Thanks for the welcome. After some googling it seems the stock wireless card, Atheros, is pretty terrible. I tried all of the above steps but to no avail. I downloaded the Intel driver update utility and updated the drivers again via this link http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/detect/wireless and it now seems to be working fine so far.
