Nev, thank you very much for taking the time to help. unfortunately the Fix It troubleshooter didn't help and reports that it cannot read the media in the drive - even though i've tried a couple of cds. now i seem to be stuck on an endless loop at the troubleshooting page where it keeps wanting me to run the diagnostic!! any ideas?? /mark

hi, and thanks in advance for anyone who takes the time to help. I was burning audio cd's with Nero when the program creashed for some reason. Since that time, my Cd/Dvd drive has stopped reading data or audio cd's. The device manager reports that the drive is working properly, but when i insert a disk explorer will often not respond or when it does it shows the drive to be empty I'm running Windows XP Home ed, SP3. Any tips gratefully recieved!!! /mark
