in the usb port on the server, the OS asked for the CD, downloaded drivers, but, would not load the applications that come on the CD. The applications on the CD will only load on Windows XP or Vista. I am not concerned about the applications that came with the LifeCam VX-3000, because I am trying to use the camera with another application that can capture images from a Video For Windows source. The image capture application works perfect capturing images from the LifeCam VX-3000, even on a remote desktop session, as long as I am logged in as an administrator. …

No Outlook Email via RDP
by Guest Eric- 4 replies

Ok, being new to SBS 2003 and TS integration, I am having an issue with users loggin into the Terminal Server and accessing Outlook 2003. I can RDP into the TS Server via my Wyse S90 WinTerm with XPe but when I launch Outlook, it ask for a username and password. Since I have logged into the TS server via RDP with the same usrename and password I found it very odd to ask for this. Naturally I tried putting in the username and password again only for it to prompt me for it again. For some reason, It will not let me login to my Outlook email. I did test a few standard worksation conversions to this new network from SBS2000 and I can access email just fine…

Printing Issues
by Guest mbowman@pacdoc.com- 3 replies

I have a program that is giving users issues when trying to print from a specific program on the MS 2003 Terminal Server box. The only way I have figured out to let the users be able to print from the program is to make them local admins on the Terminal Server box. Though doing this over writes their restricted group policy that does not allow them to shut down the box. If I give them local admin rights then they can shut down the box. Anyone have any ideas or suggestions on how to give them print rights but no admin rights? Michael

Our network has multiple locations and adding more, between 2-12. Each of those will have a single XP computer. The network is Server2003, SP2. I have never user TS before. All current sites have DC's and AD works fine. The users in the new TS setup would be accessing MS Office 2003 products, including Access DBs. I understand that I can choose per device for the CALS so that multiple staff can use the single computer at each site. What I don't yet understand is what licenses and/or products I need for the TS server ?? Does one purchase a TS license for a TS server ?? Is this device called a TS license server a seperate product ?? Am I asking th…

Small Bus Server vs. Server 2003 and TS
by Guest Markus- 2 replies

I am a bit confused choosing between Small Business Server and Server 2003. I am a devel;oper and need to install my app and test it under Terminal Services over a WAN or over the Internet. From what I have read, SBS and Server2003 both have TS., so I think I could use either for my purposes, which is focused on learning TS setup and testing my app in TS. Specifically, I have an interest in: 1) learning how to set up and run TS in either environment so I can assist my clients who may be running the app in either environment, and 2) testing the app and any future upgrades running under TS. Regarding 1) above, anyone know if the setup process for TS is …

RDP not Connecting from External Requests
by Guest David- 3 replies

Utterly confused. I have a Win2003SBS R2 and a Win2003Std R2 with a TS role connected on their LAN adaptors (SBS 192.168.16.2 and Std .5) each with an internet connection (SBS - 10.0.0.2 : Std on 172.16.0.100). I can make a connection from a LAN PC using 172.16.0.100 & 192.168.16.5 but I cannot connect from an external client. Wireshark reports incoming traffic on 3389 when initiating an external request and I can see traffic on 80 when I try to telnet. No outgoing traffic is generated from the TS server in response. I can browse to the web so port 80 outgoing is functioning. The TS logs show successful logon attempts from LAN clients but no en…

Logon question (...and I have RTM)
by Guest Adam Sandler- 3 replies

Hello, We have a domain of W2K3 R2 servers and XP SP2 clients. Auto updates are off (although we do update manually). Up until 4 days ago, there were no problems seen with logging on remotely with mstsc.exe. This morning when I tried to use mstsc to logon to one of the clients, I got a "The local policy of this system does not permit you to logon interactively" error popup. I checked the domain GPO and it has "Allow logon through terminal services" set to domain admins, domain users, and remote desktop users listed. For "log on locally" it has domain admins and domain users listed. Here's where I get really perplexed... On the previously mentione…

