http://www.windows7hacker.com/index.php/2009/05/how-to-change-user-profile-default-location-in-windows-7/ This link will show you how to change the default profile location within the registry. http://www.intowindows.com/change-default-installation-directory-in-windows-7-vista/ This link will show you how to change the default installation path within the registry. This should answer your inquiries, however you might have to do this for each user individually. -

also: How to ensure the users that install programs are installing it to the 2TB and not the SSD: you can tell them to manually choose the 2TB drive. There may be a way to set the default installation drive, however as i am more proficient with XP and not windows 7's inner workings, i am unsure. For now just tell them to install to the 2TB, and i will research this as well and get back to you with a definitive answer. -

Setting up user accounts to save thier content by default to their home folder: There is a way to do this, however the way i know how to do this involved windows 7 pro and an Active Directory domain with user's default folders being set within Active Directory. On windows 7 home premium i would imagine it is possible to set their default folders, but i am unsure how to do this right now (ill do some research and get back to you on this one.) As for making it so users cannot see the folders of each other: The easiest way to do this is to create a folder which is the user's name. For Example: Chris, John, Bob, Steve, Phil. Of course you can name the folders whatever you like, but the users need to be filled in on which folder is theirs, etc.. The next tep is to log in as an administrator, and deny read/write permissions to the folder, to everyone ecept the administrator account, and the user the folder belongs to. You can do this by right clicking the folder (as the admin) and clicking properties, and going to permissions and adding every user on the machine to the folder, and denying everyone excpt the owner. Once you have done this be sure to apply the changes. This will let everyone see each others folders, but they will be unable to look inside of them. The reason for leaving the administrator account with access to each folder is in the event one of the users messes with the permissions, you can go in and fix it. Optional: If you are comfortable with editing permissions, on each folder deny the user it belongs to the ability to edit permissions, or take ownership of the folder. This will prevent them from completely screwing up the folder's permissions, or going around the permissions by taking ownership of the folder. You do not have to do this to users that have been denied full access, because they already wont be able to edit permissions or view the contents of the folder. -
HDD failure recovery with Acronis ?
isolatedvirus replied to Osprey's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
i am uncertain of the capabilities of acronis (personally ive never used it, and preferred to use clonezilla, and symantec ghost when clonezilla wasnt available.) If it has the same features as most other imaging software, you should be able to clone directl from one HDD to another, without requiring an image to be made. Usually this is done over the network via unicast or multicast traffic. If you cannot perform the image operation this way, then your way will work fine. Once again i am unsure of acronis' features, but it *should* be able to create an image, and drop all unused space from the image. Assuming you have a 500GB HDD, and have only used 120GB, it will create a 120GB image, instead of a 500GB one. -

no problem, just as a bit of info you can download offline patchers for windows. Its a huge download but its worth it as your machine is extremely vulnerable before the patches, and you can disconnect from the network and run the patcher which will actually save you lots of time. Good luck with everything, and best wishes. -
Can't get Internet to work
isolatedvirus replied to whiskey16's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
you can obtain the DNS server information from your roomate's comuters, just ask them to take a look at their information. After you get the DNS servers, you would follow the post above to input the information. -
Netgear WN2000RPT Range Extender PS3
isolatedvirus replied to VikingWizardEyes's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
no, you are not stuck. I believe the issue is with reception. This is how a range extender works: lets say(hypothetically to kep things simple) that your wireless router has a range of 10 feet (its more than that but this is just to explain). if your PS3 is 15 feet away from the router, then your signal will be very weak, or not present at all. Now lets say the range extender has a range of 10 feet as well. If you place the extender 9 feet away from the router it is still within the wireless router's range of communication. and the extender can reach 10 feet in any direction, so effectively your router is now reaching 19 feet. This would enable the PS3 to communicate wirelessly with the router, by piggybacking off of the extender. Now, that being said, if your PS3 gets a bad signal in your bedroom, and the wireless extender needs to connect to the router (wirelessly) in order to extend your internet to your PS3, then your extender is not doing you any good in an area where it has bad signal. All you need to do is move the extender closer to the wireless router, personally i would try moving it a room over, or putting it where it is convienent. Just remember, if the extender is too far away from the router, then it cant do its job and if it is right next to the router, then it is not exending your network very far. Ive checked he online manual for your extener, and it has LED lights on it that will tell you where it is best to place it, i dont know if youve tried that yet, but if its saying to place it in your bedroom with your PS3, then i wouldnt follow what it says. -

