A new variant of the Apocalypse Ransomware was released that utilizes the VMProtect software protection product. Using VMProtect, the ransomware developers hoped to make it more difficult for security researchers to reverse engineer their ransomware. Over the weekend, Fabian Wosar, of Emsisoft, was able to get past the VMProtect protection and create a decryptor for the latest variant of the Apocalypse Ransomware's encrypted files. This new variant uses the .encrypted and .locked extensions and will create a ransom note called [filename].How_To_Get_Back.txt for each file that is encrypted. For example, the ransom note for the test.jpg file will be called test.j…

Nemucod ransomware makes a comeback after security researchers cracked one of its earlier iterations http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v708/starbuck50/nemucod-ransomware-uses-javascript-and-php-concoction-to-infect-users-505486-2_zpstsygy8yu.jpg The latest version of the Nemucod ransomware uses a combination of JavaScript and PHP code to infect users and encrypt their files. Nemucod first appeared in March 2015, and at its base, the malware is a simple dropper. Droppers, also called malware downloaders, infectors, or loaders, are simplistic malware families specialized in the "infection" process and nothing more. After this occurs, they then download more pot…

The new feature downloads and installs a fresh copy of Windows, killing any pre-installed apps bundled in by PC manufacturers. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v708/starbuck50/tool_zpsrxoe1xd6.jpg It seems even Microsoft is getting sick of bloatware. The software giant has built a tool designed to "refresh" systems with a new copy of Windows 10, which takes aim at preinstalled junk apps, the security flaw-ridden apps that come bundled with almost every new consumer PC. The tool was first released in May, but is now included as part of Microsoft's second "fast-ring" test build of Windows 10 Anniversary Update this week. ZDNet's Mary Jo Foley has more on wh…

Good Afternoon, I'm a first timer here and hope i will be able to learn more by joining this forum. As I’m a late learner in using computers I have always relied on the automatic updates which hasn’t cause me any concern until a few months ago; where I started to get pressure pop-ups to install Windows 10 So at the young age of 70, I decided that enough is enough, and now I'm trying to take control in what is actually installed on my laptop by stopping all automatic updates and checking them out myself I started by uninstalled KB3035583 which I was informed would hopefully stop the reacurrence of WINDOWS 10 reminder? My very first check for updates was today a…

Crypt38 ransomware had a short life, is already defeated http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v708/starbuck50/simple-encryption-algorithm-allows-decryption-of-crypt38-ransomware-505387-3_zpsxyfkrgvr.png A new ransomware family called Crypt38 uses a simple encryption routine that allowed Fortinet researchers to reverse engineer the process and find a method of unlocking files. Named Crypt38 because it appends the .crypt38 extension to all encrypted files, this ransomware's infection method is currently unknown. What we know is that the ransomware seems to be targeting only Russian users at the moment, and based on the simplistic encryption routine and low ransom d…

Hi Scott, Ok, let's take a look at your system and see if anything throws some light on this. As you are running a 32bit system.......... For x32 bit systems download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop. Double-click the downloaded icon to run the tool. Hi all. SWMBO can't access her emails (outlook) instead a message came saying to verify who she was, she had to enter a code that would be sent to our landline after she'd given our number. The landline rang immediately & gave a code number to enter, then rang off. By not following these instructions, untrustworthy? she still can't access her emails. The name that accompanied the email was "Overprotective" Help would be appreciated. Thanks.

While everybody was expecting Locky, Cryptxxx, or Cerber, Crysis swoops in to steal the show from the headliners http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v708/starbuck50/crysis-ransomware-appears-from-thin-air-to-take-teslacrypt-s-place-505082-3_zpsn66svno1.png Three weeks after ESET was announcing that the infamous TeslaCrypt ransomware was shutting down operations, the Slovakian security firm is now reporting on the ransomware that's taken TeslaCrypt's place. Named Crysis, first versions of this ransomware were spotted online in mid-February. ESET claims that these first versions were not some of the best they've seen, and the company's experts believe they might be…

Hello again all, I've recently read of someone switching their PC on, making a brew or whatever & when they've returned to their PC, Windows 10 has automatically been installed? & was still uploading for hours & they couldn't stop it, nor do any work. I used to get the box pushing the 10 upgrade which was a damn pain, but a forumite on here explained how to block this intrusion, which I did & haven't had any issues since. I still don't want 10 as I'm perfectly happy with 8.1, but surely this underhand update is going a tad too far........ if it's true

It takes less than a minute to opt-out of Facebook's new ads system. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v708/starbuck50/fb-hero-phone_zpszwm1mldm.jpg Facebook member or not, the social networking giant will soon follow you across the web -- thanks to its new advertising strategy. From today, the billion-plus social network will serve its ads to account holders and non-users -- making one giant push in the same footsteps as advertising giants like Google, which has historically dominated the space. In case you didn't know, Facebook stores a lot of data on you. Not just what you say or who you talk to (no wonder it's a tempting trove of data for government surv…
