Thank you both for trying to help me to sort the problem out with my laptop. I tried to see if it would work with and without the battery but had no luck. A friend of ours brought around another adapter and that seems to have done the trick. So you were spot on, it was to do with the power supply. Thanks again for your help...it's really appreciated

Hi...if there's anyone out there that can help with this problem, it'd be really grateful. :) I have checked all leads and all cables are plugged in correctly. If I press the start up button the three lights at the bottom of the computer (power, battery and drive light indicators) flash but nothing happens. There's not even the sound of the fan starting up. The computer has just ran out of its warranty (20 days ago..typical1)..so i can't get any technical help from the company. The computer is a Compaq Presario CQ61
