Read full story: Google move 'black day' for China (Source: BBC News) I saw a feature about censorship in China on BBC's only technology TV programme, previously called "Click Online" but recently changed to just "Click". They showed how many websites we would consider fine to browse are considered incorrect or unlawful by the Chinese authorities. For instance, the BBC News site simply isn't accessible from China. Crazy, huh? It's wrong to be judgemental but with 1.3 billion people living there, you might've expected a few to revolt and demand censorship to be stopped. Then again, with 1.3 billion people there's probably such a variety they find no need to discover …

...will I ever go back? I haven't completely given up Windows, but I'm not using it right now. I only find a need for it when I feel like playing the popular 3D games, which is actually not that often. I wonder, will I ever be convinced to go back to the new version when it comes out? I mean, I like Ubuntu right now because everything is free (you can't 'steal' it), it doesn't lock you in to particular companies and file formats and it does everything I want it to. I am curious if the new Windows Vista will have real features or just 'features' Microsoft have convienently borrowed from Apple, the free community or other companies. This isn't so much of a stab at Mic…

I'll be 17 in August of this year, so I've been researching for the cheapest possible car insurance. For new drivers, it is bound to be extremely expensive. So, I'm going for a Group 1 car that will have low tax and hopefully low-ish insurance. The cheapest I could find to insure myself for my first year's driving (obviously presuming that I even pass) is... £1108. Shocking! That was with Tesco's car insurance. With the same quote system and car but using my girlfriend's details... £484! So women drivers must be safer, that's all I can conclude. That and the fact that a lot of newly-passed drivers end up "souping up" their "beasts" and drive around smashing people. Any…

PDA's

I’ve decided against the idea of a Mac Mini for the time being. I am going to get a PDA instead. I would use it a hell of a lot more than a Mac anyway. I’ve been looking for a relatively cheap, but packed with features PDA, and i have to give it to them, Dell (shudders) have done an excellent job. I normally hate Dell, but I’m prepared to make an exception. I have ordered a Dell Axim X30 624mhz PDA with Bluetooth and WI-FI. I was originally looking for HP iPAQ’s which I love completely, but somehow Dell has turned me towards them. Although the HP’s are great, sexy and just brilliant :), only the top notch specs had wireless and Bluetooth. The Dell with a grand pric…

Every now and again I get utterly bored and I am sitting at my computer. (Doesn't everyone?) One idea I have is to write a useful PHP script that I can release under the GPL for anyone to use. What do you think I should write? I want to make something useful but slightly different or unique. :) Edit: I only want to write something that will be able to be utilized by lots of people, i.e. they download and use it on their own website.

Welcome to Issue 2 of the security newsletter, dated Wed 1st Feb 2006. There is now a new section to the weekly newsletter called "Focus of the Week" where I will take a major security issue and explain exactly what it is and how it can affect you and your business. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Focus of the Week: Phishing Phishing is the act of tricking someone into giving them confidential information or tricking them into doing something that they normally wouldn’t do or shouldn’t do. For example: sending an e-mail to a user falsely claiming to be an established legitimate enterprise in an attemp…

Mike was kinda enought to post me a link on msn with bill gates hour or so long talk on upcoming products things like airport desks that will reconise your phone when placed on them .. which then brings up little monitor and if you place a bussiness card on the desk it reconises the text on the card and scans it and then you can add it to your phone .. i for one thing this is some idea that would be greatly used if M$ wasnt doing it :P but another main thing i liked was young Bills 4 screen glass panel projected monitor .. apart from being widely huge and entreging i really would love to have one, i think its sooo nice, i think he has a currently updated beta of vist…

Security experts are rambling on that people should be using software firewall on their computer to protect them from unauthorised access (eg hackers). Among them are Zone alarm and Norton internet security (of which I both detest!) You would be surprised how easy it is for a hacker to disable these, by simply accepting a friendly/innocent file (from Instant Messenger, Emails, Websites, etc), they can completely disable firewalls and create a pathway into your computer. However security has tightened up dramatically and it is not as big of a problem as it was 5 years ago. Now it is much more difficult to bypass anti-viruses and firewalls, however the threat is still…
