Domain Member Licensing
by Guest Brett Chapman- 1 reply
I am trying to understand the licensing for Terminal Server Services. I have a Server 2003 server with some applications on that I would like people to be able to run remote desktop on. The user's machines are all in different domains, but they have accounts in the domain the server resides in. Will these users be able to connect to the RDP server in my domain, or will the licensing prevent this unless it is in an enterprise role?

Terminal Service session slow on Vista for just one server
by Guest Hassan- 8 replies
So I am trying to terminal service into this particular host and every click of the mouse takes like 30 secs. Its like as if it freezes and then wakes up when i try to navigate through the session. So here is what I know so far.. On another Vista PC and on XP, it works fine and I can navigate through it fast. This behavior is being seen on 2 PCs so far and I dont know if its because of the Cisco VPN client that we have installed. I uninstalled it as well and it still works as such. Infact this behaviour is to only one of the hosts that I terminal service into and not other hosts. Other hosts work fine. So it feels like its between my XP and this…

What am i doing wrong or what is the right way to install certificates in a Terminal Server enviroment? Kind regards, Remco

Profiles Documents and Settings
by Guest Mikecl- 7 replies

Hi, I would like to clarify what profile info gets stored where. I have a win2k3 Server running TS approx 50 different users connect to it and run one App on the TS (configured to run when they connect) there are no other profile settings configured either in Group Policy or on the user profile settings. When the user connect via TS each user gets a (presumably) TS profile crated in C:\doc&Sett they are not particularly large but each but obviously this takes up space so now the dir contains data approx 2.5GB or so. I have read various bits of info about changing the location to a different drive and redirecting my docs etc. I configured one partcular…

Configure default profile
by Guest Brian- 4 replies
How can I configure a default profile for new terminal server users? This is a Win2K TS, although it will likely be upgraded to Win2003 TS soon. I don't want to force them back to this with each logon; I just want to save myself some time by having a default desktop that removes the temptation to use IE & My Documents via the terminal server, etc. They will need to copy various start menu icons to their desktops after the initial logon I want to customize these items. Right now, I log on as each user one time to configure these before the user logs on: No Internet Explorer on desktop No My Docs on desktop Desktop colors (I always start them at bla…

Using Terminal Services to Connect to Virtual Server
by Guest DJ Pomeroy- 2 replies
Is this possible? I'm looking to upgrade my server to running x64 software. The catch is that one program will not run under this so I want to install this into a virtual server running in 32-bit mode. Then I would like to have remote users use RDP to connect directly to the virtual server running this program and completely bypass the parent OS. Is this possible? I'd like to have it as such: OS - Windows Server x64 2003 Virtual Server Running Windows Server 2003 (32-bit) Hosting SoftwareABC End Users running XP/Vista using RDP Connecting directly to Server 2003 (32-bit) To run SoftwareABC Thanks.

Strange behavior moving from W2K TS to W2K3 TS
by Guest Miles B- 0 replies
(Please excuse the long post, I want to give all the details to help you understand this problem and our environment. Thanks). We are receiving strange results moving a Point-of-Sale (POS) application from W2K TS to W2K3 TS. The difficulties *appear* to be entirely W2K3 related in the way it handles traffic. Existing W2K TS Server hosts TS and the application. Dual Xeon processors with 4 GB RAM, plenty of hard drive space, 15 remote "cash register" connections running POS application and printing to Epson TM88 thermal receipt printer on LPT1 using Generic/Text Only driver. New W2K3 TS server being used as pass-through TS server only to application …

Terminal Services Application Error
by Guest Luke Robertson- 2 replies
Hi, I'm having a problem with a Terminal Server. The network is SBS 2003 R1 based. The terminal server is Windows 2003 Server R2 SP2 with Citrix. The local drive is setup as G:\ , not C:\ (for Citrix reasons). I am having intermittent issues with applications. It seems to go through short 'phases' (of a few minutes at a time - 15min or so) where programs don't start, and users can't log on. Programs that are already running are usually fine, and users that are already logged on are not kicked out. In the System Log, I get 'application popup' error 333. 'An I/O operation initiated by the Registry failed unrecoverably. The Registry could not read in,…

Terminal Services added for more Bandwidth Support
by Guest Masitpro_mcse- 2 replies