Step 5: (Cont'd) Go to Start -> Run and type in CMD. When the command prompt appears type "ipconfig /release" hit enter, wait a couple of seconds and type "ipconfig /renew" hit enter again and this should renew your IP on your LAN. You will most likely receive the exact same IP, but in the off chance this works it will save you time. After you have completed this step, attempt to ping the compter and stream media from it. If it works, then it is possible an IP Conflict was causing the issue. Step 6: Go to control panel (if the connection is wired, unplug the cable for a few seconds and plug it back in before doing this.) and click on the network and sharing center. Go to the network settings and change the network type from Home(Private) to Public. apply the changes and then change the network type back to Home ( Private ). This is in an attempt to see if perhaps a registry issue is the problem, and we are forcing windows to change how it views the network, and write that information in the registry. After you have completed this step, attempt pinging and streaming again. Step 7: While still in the network and sharing center, go through Every option for sharing, and confirm that: File and folder sharing are turned on. Media Sharing is turned on. Password protected sharing is turned on (If you have it off, it just means people can connect to you and view files without having an account on the computer.) Also ensure that windows firewall is turned off, and after you have completed this step, attempt to ping and stream media from the computer. Step 8: Reinstall Avast and attempt to ping and stream media. If it was working after you uninstalled avast, and is now not workin, this confirms that avast i in fact, the trouble maker. If avast has been confirmed and you still wish to use it, you can now begin to configure avast to restore functionality to your network services. Please respond back with as much information as possible for each step performed. If this is not working, and you are positive your other antivirus is completely unintalled (The one you had before avast) then something is indeed broken within your registry. You can either reinstall at this point, or if you wish i can see if i can find the issue by remoting in with team viewer. If you do choose to go the teamviewer route, please note that is is not recommended to let total strangers remote into your comuter, for privacy and security reasons, and that if you do wish to do this you understand the risks involved. I myself will not do this unless you are present at the computer in question the entire time i am assisting you. If for some reason you need to walk away, notify me and i will disconnect, and reconnect when you are present. -

okay, the result of the ping being blocked is indicative of something protecting your computer. It is still unclear if it is avast or windows firewall (my bet is on avast). Sometimes when antivirus software is disabled, it remains active as a firewall, but stops scanning for malware threats. I assisted a gentleman a few days ago that couldnt share his photos over his LAN to the rest of his family. He checked his antivirus but missed an option within it that caused the problem to occur. My point is, sometimes the antivirus software hides its firewall rules deep within itself. Short of remoting in myself to take a look, id like you to do a couple things to test this. The first step is optional, but i highly recommend it due to security reasons. Before you do this you should redownload the installer for avast. Step 1: Unplug your DSL or CABLE modem. (Do not unplug or power off your router, you simply want to turn the internet off while maintaining connectivity within your ousehold between your devices on the LAN) Step 2: Uninstall Avast, and reboot. Step 3: Ping the computer from a different device. If you can now ping the computer, Avast was the culprit in blocking ICMP traffic. Step 4: Attempt to stream using different devices that you would normally use. If this works all of a sudden, Avast is the culprit in blocking either Windows Shares or Media Streaming. Step 5: From this point on, only continue if none of the previous steps have worked.) -

i understand you dont want to leave the avast software with its shields 'disabled', but in order to determine if it is the culprit, you must disable it, and test to see if the devices can connect to your computer for streaming. Once you confirm you can/cant connect with it disabled, you can turn it back on. Another thing to check would be within the logs of the antivirus software, to see if anything on the lan is being blocked. Also, i'd like you to ping your computer from another device, and let me know what the response is. Edit: can you also list what protocols both programs use. If airdroid can access your files but the other program cant, its possible its using a seperate protocol entirely. (And forgive me for asking you to start from the beginning to troubleshoot, i just want to be certain all the steps you performed before have the same result.) -
Dell Vostro 430 upgrade to SSD
isolatedvirus replied to jollyroger's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
If your RAID is configured through the BIOS, you will need to disable it (after backing all of your data up onto an external disk) Once youve saved all of your data, you can begin the upgrade. (Im unfamiliar with your BIOS, so these instructions will be vague, if you need further clarification please let me know so i can be of more assistance. >back up data to External Drive (or whatever you preffer) >Reboot into BIOS, Disable RAID array. >Remove both drives, and install the SSD first. (Do not install the 2TB HDD yet, this is to avoid installing windows accidently onto it) >Install windows, this will take quite some time, as SSD's have slow write speeds. >Once windows is installed, power down and install the 2TB drive. >power on and format the drive. >Enjoy -

ok, a few things you could try. (BTW, thanks for posting what youve tried, this helps tremendously) Ensure that windows recognizes the network as a home or private network, or it will deny access to it via the network (even if youre running services with the intent to share) Double check that you have media sharing enabled, and that your media libraries are properly configured to allow access (Sometimes folder permissions prevent sharing) Check your antivirus software (usually within the firewall settings) for anything that may be affecting (blocking) the communication. You an first try this by disabling the software completely, trying to connect to it with your PS3 and verifying it is working/not working. I believe that the problem lies within the antivirus software, because you are saying that services (like media monkey) are not working, and that the device can see other network devices. -

Is your extender located in the room that has bad wireless reception? If so, try placing the wireless range extender on the other side of the wall, closer to the wireless router you have. Experiment with different locations within your home to find the best result. If signal isnt the culprit of causing your issue (if youve already tried this and it hasnt worked) it could be an issue with the firewall or DMZ settings on your router. From personal experience i was unable to play battlefield 3 online while i had a DMZ configured on my firewall, and port forwarding set up. I had to restore the firewall to defaults, and only add the port forwarding (the DMZ for some reason wasnt playing nice with the battlefield 3 servers). If you continue to have issues even after moving the extender let me know, and we can start troubleshooting firewall issues and entering port forwarding rules. -
am i mistaken or are you trying to connect two seperate ISPs through two different routers into one connection?
