total system freeze
alexsurridge replied to alexsurridge's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
hi, so i tried the modules one at a time in each slot and maxed the cpu usage on all of them, one of them froze in one slot but not the other and the other one was fine in both. so i have put them both back in (making sure the one that froze is in the correct slot) when i tried both with max cpu usage it worked fine for 20mins then it just restarted the system but it didn't freeze. here is the event log - System - Provider EventLog - EventID 6008 32768 Level 2 Task 0 Keywords 0x80000000000000 - TimeCreated 2012-12-15T11:47:04.000Z EventRecordID 28983 Channel System Computer home-PC Security - EventData 11:45:01 15/12/2012 561 DC070C0006000F000B002D0001002600DC070C0006000F000B002D0001002600600900003C000000010000006009000000000000B00400000100000000000000 Binary data: In Words 0000: 000C07DC 000F0006 002D000B 00260001 0008: 000C07DC 000F0006 002D000B 00260001 0010: 00000960 0000003C 00000001 00000960 0018: 00000000 000004B0 00000001 00000000 In Bytes 0000: DC 07 0C 00 06 00 0F 00 Ü....... 0008: 0B 00 2D 00 01 00 26 00 ..-...&. 0010: DC 07 0C 00 06 00 0F 00 Ü....... 0018: 0B 00 2D 00 01 00 26 00 ..-...&. 0020: 60 09 00 00 3C 00 00 00 `...<... 0028: 01 00 00 00 60 09 00 00 ....`... 0030: 00 00 00 00 B0 04 00 00 ....°... 0038: 01 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ........ i hope someone can decipher these logs thanks alex -

hi ken, i did take one of the ram out and watched a 50min video, quality still not great but it didn't freeze i will try the same module in the other slot tomorrow and check the results, then do the same with the second module i will let you know the results. i'm still not sure what it means because the pc didn't freeze every time but i will persue with the ram experiment. the old ram was in a bad way when i took them out, i think they were causing all the bsod errors. i shall report back thanks alex -

hi ken, it is not a standard pc, it was built by pcspecialist.co.uk in 2007 the psu is power rebel model: RB450ATX-P so i am assuming that means it is 450w? but i don't really know. is there anything other than psu that corses this sort of problem? thanks alex -
hi guys, i've started a new thread on this one because we have cured the bsod errors, but now it just totally freezes. okay lets start with speccy: Operating System Microsoft Windows Vista Home Basic 32-bit SP2 CPU Intel Pentium D 820 SmithField 90nm Technology RAM 4.00 GB Single-Channel DDR2 @ 333MHz (5-5-5-15) Motherboard ASUSTeK Computer INC. okay i thought i'd just update you on my progress, i haven't updated the bios. i have now installed my new ssd (which hasn't actually speeded the system up at all) and i did change the raid settings to ahci (but i am unsure what it does) i have installed my new graphics card asus hd 6450 1gb ddr3 i have changed monitor to pc conection from dsub to hdmi and STILL the livestream and catch up video quality is jittery and lagging!! i feel like i must have the wrong settings somewhere along the line. monitor is set to 1920x1080 and all the drivers are up to date. oh and my internet connection averages at 7mbps which i would have thought should be fine to livestream (atleast it always used to be) so the original bsod problem is solved but i still have a problem of the system freezing on me from time to time. (genraly when i'm watching videos) any advice would be greatfully received. thanks alex

sorry for sounding dumb, but how do you disable defrag? and i'm also going to update my bios before installing new ssd, can this be done by using a usb stick? on the tutorials i've read they all use floppy, but i don't have a floppy drive. i just want to check with you guys that i'm downloading the right bios (as i've never done this before) this is from the asus website. http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_775/P5VD2VM/#download oh and also should i swap to ahci not raid? i'm not sure what it means but it seems to be the done thing. thanks again, i'm learning all the time and really appreciate your help and advice. thanks alex

hi armageddon and nev, thanks for your help, i went "ott" and bought CT128V4SSD2 128GB Crucial v4 SATA 3Gb/s 2.5-inch SSD (SATA II) on this computer i'm actually using vista and i want to keep my options open for windows 7/8 for 60quid delivered it sounds like a bargain. just hope its as easy to fit as every1 says. thank you alex

okay, so i have fitted the new ram, which at the moment (early days) seems to have cleard the stop errors. thankyou i have a couple more questions if it is okay to ask in this thread? i think i'm going to go for an ssd as the pc has been bashed about a bit and its still a bit slow. i'm just not 100% sure if i'm making the right choice this is what crucial said http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/mpartspecs.aspx?mtbpoid=C707AD7CA5CA7304 do you think 32gb is big enough? we only use the pc for internet streaming and casual gaming (nothing really) and don't really store any big files either. after it is installed i can get rid of the old noisy hard drive? thanks again alex

hi armageddon, yes i have run the crucial scanner and on you're advice i have purchased a new pair of ram (2x 2GB) they should arrive tommorowish, should i run memtest again after i install them? so i'm thinking of putting a new hard drive in aswell, i have been reading about ssd and that sounds better than hard drives, would you recomend an ssd? also i need to replace the graphics card, can i install ddr3 even though my ram is ddr2? thanks for everyones advice alex

right, i left memtest running for 47hours. i'm not really sure if it worked properly. the bottom half of the screen was all in red. i took a photo but can't find the cable to upload! so what are we looking for? pentium D (0.09) 2800 MHz L1 cache: 16K 17720 MB/s L2 cache: 1024K 15641 MB/s L3 cache: NONE memory: 2047M 2241MB/s chipset: pass 1% test 3% test *3 (moving inversions, 8 bit pattern) testing: 184K - 2047M 2047M pattern: 80808080 walltime: 47:45:36 cached: 2047M RsvdMem: 12K MemMap: e820 cache: on ECC: off test: std Pass: 0 Errors: 193875712 ECC Errs: 0 by the way there is 2 sticks of ram installed. thankyou for all your advice alex

hi, i finally managed to get it to boot from usb, so its still doing the memtest, i have had it running for nearly 24hours and its still only 66% should the bottom half of the screen be red? and scrolling? how long should i leave it on? thanks alex

hi blue, sorry if i'm being a bit thick but i really can't get the ram test to boot. first i tried by cd rom but it wasn't having it (even with cd rom as 1st priority boot) so i then tried usb the E: usb says it is bootable or it actually says multiboot but when i restart it just boots as normal. I feel like I haven't got the bios in the right settings. i have " ASUSTeK award P5VD2-VM" and its confusing me do you have any suggestions? thanks alex
