  1. Hi, I stupidly took off all of my nvidia drivers as I was putting in a ATi graphics card...but this is has taken out my sound. Vista is unable to re-install the drivers for the above device, which I think is why I have no sound. My mother board is a ASUS M2N which is a nvidia nforce 430 chip set...so thats why I am guessing I have taken out the required drivers. I have put the asus motherboard cd in the cd rom and installed the drivers again from the disk but no luck. I have removed the creative sound card from the computer in case that was interfering. I just dont know what to do now...all of the obivous things I have tried. Thanks for any help in advance. Bryce
  2. Hi, My graphics card has just died and I am looking for a replacement...and a little overwhelmed with the choice of graphics cards out there. Current (dead) card: Palit 8600 GTS PCI-E 512MB DDR3 HDMI DVI Im looking at new cards and they have PCI 2.0, can i use these? Or do i have to stick to the standard PCI-E cards? Can I just pick the best card in my price range and just go for it? Or will it not be compatible with the advances in technology since i bought this one? Any advice is greatfully recieved. Thanks, Bryce
  3. Yep, I think its stuffed. Thanks for your time and advice. Cheers,
  4. those options are greyed out, have taken out the hd and put back in. no change. I found a section in the bios which enables booting from cd rom so enabled that, now its loading from the boot disk, but stalls on the loading page with the sliding bar with the microsoft corp underneath it.
  5. Just tried using a vista home premium disk in the hope it would be a boot disk, the cd rom made some noises but still came up with the same non-disk error.
  6. Hi, HP Compaq nx 7400 is the make and model. The HDD light comes on (but doesnt flicker or make a noise) and remains lit while its asking for the non-disk error. It goes off after 30 secs or so. Need to hunt down a windows disk to try and use that to boot it. Thanks for your time so far! hang in there
  7. it looks like all of the bios functions relating to the harddrive are greyed out... i.e. disk sanitiser drivelock passwords hdd self-test options Which suggests it is not seeing it. Anything I can do?
  8. Hi, Could you tell me what I am looking for? Thanks,
  9. Hi, I cannot start my laptop it says non-system disk or disk error replace and strike any key when ready. There is no disk in the cd rom, no usb attached and no floppy drive. I have gone into the boot sequence and made the hard drive the first boot priority in case the cd rom isnt working correctly. Still get the same error. I have run the ram check under the bios menu and the ram is fine. The hardrive checker was greyed out so cannot check that. I suspect the harddrive is corrupted, but how can prove this? Thanks,
  10. Hi, I did as you said and the computer boots up with the old HDD. I also set it to slave and it did the same thing. Is there something else I need to do to stop it booting...as I just want it to use it as a spare space. Thanks, Bryce
  11. I have just the one cd/cvd drive and one hdd. looks like the new hdd is plugged in with 2x very short plugs approx (20mm across). one looks like a powermulti colored cable and the other is solid pink that goes into the board. A 20 pin flat cable comes from the motherboard to the cd/dvd and has a black plug....in the middle is a grey 20 pin across plug that is not conneced to anyting. This helping? :)
  12. Hi, I want to put an old hardrive into a new computer and need some help with the jumper settings. I have plugged the short power cable (does it matter which one I use?) and I found a long plug coming from the back of the dvd drive. I plugged these in and it didnt boot up, so quickly turned it off and unplugged it...feeling like a novice and thought that was a bit stupid. I think I need some help to do this properly. The jumpers on the old hardrive are set to device 0 master. Do I need device 0 slave or device 1 slave...?? Any help welcome. Thanks, Bryce
  13. Hi, Restore did the trick thanks! For anybody with the same problem, restore right back to the very first of three update restore points. Also, lost mouse on restart, but another restart fixed that. For restore help go here... Windows Vista Ultimate - System Restore from CD or DVD Thanks for your help! Bryce
  14. Hi Wolfeymole, Well, I held down F8 during startup and told it to boot with the Harddrive. Still loads up as normal. I was expecting a basic setup, but all drivers loaded as usual. Weird! Regards, Bryce
