  1. I tried to download recent important security updates, but all it does is stay at 0%, even after an hour!. I am still using Windows 7 Pro 64 bit, Chrome browser and Kaspersky Internet Security. I have my update setting on 'check with me before downloading' as I don't want Windows 10 and always make sure I remove the tick in that box before downloading updates. Has anyone got any suggestions please. Thank you.
  2. Thanks for that Starbuck. I wander if anyone else has this further problem as a consequence of reverting back to Windows 8.1. Windows10 is sitting in my update waiting to be downloaded again, but there is an important security update for Flash pending as well. When I ticked this Flash update to install, Windows10 keeps starting to reinstall itself again which I don't want. I am not sure what browser this security update is for as I use Chrome which I think has Flash embedded.
  3. I decided to upgrade my Asus Windows 8.1 laptop rather than my W7 Pro desktop as I would rather mess that up and I don't like 8.1 with all the tiles and that annoying charms bar. The only downside of 10 was it slowed the computer down somewhat and the blue download circle kept flashing non-stop so I reverted back to 8.1 but it still kept flashing!! Eventually more by trial and error I uninstalled some of the pre-installed Asus software such as cloud storage and gesture and that cured it, no more flashing blue circle.
  4. Just to update. I have erased the HD with the plan to download and re-install either Mavericks or Yosemite, now all I get is 'This item is temporarily unavailable' Try again later. It seems that one is unable to download the OS for whatever reason. I have no disk but could buy Snow Leopard and try that......any thoughts would be appreciated as I really want to ditch this laptop.
  5. When I click on the Apple icon in the top left corner I have a menu which includes Force Quit, Sleep, Restart, Shut Down then lastly Log Out surname. This has been re-set as I said because it has reverted back to Mavericks from Yosemite. System Preferences-Users & Groups-current user surname Admin. I don't want to start fiddling and make things worse so can I assume there will be no further info.
  6. Thanks for the replies. Now had this laptop factory reset professionally and hope to recycle it. My only remaining query is that even though it's been reset, my surname still appears as 'admin' and again it seems one has to jump through convoluted hoops to erase this, so is there an EASY way to do it as I don't want to dispose of it with my name in it. Thank you.
  7. I did a restore to factory settings this evening which took nearly three hours, which I thought would have worked, but no, gone in a complete circle and back to original logo, my name and password request. This puzzled me as I would have done this if I intended to sell it on so why has it not 'erased' me?
  8. I have decided to move over to iOS and give it a try, so have bought a refurbished Mac Pro with Yosemite. Being Windows orientated I am completely muddled (multiple grey moments) but my initial problem is I cannot log in with the password I created the account with, both lower and upper case correct. I changed to the same password on my iPad and that works so could anyone suggest an easy way to change this on the Mac. Many thanks in advance.
  9. Hi Nev. Mail shot back to normal this week. Both Word and PDF docs opened, so removing this update has done the trick. As for the other updates you mention I don't seem to have them. Reading through the recent PC magazines it seems as though eight of their updates had to be reissued.
  10. Thanks for the reply. I am using MSE anti-virus. I did consider changing Live Mail settings to accept all docs, but didn't want to run the risk. However after some searching I think it may be related to a recent MS Office 2010 update 2589275 which was downloaded around 9-13th September. I managed to delete this and left the original MS Office 2010 alone. I will have to wait until next weeks email to see if it has worked. Again thank you for your reply.
  11. Over the last few weeks I have been unable to open a weekly email from a well known and respected organization. Initially it was sent in both PDF and Word so I could open it with the PDF, however this week it was only a Word document so had to delete. The warning is :- Prohibited File Type. This message contains an attachment whose file type is considered dangerous. This file has been deactivated. I am using Windows Livemail with Windows 7 Professional and Office 2010 Starter. My query is, has this anything to do with a recent Windows update? and I think it is a docx?. Any advice would be appreciated.
  12. Thanks again KenB. Automatic Update service was ok. The SelfUpdate Package installation was failing still with error 0x8007246 but managed to find Hotfix KB947821 System Update Readiness Tool which I downloaded and and to my surprise actually worked, resulting in downloading 130 odd updates! As for the corrupt file I think I can live with that at the moment.
  13. Thank you KenB. Have tried the Fixit several times but will not work. Looking through the logs.....Windows Update Agent 7.6.7600.256 keeps failing. I am giving up with this computer now(Dell one) and just use it for word processing and leave off line.
  14. Re: my previous thread on install problem. Taken me a while to sort this Dell PC out which was a steep learning curve, but managed to replace the drivers from the disk (which were there all the time :o) so have internet access. My remaining problems are that the corrupted file is still there CBS.log windir\logs\CBS\CBS.log if this makes sense and I am unable to start Windows Update (80070246 and dt100 codes) so are these files related? Are there any simple ways to resolve this please? Thank you in advance and for the previous help.:)
  15. Have been on the Dell site with my tag number but totally confused me, also Microsoft and Intel sites but don't understand what to download. I think the drivers I need are for Intel ® 5 series/3400 series chipset PCI express root port6-3B4C. Integrated Intel GMA accelerator X4500 graphics, also no Network Adapter driver so cannot get online. I am now at my novice limit and wits end!. I still have the drivers and utilities disk that came with the computer but doesn't really do much when I insert it.
