  1. Hi. Long time no see. Got this message ~ "Windows has detected an IP address conflict ~ Another computer on this network has the same IP address as this computer. windows system event log . . etc" (Me dummy. Event log = chinese.) ~ I am in a public area, using the library wifi. Security breach? Can anyone see what I am doing? Not really bothered, Doing nothing illegal. Just curious. I do have another PC. Same make & model. Dell. Same Win7. But not being used at the moment. And not here. And it surely has a different IP.? Just ignore it? Thank you in advance. Signart
  2. Current user (Dell\admin) 'You do not have . . . ' So > Control panel > Admin tools > Local security policy ¬ and 4th down, renamed the Admin account to 'AAA' Then to the system restore panel, choose the 'Admin' box, and type in the password I use when I log in. (I have to put in the Admin password AND the HDD password ¬ which I have recently changed, as above ¬ and later the password for my account ( Tom\ admin.) and it says ¬ 'Log in failure. Unknown user name or bad password' !!! Is the real admin some sort of ghost ?? How can I get back to absolute basics . . . That's why I wanted to delete the 'Tom\Dell\admin account. System restore maybe could have solved another ongoing problem ¬ battery not charging. Thank you for your patience.
  3. Hi! ¬ Thank You. When I went to System Restore, for instance, using my account ¬ which SAYS I am the Admin ¬ access is denied. So I try the 'Admin' box underneath, and type in the new Admin password I created in F12 ¬ and it does not recognise the password. Yet I use that password to get in when I log on.
  4. Hi! ¬ Same prob as the Guy below. So > F12 > changed Admin password ( and HD password ) > back to factory default. Now I have to put in both passwords to enter. OK. Happy with that. Now can I delete the account that is in my name? Then no conflict between accounts. . Then, being the Admin, I can go anywhere . . .?? No one can get in because they need the initial Admin password. ( ?? )
  5. Hi. Done all the right things and still no joy. Regedit > Local machine > system > current control set > control > storage device policies > ( 2 items. one is default. the other is write protect. In the latter, I change value from ¨1¨ to ¨0¨. Take usb out, and re insert it. It is STILL write protected. ??? (Bought it new, assuming it was ´¨free access¨ Half way through transferring files to it, it stopped, and said ¨write protected¨. I lost half my files.
  6. Nev and Bob - Thank you very much! One does not KNOW if an XP is illegal when the PC is purchased. Just by the by, the font question is the only hiccup. Fonts that I download from the web and install, CAN be erased. Thanks again.
  7. Bob Just noticed I can download a free XP http://www.ehow.com/search.html?s=Windows+XP+Free+Download&skin=tech&t=all&rs=1 Is that a simple process - like simply erasing everything, then downloading it? And is it really free? Like hidden catches later . . . Thank you.
  8. Bob, Thank you for your input.
  9. Bob Thank you. Makes sense. Sent a query off to Microsoft answers also. Reply sounds a little haughty. Can they do anything?
  10. permission The 30 days I have now extended. This is not the first password I use to get in, because otherwise I could not get in. Its been the same for ages. Admin tools > Local security policy > Security settings > Password policy > maximum password age. (I do not know which password this means) ....................... Only one account. (Ah! Maybe 2 . .)There are traces of Egyptian language from the previous owner which I would like to get rid of, but that later. ......................... Yes I am able to download programs. Also automatic updates from AVG. Microsoft windows, Libre office, etc. .............................. Font message also says cannot delete cos "write protected" (or no permission.) I know there are fonts you are not supposed to delete. They are noted. Perhaps if I go back to the shop, but, with repect, I know they will charge me.
  11. Hi. I set the password! "OKC" is the clue I gave myself, and noted, as to the new password. ( Is it "OKConstant" "OKCHarlie" or reversed "CharlieOK" etc etc . . No. ) So. Simpler to change the password. Do emphasise - It is my laptop. Bought it 2nd hand. Dell D 420. XP Proff. 199 euros. I have the receipt. Send you a photocopy? ok. You can check with the shop. If I was a wizard, I would be there by now . . Regards Tom.
  12. New here - "Signart" - Windows XP Prof. - I have the password to log on and get in - but when I tried to delete some fonts, it said I needed permission. Administrators, I presume. So I go to Local security policy, then security options and then I get lost. What DOES one do? I got a "OKC" as a clue, but that does not help, and also it says the admin password is only good for 30 days.
