1. Initial findings are very good. Developers provide good feedback (here) and support is pretty fast. Disappointing their web account password reset is a simple plain text email (!!) but Im onto them about that.
2. The uninstall tool didn't appear to find anything as I usually run CCleaner's Registry Cleaner after any uninstall but no harm done. My system didn't like Bit Defender. It locked up a few times so I got rid of it before it caused any damage. I've enabled and updated Windows Defender to see what it's like and I've also installed VoodooShield on advice received elsewhere as it will also protect against CryptoWare. Fingers crossed! Thanks again.
3. Thanks for your reply Starbuck. I don't think I explained clearly but I had actually tried all you suggested already but decided to give it another go anyway. After stopping everything from loading and uninstalling AVG once again I loaded everything back up - minus the now unavailable AVG. Loading was indeed better so I took the plunge and reinstalled AVG. The issue returned. I'm pretty sure now that the cause is the recently updated AVG (2016.0.7227) with the new 'AVG Zen' control panel. I've never been a huge fan of AVG to be honest but it was the lesser of a few evils when I installed it and of course it's free. I'm therefore now on the hunt for a new A/V to hopefully correct the issue. Any suggestions appreciated. Cheers again.
4. Hi, My laptop has recently been experiencing a long delay of up to two minutes in loading any startup items after boot / reboot. The system loads and displays the Windows Start screen, after which I usually immediately click the Desktop icon and await the loading of all my auto-startup programs including Privatefirewall, A.V.G., S.A.S., PeerBlock, etc. However, since performing the latest Windows Updates on or just after 'update Tuesday', there is a delay - or apparent hang - of up to two minutes, in between the time the desktop displays and my first auto-startup program icon appears in the taskbar. Loading Task Manager to view running processes is also unresponsive, and only eventually appears after this initial, strange, delay. I have managed to take a screen shot (below) as soon as Task Manager does appear, which shows that the disc is almost 100% in use, and always by two instances of Service host:Local System. I have tried disabling (and rebooting after) all startup items one-by-one but none have fixed the issue. I've also removed AVG - and reinstalled - again, no fix. What can I do to try and fault-find and hopefully solve this issue please? Thank you in advance.
5. Thanks Ken. What threw me was the fact that the passwords were being saved but not the time/date. I tried two other batteries (CR2032 is correct) which I happened to have gathering dust at the back of a drawer and typically they were both dead too. I realised this because I happen to have a second identical system which this problem isn't happening to so I used the battery from that and the issue was fixed - but of course has now transferred itself to the other machine! Off to Sainsbury's...... Thanks again.
6. Hi I have a HP Compaq running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS although I'm sure this is more of a hardware problem than OS-related. Whenever the system if turned off and power cord is removed from the sytem, the date is wiped from the BIOS together with a few other options like whether or not to display F* key details at boot - although boot and maintenance passwords are retained. After replacing the power cord and booting, I have to first press Esc to stop the RAM count, then hit F1 to continue, then after entering the boot password I have to hit F1 again and then finally it'll boot succesfully. If I do hit F10 and have a look at the BIOS, I've lost the date and other settings as mentioned above. If the power cord is not removed at shut down, the above details remain unchanged. I'm hoping it's just a dead CMOS battery but don't have one to test at the moment. So can anyone suggest what else might be the cause if not the battery? Many thanks in advance.
7. If I may, have you tried updating your video drivers? Worth a shot before spending any money. Good luck.
8. If it's of any help, I've come across this in the past and it was due to overheating. It's possible your fan is clogged with dust (even the cleanest houses have it), in which case the CPU may not be getting cooled as efficiently as it should. It may therefor be worth trying to carefully clear the fan and its' vents of any dust. If done properly, the fan and heatsink may start to do their job correctly again, the CPU may not get as hot and intermittent power-offs could cease. Don't blow the dust into the laptop with a can of air - suck the dust out with a vacuum. Like I say, just throwing this out to you, it may well be as suggested by others above. Good luck.
9. Hi all. I have some close friends who have been using a Netgear DGN2000 Router for just over a year. The wireless has started dropping regularly and despite channel changes, firmware updates and repositioning, etc., the problems remain. I'm beginning to think a capacitor or two may have blown as I've read elsewhere with this model. So, I'm going to suggest a new router but am looking for suggestions. I should really steer clear of Netgear since they've not proven too reliable in the past but have found some at Curry's which are reasonably priced (http://alturl.com/fdxmj or http://alturl.com/9dw8s [i cannot see much of a difference in these two other than price]). What would you guys recommend as a replacement? They have two relatively new HP laptops running Win7, both 'N' capable but their HP printer only seems to work with 'B' & 'G'. The laptops are almost always located quite a distance from the router - 1 floor up, approx. 20 ft in a straight line, floor and 1 wall in between (router cannot be moved). Any suggestions appreciated. Many thanks in advance.
