95 thinks all cd's are Audio CD's
omega_shadow replied to omega_shadow's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
First thing I checked when I got this thing. It does work but it involves 50 Floopys :O It works ok as it is for a text editor. If I want anything more I will just have to break down and buy an up to date brick-I mean laptop. Thanx for the input guys -

DSL = Damn Small Linux. I would be removing windows and installing a lightweight linux distro. But without a CD drive and no usb ports, installation would be nearly impossible -
Just how stupid can some people be?

Nope, no go. Uninstalling and restarting does bupkis. I would be interested to try and install DSL if I was sure it would work after I was done :p -

never got that far. As I said, this thing is a glorified Text Editor. Will try that later today when I finish my work on the websites. -

afraid not. This one is an ?internal? Whatever you want to call it when you switch it out for a floppy. Just pulled it out. Model No. ujdcd6731 by Kyushu Matsushita Electric. AKA, No name brand lmfao Yeah, I hear ya RL. I have not seen this kinda problem in ages! For the life of me I still cant remember what caused it. Direct-CD doesnt jog any memorys. EDIT: This laptop looked out of place on my desk till I put my old PalmIII next to it and spread some old 1.44 floppys around. Now it just looks like I went back in time LMFAO! -

If I remember correctly, autoplay was not introduced till.... 98SE? Someone Correct me on that. But back to the issue, I think it might have something to do with drivers. When you go to My Computer and check the cd-rom after you put, lets say, the windows 95 oem disk in you will see that it comes up as an audio cd actually displays audio tracks (cda format) dispite the fact that it is in reality a data cd Once again, don't rack your brain on this one. It displays text files and thats all it needs to do for now. Just curiosity on my part. -
I have aquired a VERY old POS laptop (sharp-9050) with windows 95 installed. Just fooling around with it, I found that the CD Rom thinks everything put into it, including the windows 95 cd, is an audio cd. I remember having this issue a LONG time ago when I first started working with computers, but can not seem to remember the solution. Don't stress yourself out trying to figure this out. This laptop is going to be a glorified text reader till I can fix my LifeDrive and possibley get a laptop from this decade

Shortly after I posted that I went back and edited in my rant. Nothing chicken here unless you count the buffalo wings I am muching on :P

wow, I would put in my 2 cents, but everything has already been said on the subject. Self taught over here. My teachers wanted to fail me every step of the way because I challenged their "read from book, hand out ditto" curriculum. Had to teach myself everything I know, So I don't have a lot of faith in the public education system. On second thought, I can't pass up a good rant. :P Public School is bad, Collage is worse and you actually have to pay for it. Public schools teach you not to question the information fed to you and to conform. Collage teaches you to waste money. And people wonder why the economy is in such shambles right now.... A good example of how out of whack the education system is in this day and age can be given simply looking at my friend and I. My Friend, Honor Student in k-12, Has roughly the same position I have. We manage networks and servers and websites and etc. We keep the technology running that keeps our respective companies running. However, one of us is always looking for a job, one of us is not. My friend went to collage for four years taking various classes. He goes to work in a suit and answers his superiors with "yes sir". When he doesn't not know the solution to a problem, he hires someone to take care of it for him. I went to collage for about two months before I told them where to shove it. I work in t-shirts and bluejeans and answer my superiors in the form of "what are you smoking?". When I don't know the solution to a problem, I take a book off the shelf, read up on it and experiment till I figure it out. Out of the two of us, I am the only one that can hold down a job. You know why? His education in school told him how to act. My Education in hard knocks taught me how to survive. That is what is wrong with education today. Instead of preparing kids to be ready when there isn't anyone there to give them the answers, the education system prepares them to blindly accept what has been given to them. I will rant more later, I got to do a server backup then get home

runing sfc now. I use linux 97.4% of the time anyways. I just wanted my trips into windows to be less... aggravating? I think that is the word? I just got everything installed and set up again on this system after I formatted it less then a month ago. I will just do my searches in linux *shrug* Thanx for trying though. I got to thinking, I was a dick to you earlier. Consider this a little "thank you" for being the better man and not banning me when you saw this post I noticed you don't have a banner for your site. I threw this together real fast with gimp, more like a proof of concept. If you like it, use it. If not let me know what you want and I will make it for you. http://www.outpostpaintball.com/pchelpbanner.jpg -

Common mistake. Should have been more clear in my posts. The only one I have not tried is disabling the indexing. Will try that now. Come to think about it, with....oh your god, 5 physical drives, (split into about 10 partitions) 3 large flash drives and various other storeage devices I hook to this thing, indexing would be a problem. Don't know why I didn't think of that before? Going to take a while to turn indexing off on all the drives I got. Will get back with you to let you know if it works
