Researchers have noticed a sudden spike in a phishing attack that sends malware-ridden attachments as replies to real email conversations. There's been a spike in the number of cyber-attacks that hijack ongoing email conversations and turn them into a vehicle for delivering malware. Conversation-hijacking attacks are when hackers manage to infiltrate legitimate email threads between people, and use highly-customised phishing techniques to make it look as if the victim is the one sending messages back and forth. By ensuring that people believe they're interacting with a person they trust -- perhaps someone even within the same organisation -- the scammers hope vic…

Shurl0ckr, a form of Gojdue ransomware, was not detected on SharePoint or Google Drive. https://i.imgur.com/9re4GLC.jpg Google Drive and Microsoft Office 365, both of which have built-in malware protection, failed to identify a new form of Gojdue ransomware dubbed Shurl0ckr. The zero-day ransomware evaded most major antivirus platforms: only seven percent of 67 tested tools detected it. Researchers on the Bitglass Threat Research Team discovered Shurl0ckr during a scan of malware in the cloud. It was confirmed as a form of ransomware-as-a-service by Cylance. Shurl0ckr works the same way as Satan ransomware. A hacker creates a ransomware payload and distribu…

Get an ad-blocker if you want to dodge tech-support scammers' latest rapid-download ruse. https://i.imgur.com/l1LGWa6.png Tech-support scammers have developed a new trick to freeze browsers on a bogus security alert with a number to a fake support line. The ultimate goal of the browser freeze is to cause stress to lots of potential victims in the hope some will call the bogus hotline offered in the alert. Previously, tech-support scams have used pop-under windows, pop-up loops, and other shady techniques that aim to prevent users from closing the bogus security alert page. Scammers frequently use malicious ads to nudge browser users to booby-trapped webpages …

Before I purchased the community I took a look back in time using http://web.archive.org. What I saw was a site that was active with a great team leading it and a group of members that were loyal to the site. That wasn't so very long ago. I am unsure how or why FPCH seemed to lose it's way. I do know that I plan to put it back on course. One thing I noticed was the magazine site. There were some great articles posted on that site. I don't know why that part of the site was removed. I do know that any loss of user sign ups and traffic is related to that part of the site being closed. Content is King. Prospective users love it. The search engines love it. Google especial…

I'll start a new thread as the other one is as old as the hills and praises Firefox, I want to blast them. Today I upgraded Firefox, after holding off for a while, so any bugs would have been fixed. I've moved to version 56.0.4 (64 bit) and I'm disappointed, not with the browser, it seems to work fine, but because things seem to have been moved around just for the sake of moving them around. I've always been a visual person, remembering things with stored images in my brain, I think many others use this method of remembering also, but when something is moved or renamed it makes it harder to use, especially for old fogies like me. This was a trick of Micros…

I bought a new HP laptop last November and I was able to connect my blackberry 9360 curve via a USB port and transfer pictures from the mobile to my laptop. This will not work now. Before I was given the option of charging or transferring files. Now it just charges and I am given no other option. I just tried it on my old desktop and the same problem happens there too. Back on the laptop if I go to Devices and printers, troubleshooting it does say "Issue found, USB composite device cannot work properly with USB 3.0 USB composite device is an older USB device and might not work with USB 3.0". I have 3 USB ports and have tried it in every port. Funny t…

Yes Hi all, especially KenB, Tried to contact you, unfortunately I need 10 posts before I can send or reply to a PM. In reply to your PM yes, but I think it's more than the skin, it seems to be the whole forum SW and they've failed to properly link the DB to the forum properly. If you can open up my PM it will save this. Sorry to others, but Ken will know what this is all about, I hope. Cheers Neddie

Hi all, Merry Christmas. Hope this post is okay on this forum. I've been given an Amazon 7 for a prezzie. Now hoping to become au fait with it, but whizz-kid I am not. But does anyone know if, having downloaded OS maps which show all roads etc, but not walking paths/routes crossing moors fields etc etc, if it's possible to find an app that will allow this, free or otherwise? I know this is possible on smart phones, where a route can be planned, or even automatically recorded whilst walking & then saved. To be able to do likewise on this tablet would be the bees-knees. Thanks in anticipation.

The 'LightsOut' adware is found in flashlight and utility apps, which have been downloaded between 1.5 million to 7.5 million times. https://i.imgur.com/rKid1FQ.jpg New adware dubbed "LightsOut" is making the rounds in Google Play, hiding in 22 flashlight and utility apps that have been download up to 7.5 million times, reports Check Point Research, which made the discovery. LightsOut embeds its malicious script into flashlight and utility apps that appear legitimate. It then hides its icon when the app is launched, making it difficult for the user to remove the adware. Although the malicious app offers users a control panel and checkbox to disable additiona…

I have a small network around my property with 5 pc linked together connected by a workgroup. 3 run W10 64 bit pro - 1 runs W7 pro 64 bit and one runs W10 home 64 bit. On all but one PC everything works fine and I can "see" all my other pcs from any PC and also a drive connected to my router which is used as a mini server - i.e. it holds links etc for use by all the other PCs and acts as an emergency backup system. The W10 pc is not however able to see my router drive. (It does see the router but not the associated drives) It sees the other PCs but not the router drive and I cant figure out why this should be as some time ago it worked fine. There has been a rash …

This particular problem was only noticed this morning. One of the front USB ports does not work with a flash drive but works with a camera. The speakers emit a sound when the camera is connected and switched on but no sound when the flash drive is inserted. The USB's to the rear seem to be unaffected and I hear a confirming 'dong' when I insert the flash drive.. Jim.

After installing the latest W10 updates I find I now have a new little partition on my C drive called - System Reserved. Never has such a thing before - or at least it has never showed up as a drive with a drive letter before. It is set at 99 mbytes with 65 mbytes free but there is nothing in it! How did it get there? Can it be safely removed? - I get dire warnings if I try and delete saying other things may well not then function.

On just on of my machines - a laptop running W10 64 bit home, a recent update has caused Teamviewer to stop connecting. It gives a message saying the antivirus (Avira Pro) is preventing a connection - this also happens if I try and access the Teamviewer website. Everything else appears to connect fine. All was well just a week ago and I was able to access this PC easily but then there was a W10 update and an Avira update and after that the issue started. Searching the web for a solution appears only to show solutions for older versions of software and I can find nothing relevant to our setup. We have the same AV software on several other machines and they are all work…
