  1. Thanks for you help guys. I followed one of the solutions on the link Seth provided regarding issues after completing XP repairs and it worked. I re-registered the Wups2.dll after stopping the automatic updates and then re-started them and the updates installed correctly. Did a full virus scan with newly installed Norton 08 and it seems, 2 months later, that my pc is finally back to where it was!! This site has been great for all your help so thanks again - with both this and previous hardware failures I'd had! cheers Andy
  2. Hi Seth, thanks for the advice. Unfortunately still no luck with regards the updates, they still continue to fail. I have searched on the internet but seems to be a somewhat random event! I think the last attempt will have to be a call to microsoft and hopefully they'll be able to advise further, unless anyone else has any possible suggestions? Thanks for your help though.. Andy
  3. Hi guys, Following some great advice last time after my motherboard failed and updating my Windows XP I thought I see if anyone could help with a further issue I've found with my pc, I think related to the both of the above. I had to have my old (1 yr old!) motherboard replaced after a fault and I then ran a repair install of XP and everything seemed to be working fine. I've also installed a new HD to to back up all my data. However, I've recently noticed that the windows updates are not installing, in fact none have since I've repaired the pc. They download fine using the MicrosoftUpdate website but then when starting to install they all report a failure message. I'm now upto 94 updates that need to be installed (most are security related) but each time they all download and fail on the installation stage. Does anyone have any idea as to why this may be? I'm assuming its something to do with the repaired windows xp running on the new motherboard although all programs etc seem to be working as normal. I've validated the xp using the microsoft site so and the fact they're down loading the updates seems to suggest it knows my XP is valid but still wont install. If anyone has any advice or knows what the problem could be then help would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance :)
  4. Ok cool, will check the BIOS settings, though didnt realise some sticks are designed to work in pairs. In the process of ordering another module now (maybe two as they seem to be so cheap these days) and finding out about the differences between buffered and non buffered as I go. There seems to be a choice at every step of updating/repairing the PC!!
  5. thanks for all your help, tried the repair installation and everything seemed to go ok. Computer seems a little slow for some reason (lost a RAM module due to breakage) but the remaining 1GB module is only comming up at 898MB? I also noticed that the although the speed of the module is stated as 667Mhz, its max is set to 330? Think I'll have to investigate further. At least its back in operation though so thanks for your comments. Cheers, Andy
  6. Great thanks. The component didnt come with a driver unfortuantely but I'll try downloading a driver for the drive this eve and hopefully that will solve it. If that doesnt work I think I'll just proceed with the repair install anyway. It has already got a legitimate windows on the hardrive, I was just concerned that it might reformat the drive during the repair install (which some people have claimed has happened). Thanks again for both of your help and time, its much appreciated. Will let you know how I get on tomorrow
  7. yeah this it to hook up to the P4 board, from one of the old Dell series pc's. The one I've got plugs into the second ide channel on the board then can attach the SATA drive to it. It lights up fine, my drive's spinning, it just says "unknown device" and then the pc runs as normal. I thought it may be to do with the jumper settings or something. Or maybe I've been sold a dud and you're right, it will only go from IDE to Sata though it claims to go both ways?!
  8. unfortunately its more like this!! http://www.priceco.eu/price_co/pictures/IDE_TO_SATA_Converter/IDE_TO_SATA_Converter_g.jpg
  9. Thanks for that. I've just looked at re-installing windows and have read its possible for Microsoft to give it the thumbs up. The problem however is getting all my old data off my drive. I think I've managed to confuse everyone with what I've written above. Currently I have: PC1 (which has had its motherboard replaced) SATA 250 GB c:\ - configured to the motherboard that failed PC2 (old P4 that has been garaged for ages) this is currently working ok IDE 160 GB c:\ What I've done is bought a SATA-IDE converter so I can take the 250GB, currently configured to the PC1 failed motherboard, and connect this as a slave to PC2. Then I can take off the files I want to keep, then reinstall my Windows XP over the 250GB Sata on PC1 with the new board. PC2 will then have copies of all my backed up data and I can then transfer back PC1 (via external HD) and I'll have my PC1 back to full strength. The issue I'm having is using the 250GB c:\ off PC1 as a slave in PC2. I'm using a IDE-SATA converter to link it to the motherboard but it says "unknown device" on booting up. Therefore I'm unable to get the data off it before re-installing windows on it. Do you know what the issue with this could be? Cheers, Andy