Reposting as of 11/14 - Have a VPN server that works fine, but on an application that is VB FoxPro based it works slower then usual maybe because it requires more bandwidth to run. Is it possible to install Terminal Services on the server with this program installed to help increase speed and bandwidth? If so how do I implement it to link to the VPN server and is it available to install as a windows server component? Is there a service bulletin available to help me with this situation? -- Mark Anthony MCSE 2003

by Guest Lance- 3 replies

I have a 2k3 Terminal server that has been set up and running for approximately 2 years, which as been updated to SP1, SP2 and RC2, with all current Updates. I need to replace this server so I am setting up a new Terminal Server. I set up the new server using RC2, installed SP2 and did all the windows updates. Set up all the Licensing and Terminal Services configurations the EXACT SAME as the original Terminal Server that has been running for about 2 years just fine. Now the problem. Users can log on with no problems. But when I try to remote control the users using Terminal Server Manager, the exact same as I do with the 2 year old Terminal Serv…

Windows Explorer Tool Bar
by Guest Jimmy Jones- 1 reply
I am setting up a Terminal Server for the purpose of serving 3 specific applications. Users should only be able to access these 3 applications but they need to be able to switch between the 3 and use data between the 3. they should also be able to close an application and open another. To accomplish this I have created a folder with a shortcut to each of the 3 applications and set up the terminal server to run "explorer.exe <path>" when the user logs on. In group policy I have been able to remove the address bar and the File menu but I would also like to remove the edit, view, tools, and help menu. I have 3 questions: 1: How can I remove…

shadowing
by Guest seth- 7 replies

I know this might be a very simple question, but can a non-administrator have the ability to shadow another session? I have a user trying to share a session with another user on a terminal server and can't seem to shadow. She gets an error (I asked her to tell me what error it is) and was wondering if it was because she is not an admin on that system.

Unable to set a default printer
by Guest Jimmy Jones- 3 replies
I have a Terminal server that is being used by several people. All of them have their profile stored on a local volume and all of them are granted permissions through a common NT security group. One of the users is unable to select a default printer, none of the others has this problem. When I look at the printers she has to choose from they are the same as what are installed on her local client. She is able to select a default printer on her local client. In a Terminal Server session her printers do not show a default selected. If she opens an application and prints using the print dialog from the File menu there is no printer selected in the dial…

Windows 2003 Terminal Services Licensing
by Guest MShawRMTD- 5 replies

Hello, I am an inhouse support technician for a Transit agency. We currently have a Windows 2000 Terminal Server hosting our backoffice software to our remote offices. We are currently looking at getting two new servers. But I am unsure of what licenses I would need to setup for these. I have been told that for every TS CAL i will need a Local CAL. Is this correct? Example: 20 Local Workstations = 20 Local CALS 25 Remote Workstations = 25 TS CALs + 25 Local Cals for a total of 45 Local CALs and 35 TS CALs

Remote Desktop Connection Annoyance
by Guest Eric L.- 3 replies
Sorry if this has already been answered, but I had a hard time finding the right words to search for this issue. When I am remotely connecting to one of our servers, RDC has the annoying habit of prefixing the servername I am connecting to before my username. This is a problem because the terminal server is not an Active Directory server and therefore my network password does not authenticate; i.e. my network account is treated as a local account. The error it gives is "The system could not log you on. Make sure your user name and domain are correct..." By default, I would like it to say: User name: [{username} ] Password: […

domain:s: parameter for RDP
by Guest Stephen Jones- 2 replies
Has anyone got any workarounds for the domain parameter (as used in .rdp), which stopped working in RDP 6.0? We are a multi-domain, multi-terminal server environment with services across trusts. It is simply unviable and unreasonable for users to maintain lists of which domain they should log on to for which terminal server. We make extensive use of 'hardcoding' the domain so that this is always corrected listed when they remote desktop. ta in advance, Steph

Hi, Most of our customers access our application via remote desktop. the connection automatically runs our application when they log in. But we have noticed with Windows 2003 X64 edition, when they exit the application the session either doesnt log off or can take minutes to come out. Is there anyway we can kill this process immedietely after the application has closed? I've searched the internet and havent found any real answers. Your help would be most appreciated. Scott