Sound channel initialization
by Guest konda- 4 replies

Hello all, Sometimes when I connect to windows XP through remote desktop Windows Media player doesn't play audio. It complains about 'no suitable audio devices found'. Majority of the times audio works great but some cases we get into this situation. What suprises us is that disconnect and reconnect to the same session which was playing audio just fine previously can get into this problem. It is as though Terminal services doesn't initialize sound channel during RDP connect. Does terminal services determine not to load audio drivers in a session based on some resource utilization? Does anyone have any info/pointers to guide us in troubleshooting this…

Terminal Services License Server Found and Not found at the same time
by Guest NikrusKram@gmail.com- 5 replies

I've recently implemented a Terminal Server and Terminal Services License Server in our environment. Both boxes are Windows Server 2003. I've activated the license server successfully, and installed per user CAL tokens on it. I set the Terminal Server to per user licensing, and it can successfully see the license server. When Logging into the Terminal Server, the Manage Your Server Window says "A Terminal Services License Server has been found on the network." However, a balloon pops up in the system tray that says "Cannot find windows 2003 terminal server license server." And tells me how many days I have remaining on my grace period. This seems rather contra…

Hello, I currently have a small network that uses a single server running Windows Server 2003. I have 18 computers using xp pro that are shared by approx 60 users. We use TS for all 18 computers to connect to the sever though seldom are more than 5 Devices ever connected to the server at one time. I need to know what Licenses I need to be properly licensed. I am assuming i need at least 18 TS devices cals. Also of the 60 users that share computers I have approx 5 users that need to be able to use TS from anywhere. Can i License my 18 Devices and these 5 users by purchesing at least 18 Devices cals and then 5 User Cals. If so can i set them up to …

change licensing mode
by Guest dlw- 1 reply

I have a win 2003 terminal server, it is set up in per device mode, I'm getting that error where it can't upgrade or renew the license, so I guess I have to change it to per user mode. The 2003 TS license server is activated and has 10 user licenses, but it is not giving them out (issued says not applicable). Question- Do I have to call MS and re-activate the license server in per user mode? How can you tell what mode the license server is running in?

Recommend a Printer that Works
by Guest Eric- 2 replies

Can anyone recommend a decent BW HP printer that works with TS x64? Client is looking to stay around $200 or so. I have spent countless time working on a printer that is supposed to work and it just will not. Tried using default drivers as suggested from another posting and will still not work. I did notice that the defualt HP printer install to try and get this Dell 1720 to work installed a DOT4 driver. Perhaps this issue is causing a problem as mentioned in one of the microsoft KB articles? Thank you very much for any help with this matter.

Hi All! I am new to Using Terminal Server and have a question about connecting a Dell 1720 to the local Wyse S90 ThinClient. I have everything running perfectly! All apps are running great and my remote location Wyse S90 Terminals are all connecting to my server via RDP beautifully. I am nearing the end of this installation and I need to add a few local printers to some of the Wyse S90 WinTerms. What are the necessary steps to take to add these local printers (Dell 1720) and will I be able to have these local printers be the default for those that will also have a network printer available? Thank you very much for any help you may be able to provide…

Default RDP Printer
by Guest Mark Stoker- 3 replies

When the user connects to the server it 'creates' an instance of the printer. I have a script that runs when the users logs on - this script is designed to get the users default printer and write it into a .ini file we have. It seems that the login script (GP set) runs before the users printer is 'created' and they always get the 'Microsoft Office Document Image Writer' as the default printer. I even tried running the script from the start-up menu but this doesn't work either.

I recently moved my Windows 2003 Terminal Server to a new hardware platform. Since then, none of the Event Log entries show the User corresponding to an error. All entries show the user as NA. My old terminal server used to show the User Name when there was an application error. Anybody have any ideas on what might be wrong? Thanks, -- Mike Schumann
