Sessions getting disconnected
by Guest RandyH- 8 replies
Users are complaining that they are getting kicked off our TS, a message pops up, I think it's the RDP client, but it says, The connection has been lost - Attempting to Reconnect Session. The session reconnects, and the user is back where at the screen where they lost connection. What is causing lost connections? Should we be tweaking something on the TS? Like this, HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server\WinStations\RDP-Tcp\KeepAliveTimeout? Tia, RandyH

Does anyone have experience with opening several dozen sessions under the same user account? I do not have a test network, for use, to observe if there will be any sort of degradation, or other problem. I work in an educational environment. Each classroom has one user login name. There will be approximately 30 terminals in a classroom. Thanks. -- rmth

I know that I can enable this throughout our organization using group policy, but what I want to be sure of is that the end-user has control over whether or not to allow the remote desktop session. I want to avoid any IT "big brother" perception. They already think we sit around reading their emails. ;) Thanks, JM

OU GPO - Problem setting TS Profile Path for users under a specifi
by Guest dudeDad- 8 replies

Here is what I am trying to accomplish: I have 3 different OUs : OU1, OU2, OU3 each with its own set of users. I want all users in OU1 to use the same Mandatory Profile. I want all users in OU2 to use a mandatory profile that is configured just for OU2, ...etc... I try to accomplish this by using a GPO at the OU level to set the TS Roaming profile. Unfortunately, it is not working. When i log in for the first time with one of the child users, it just creates a local account off the default user. Here is the setup: Each of these OUs has several user account defined under them: OU1 --> User11, User12, User13 OU2 --> User21, User22, User…

Problems with USB User printing in 2003 TS
by Guest JH- 8 replies

Hello, I have a situation where if I log in to my 2003 SP1 TS server as domain admin, I can see the USB HP 1505N redirected printer in the listing. If I print a test page it works then I log off and the printers are deleted with the session. When I log in as a regular user, I see the printer redirected and I go to print a test page and it doesn't get to the printer. It shows in the queue as a job pending but never completes. If I try and cancel the job it will just show deleting so then I try to log off the session and it never completes, it just shows saving settings in the window. For me to get the printing working again, I have to log back in as admin…

The lowdown- I have been tasked with setting up our TS enviorment so that when a user logs on they have limited access to the desktop and startbar. From what I have read this can be accomplished with TS user profiles. We have a SBS and 2 TS "TS1 and TS2" I am new at this but this is what i have accomplished so far: I created a new GPO and a new OU for TS1 and 2 -I created a shared folder on TS1 called TSProfiles -I created a test user and added it to the new GPO -I enabled loopback processing -I enabled admin security group to roaming profiles -Set the path for TS roaming profiles :\\TS1\TSProfiles * appends username Then I went to my test user and s…

Drive Redirection + Group Policies...
by Guest dt_moore@hotmail.com- 8 replies

Hi Guys, This is probably the dumbest question anyone has ever asked...but would appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction. Right now we have a Win2003 Server (domain controller) which users connect to using Remote Desktop. I want to be able to enable drive redirection (show local drives) for admin users and disable the drive redirection for normal users. I have setup two group policies, one for Admins and another linked to a security group I defined, which all the normal users are members of. The "Do not allow drive redirection" policy is DISABLED in the admin policy and ENABLED in the normal users policy (so the two polices have con…

How to run a script when a user logs onto Term Srv
by Guest pdx- 8 replies
I have a Windows 2003 SP2 server running Terminal Services. I want to run a script whenever any user logs onto the Terminal Server. The script will send an email to an administrative mailbox and is a method for actively tracking logons. The "start a program upon connection" gp setting won't work since I don't want to alter the session, I just want the script to run send the email whenever a user logs on to the Terminal Server. Anyone know how I can set up the script to run as planned? Thanks

Newbie Setup Question

We have a SBS2000 (not 2003) server running Active Directory & a Windows 2003 Server running as a Terminal server. We added (10) new XP client computers to the AD and (10) generically named users who are now just members of the "Domain Users" group. This setup for the sole purpose of the (1) clients/users running one application on the Terminal Server. It appears that if Active Directory were running on Windows 2003 Server we could just add the clients to the Remote Desktop USers group to accomplish some of the things we need to accomplish. However that group is not available in Windows 2000 AD. So here is our goal for the (10) new clients: 1. We want ev…

Remote running of VB app using TS
by Guest Markus- 7 replies
I need to test out a VB app running on TS. I would like to see what kind of speed I can get for multiple remote users (up to 5) running the app with TS. Am very new to TS. Right now I have 2 XP Home computers to use for this testing. As I understand it, XP home does not have TS capabiltiy. I believe I need to upgrade one computer to XP Pro to do this testing. Correct? If I do so, I believe this will allow up to 5 remote concurrent users (before I would need additional licenses) running the app on the upgraded XP Pro computer. Correct? I may run this app either over the Internet or on a LAN or WAN. If I run over the internet, can I test this…

Sessions "Time Out" but server still thinks active
by Guest Dan H.- 7 replies

Hi, Server 2000 We have WinXP laptops clients. A user will get kicked off so I was thinking it was a timeout issue. I checked to see that RDP manager was set to 1 hour and set to override user accounts. User account is 1 hour and Policy is same (yeah I know the override is checked but figured I provide this information as well). Well I monitored a session and it showed her session as continous for ex. 30 minutes but then in the manager I would see the same person connected so it would show she had 2 sessions going on. Then eventually session one would end because of the time limit. I asked her and she said she was booted as a timeout within minute…

Could someone explain how i can do this? I have a windows 2003 enterprise license server. In TS configuration/Server settings my only available option is Remote desktop for administration and i need to change to per device to be in sync with our terminal servers. It says to use Add/Remove but am unsure of which componets i am to add/remove. This server presently has over 300 temporary licenses issued and users are now receiving warnings that their client license is about to expire in x amout of days. This would also ideally be done during production hours. Thanks in advance,

Setting up first TS Server - Have I Done it right?
by Guest Chavvy- 7 replies

Guys, I have set up my first 2003 Terminal Server for a friend using TS user cals. This is a single server/domain and I had a few issues with remote sessions being able to connect. This turned out to be default security settings for the DC which I have now resolved. When I purchased the CALS I was told that these had to be installed against named AD users. After setting up the licence service and installing the cals throught internet/Microsoft, I can see no way of doing this. The licence server shows the 5 cals installed though and the installation was pretty smooth. What is worrying me is that the licences in use count does not go down as connections …

User Rights in TS
by Guest powlaz- 7 replies

We have an application or two that we run where the manufacturers recommends that any user be logged in as an administrator on the local PC. Being the good little lambs that we are we have always followed this rule. Anyway now that we are set up with a Terminal Server I am seeing, more than ever, why the need for each user to have local admin rights is such a concern. It looks to me like every user of the TS needs to be added to the local Remote Desktop Users group on the TS. In addition it seems I will need to make these users members of the Administrators group which unfortunately provides Admin rights to the Domain as well as the local PC. We do…

Client disconnected problem

I need help diagnosing problem at a customer's site. They are running Win 2003 Server. They have a couple of Pocket PC devices that run the TS client. Terminal Services is set to auto logon clients and launch an application. This has worked fine for a couple of years. Now one PPC gets the message "Terminal services client disconnected. The connection to the server has timed out". The other PPC still works fine. I can ping the server and open the server in Windows Explorer on the PPC. Hard reset the PPC. No change. No message in the event log of the server. I can take my laptop (running W2K server) and run the TS client and connect fine. I can …
