USB Flash Drive wont open up some files on another PC

Hi Ken, how remiss of me, I am so sorry, yes I did get your pm. I will mail you asap, but have been so busy today, I haven't even been able to finish off my coffee. I have no problem sending you the page with hyper-links, but the document to which it is attached it somewhat large, with images of Birth, Marriage and Death Indexes & Census forms that opens with Windows Live Photo Gallery. And yes, before you ask, my friend does have that on his laptop, and also on mine. I may have to just re-jig the document in question and make it much smaller in order to send it to you. Sue -

Hi Nev, nice to speak to you, and I am sorry I have been so long in replying, but have had a lot of housework and other things to do. The hyper-links are to other internal documents on the flash drive. The Microsoft Office Word box that appears on screen shows and amber triangle with a exclamation mark within and states "Cannot open the specified file" and underneath that a click box with "OK" in it; yet other internal hyper-links on the same page work fine. This only appears to be a problem on a lap-top pc, the links all work OK when using a desktop pc. I actually tried opening the links on my lap-top and and was experienced the same problems as my friend, the majority of links DO open, but some just don't want to know. I really do apologise for taking up so much of your time. I thought I was pretty savvy on my computer knowledge, but this one has got me stumped Thanks Sue -

I can certainly send you one of the documents with a hyper-link to an internal site. The external links work fine. Can't exactly remember what the box did say, although I don't think it was an Error Box, 'cos it didn't give an Error Number, it just said something like "can't open this" and a Yes and No box. with "Was this useful?" underneath. If you would like to send me your e-mail address, I would be more than happy to provide you with one of the documents concerned and I guess you will also need the document to which the hyper-link goes to. USB Flash Drive wont open up some files on another PC

Hi again Ken, sorry I haven't replied earlier, busy cooking the tea, and then husband on the pc, he's now watching "Being Liverpool" and I'm allowed on my computer again!!!! I fully understand your misunderstanding of my first post, I guess it was a bit complicated. I don't send him a document with hyper-links in, the hyper-links are on the flash drive which I put into my friends' laptop and tried opening some of the internal hyper-links, and as I said the majority of them work, it's just some of them don't want to open up, and I think an error box came up which gave a yes or no option, both of which I tried but still couldn't open up all those hyper-links. I brought the Flash Drive back to my PC and they all opened up first time, and Iv'e never known this happen before. I am pretty sure he is operating MSWord 2010, but I do know he does sometimes fiddle around with his pc and doesn't really know what he is doing!!! so perhaps he may have done something that he is unaware of. I even tried putting my back-up master flash drive with all the same info on as the other one, and I still had the same problem on his laptop, but it opens every hyper-link on my pc. I would be extremely grateful if you are able to help me, as I said I've never come across this before. Cheers Sue PS: Of course I will let Starbuck know, he's probably just jealous of your dynamic personality and winning ways!!!! Is that enough creeping for one day, 'cos I'm knackered now! -
USB Flash Drive wont open up some files on another PC
suew203 replied to suew203's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi Ken, thank you for that, and as usual I have made a note of it. The bit I cant get my head around is why on his pc it opens up the majority of the internal hyper-links, but just refuses point blank on others on his pc and as far as I am aware he also uses MSWord 2010. I have only used one PC to do all the work on, so can't understand why this is happening, and as I said all hyper-links work on mine. Any more thoughts? Did I mention how wonderful you are? Sue -
Hello everyone, sorry it is me again, this time the problem is as above. Just finished putting the finishing touches to a family tree on the flash drive, which has hyper-links to other (internal) documents. Works fine on my PC and opens these hyper-links every time, but just tried it on my friends pc, and the same hyper-link wont open. At top of his screen it says Microsoft Word (non-commercial), could it be that he is using a different MSWord system from mine which is MSWord Starter 2010, or is it just a glich in the system? Any ideas or solutions gratefully accepted Sue:confused: PS either my typing is too fast or is the site having probs?

SAVING ITEMS ON A USB FLASH DRIVE
suew203 replied to suew203's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi again Ken, I'm not sure if I perhaps explained myself clearly with my question about the flash drive, and I thought I had better clarify it. I have put all the family tree information on the USB Flash Drive. It is now going to be given to the person who it belongs to. How do I save all my hard work & data on the flash drive, so that it is not removed by its new owner by mistake? Or do I just follow the instructions you very kindly provided the other day? Thank you very much for all your help Kind Regards Sue :) -

Hello everyone, I have now put everything that I want on my USB Flash Drive, and want to save it in order that it cannot be tampered with by other users. Can anyone help me Thanks Sue
-
Ken, my thanks to you yet again for getting back to me. I have again printed off the info suggested, and once I have read it (several times) and inwardly digested it I will attempt yet again to make these blooming damned hyperlinks work for me. I really appreciate all the assistance you have offered and I will let you know if this works, but it might not be today, I think I've just about tired out those little grey cells for now. With warmest regards and my thanks once again Sue:ranger:

Uuummm, not quite solved I'm afraid. Have been tyring just one hyperlink in my document to see if it works, but it doesn't. Have done all the actions to make the link and burned it to CD, but when I open up the CD and select the document I want it still won't open up the hyperlink. I must be missing something somewhere, but I am at a loss to know what. My brain is almost frazzled now!!!! Sorry Ken, I thought this would be easy. Sue
