I bought a new laptop last summer and have only recently started using it. Its an Acer Aspire A315-51 running Windows 10. However, it's driving me up the walls. Everytime I try to do anything the circle spins round and round forever on webpages. I get Error - timed out, No Internet Connection or The site can't be reached, DNS probe messages. This happens about 50% of the time. I click refresh and the page loads fine usually. There's no problem with my internet as my other laptop and my tablet both work fine with no problems. As it's a new laptop, it isn't loaded up with a pile of junk but I have tried CCleaner and running virus checks which are all fine. I tried…

I have a largish system in the house with several PCs and laptops connected either by lan or wifi. All are linked on a common workgroup All but one runs with W10pro 64bit and installation has been no problem. Three of my PCs are near identical - i.e all the same Dell model type although they have different speed processors However on one, due to a HDD issue, I have done a clean reinstall on a new HDD using the latest W10 iso and although installation seemed work fine I am now having two distinct issues which may or may not be related. 1) When using Edge my mouse becomes very jittery and won't respond properly 2) I can't connect to my router USB drive even thoug…

HI - I posted a problem under the networking threads but so far no-one has responded and so I wondered if it should be really under the W10 section as I can't really work out if the problem is actually a network issue or an OS issue - so here is the link to the other post in the hope someone can help.

Sorry to say, but 2019 has not ushered in new “tips to bypass FB” as it supposedly limits posts on your news feed. Nor has Facebook ushered in a new algorithm that “chooses the same few people – about 25 – who will read your posts”, at least not that we’ve heard. Rather, we’re still stuck with whatever murky, stubbornly unfathomable algorithms Facebook uses to determine the order of content in our feeds, regardless of what the latest, breathless spin on this wheezy old hoax wants you to believe. To wit: The last time we wrestled with this particular pudding was back in February when Snopes debunked the viral hoax and said no, a new Facebook algorithm will NOT …

I have got a new laptop with W10. It replace my desktop that went bang last week. The sales person got the thing running. It is slow as well. I have gone through the thread where it advises how to get rid of adverts but I still seem to get them 'orible things' in between playing Solitaire etc.. Should the seven things mentioned get rid of the lot? I am of two minds to put in W7 that I have here. jim'

I raised part of this in an earlier post but now really need to move forward so having thought about the advice given earlier and having had several attempts at getting a usable wi fi system around my house using wireless repeaters, I have finally come to the conclusion that maybe the best way to achieve my needs is by using a homeplug/powerline system to satisfy the needs of our family of 5 who all have devices connecting to the internet.. The main problem is that I live in a rambling old house with very thick walls and wi fi seemingly cannot penetrate to any useful extent. In addition I now have a boy at uni who needs a good connection for his studies but his room is…

This may sound a bit odd but I have two near identical Dell PCs and want to swap them over - the issue is I want to transplant the HDDs from one machine into the other and visa versa and the reason for doing so is that the processor on one machine is only 2,2 ghz but the other is 3 ghz and I want the faster machine to take on the work being done currently by the slower one. With Balarc Advisor if am able to see the assigned serial numbers for the w10 installation for each machine and so was wondering if I simply swapped the HDDS then when I run up the PCS change the update the licence code on each to that which the machine held previously. The only other option seem…

I have a router with a usb drive which seems to be vulnerable to malware - in the past I have had unsavoury links appear on it and recently I get a warning that photo.src is there and it gets deleted by Avira but after a time it reappears. It only seems to occur on the router USB drive and nowhere else on the connected PCs. Today I removed the USB drive from the router and reformatted it but should I be doing anything else?

HELP PLEASE..... Up until earlier this week I have had internet via copper cable running at around 8-15MBPS which although not fast worked pretty well for downloads although uploading was normally only 0.5 to 1 mbps which made some work very slow. We run several pcs on from the Ethernet connetions and have had up to 4 connected at any one time but most not accessing the internet most of the time so all worked pretty well and our little network enabled file sharing etc to work really well. A part of a package offer, we have now had fibre installed through Orange with a supposed speed of 100mbps although there is a promotion where for a while we have 500mbps. The …

Hi Everyone. I have an old HP desktop pc running windows XP. It has got so cluttered over the years and takes ages to boot up. I am wanting to reset it back to factory settings. I know everyone says hit the F11 key te reset it, but, there is no F11 option on the screen as it passes by. I went to "compmgmt.msc" and then into "disk management" and it shows the whole drive is disk C: there is no partition with any recovery programs/software. I have a friend who also has an HP desktop pc running XP. On his pc, going to "compmgmt.msc" and "disk management" shows the disk drive C: but has a partition labelled "HP_RECOVERY" So the question is, Is it possible to somehow…

Yesterday the computer failed following the bang mentioned above. Initially I thought it was just the lead shorting out until I used another lead. It did the same thing! The flash and the bang came from the same area, the power supply and the end of the lead. Upon dismantling there was nothing to indicate that the power supply had caused the burning/smell. The leads were hot and the switch on the extension plug burnt out-it would not work. No one carries them in stock around here and I am obliged to use SWMBO's AIO Dell. Jim.

Traditional antivirus software has a tough time detecting malware used in the campaign. A new, active campaign is using malware capable of dancing around traditional antivirus solutions in order to empty cryptocurrency wallets. The malware is being used in the DarkGate campaign, a previously undetected hacking operation uncovered this week by enSilo security researchers. According to the team, DarkGate is currently underway in Spain and France, targeting Microsoft Windows PCs by way of torrent files. Torrent files are most commonly associated with pirated content, but the technology itself is not illegal and can be used by consumers and businesses alike to…

An unnecessary coupling between browser and operating system made compatibility too hard. As reported earlier this week, Microsoft is going to use Google's Blink rendering engine and V8 JavaScript engine in its Edge browser, largely ending development of its own EdgeHTML rendering engine and Chakra JavaScript engine. This means that Microsoft will be using code from—and making contributions to—the Chromium open source project. The company's browser will still be named Edge and should retain the current look and feel. The decision to switch was motivated primarily by compatibility problems: Web developers increasingly test their pages exclusively in Chrome, which…