  10. Hi all, I posted a problem on here early last month following an issue with my pc freezing -which turned out to be a faulty on board graphics card as people had suggested. The motherboard has since been replaced by the company responsible for putting the pc together...unfortunately this is not the end of the road with regards getting the pc back up and running.... ..typically I hadnt backed up the main c:\ of the pc for a few months. The c:\ obviously now needs re-configuring to the new motherboard (AS-ROCK VSTA) but in doing so I dont want to lose everything I've stored on there previously. If I can get the old programs to continue to work as before that would be a bonus! I've tried simply plugging in and booting using the c:\ in the hope that it will automatically reconfigure itself and run as normal...which came back with a list of errors regarding the windows configuration. I have read however that using the XP discs I can reinstall windows over the old version and everything else (data/program wise) should remain as it was...but I have also read where this has led to the complete reformat of the c:\ In order to combat any potential loss I powered up my old P4 pc and attempted to connect the c:\ off my newer pc as a slave via an IDE-SATA converter, backup all files from there onto my old pc, so that if it reformats then at least I have all the data/files etc. However this too is causing a problem. The older PC motherboard only has IDE connectors as far as I can tell so I pruchased the SATA-IDE converter. The old P4 now pops up with an "unknown device " message for the additional SATA drive, will proceed to boot up as normal but the extra drive can not be seen or accessed in windows. I'm assuming this is something to do with the jumper settings etc? But I cant be sure. Also, I obviously still want to boot off the original old c:\ (which is set to master) but with the secondary converted IDE-SATA drive having no jumper settings I cant set this as a slave. If anyone could advise, either on the attempts to reconfigure windows on my c:\ with the new motherboard without losing all original files, or on the problem with the IDE/SATA converter using my old PC and getting the SATA c:\ to act as a slave to back up my data I'd be extremely grateful!! Thanks in advance for any help :)....and also for those who helped me out last time!
  11. Hi all, firstly thanks for your help regards my last issue, the problem was infact a faulty onboard graphics card and so the motherboard has been replaced by the company from which the pc was bought.
  12. Tried to clear the BIOS by removing the battery for half an hour then rebooting. Unfortunately now I can't even get a message on screen, the computer has one long beep then two shorter beeps on startup but does nothing and no display can be seen. Anyone know what these beeps could mean? Thanks, Andy
  13. Am afraid not at the moment, only a USB wired Keyboard and the PS2 Wireless. I can however get hold of one temporarily later in the week if that may help, will see how I get on this evening as I wasn't able to get any further last night due to work commitments. Turned on the machine and left it for 30mins this morning in the hope that it was an update related issue but no luck! I also emailed a local repairer yesterday but at over £50 an hour I'm more than willing to try anything and everything before it comes to that!
  14. Hi guys, Thanks very much for the advice, much appreciated. With only having access to the internet at work at the moment I've had to wait until now to check the forum. I disconected all the drives at the weekend, again unplugged the psu and cleaned down. I also replaced the thermal paste on the heat sink but all to no avail. It still stops in exactly the same place, all I can see is the: GeForce 6100SM-M V1.0A 10/16/2006 Main Processor : AM Athlon K2 Dual Core Processor 4200+ and then nothing. I can hear the disks spinning and the CD-ROM lights up and makes a noise but even after disconnecting that and trying again it still remains. I'll try taking out the battery on the Motherboard (and leaving it for 30mins) and attempt the F8 to get into the BIOS. The keyboard I'm using is a wireless one with ps2 connection but have also tried my old usb one in attempt to get in but no lights even show up on load up, it doesnt even get that far. . Failing that I'll try changing the PSU and other hardware parts. I hadnt actually altered anything on the system interms of BIOS etc, I've just been using it as normal. Will changing the BIOS affect anything on my c:\? At the moment I'm convinced that eveything I had on it in terms of important documents/photos etc are still ok but whilst attempting to resolve the issue I dont want to accidently corrupt the hard disk. I have an old c:\ from an old PC that I could use but this has not been used with the current PC. Will let you know how I get on this evening and thanks again :) Cheers, Andy
  15. Hi, I'm new to this Forum but am having serious problems with my PC so thought would see if anyone could help out. Basically my PC freezes after initialising the processor on startup: GeForce 6100SM-M V1.0A 10/16/2006 Main Processor : AM Athlon K2 Dual Core Processor 4200+ Usually it would then run through a list of the drives etc before loading up XP but it freezes after this one line. The Keyboard cant be used and the BIOS not accessed so am a bit stuck. The PC itself is only 9months old, its a AMD 4200 Dual Core, 2GB DDR2 Ram. I've read that it may be the PSU (even though its seemingly ok to fire up the computer), also maybe the CPU or RAM. I've changed the RAM Modules around, tried it with just one etc, cleaned out all the dust and ensured all fans are working but still the issue remains. I've never had a problem with it before, its just all of a sudden. If there was any thing anyone could advise or if anyones had the same problem it would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance Andy
