  1. Hi again I seem to have many problems suddenly! I was trying to connect to wifi on my Kindle using a Cosmote (as I am presently in Greece) Internet On The Go pocket Wifi. All was fine until I stupidly clicked on 'settings' in the Kindle menu and had a look at the Wifi connection when it didn't work one day. In settings, the wifi had been set to 'ignore' or some similar word, which I assume meant automatic connection when on which is how it was previously working. But it now won't give me that choice back and only shows 'connect'. I cannot connect it seems without a password now I have lost the 'ignore' choice. The shop where I bought the router says they know of no password only the wifi key - that doesn't work btw. With me so far? The guy at Amazon chat wrote to go to: 'network & sharing centre' and click on properties on something where I would be able to unhide the wifi password and so connect the Kindle to using the password. Then I lost the chat connection before I could write down their instructions! As they didn't seem that sure, I thought I'd rather ask you guys instead. I think my wifi is called Local Area Network Connection 2 as that came up when I switched the wifi on (small black box, big as a small mobile) Tried to look at all sorts under that heading but can't see anything that allows me to mess with passwords! Haven't touched anything as dare not in case I stop it altogether. Hope someone can help - it's not so much a Kindle questions as a wifi change of password question in network sharing so I hope someone can... cheers all greko
  2. Samsung prob Do I reply here? hope so - thank you Starbuck - sounds very technical but will try, may be a while before i get back to you as I am scared to do this on my own. cheers and thanks again (I'm sure it said 5 replies btw but only found yours) cheers greko
  3. OK, I do accept that - in that case what can I do about the slowness? Every laptop, PC and now this Notebook I buy starts off great then within 6 months to a year, I can almost go make a coffee waiting for them to start up. I sit timing the seconds from clicking an e-mail to it actually opening, usually at least 5-7 secs! I hear people moaning about Broadband speeds and it makes me smile... cheers and thanks to both of you for your replies greko
  4. Thanks a lot, it was still chronically slow before Rapport but I will delete it and see if it flies - would be wonderful..... cheers!
  5. Hi folks. Hope someone can advise a 64 year old who used to be good with computers but way behind now! I have a Samsun Notebook which runs windows 7 starter. It has become unbelievably slow now and I think it is due to the anything up to 46 updates it insists on downloading at the end of each internet usage. Now whilst I am happy to keep my ESET up to date and Rapport, I have no idea what all the other ones are that start downloading as soon as I try to close down. Even though I tried unplugging the Notebook, when I next switched on, yes it continued to obstinately keep up dating. Also tried ctrl alt del to see if that would stop it but no, not even that. Someone told me you don't need all the samsung and windows updates but I don't know how to stop them and which I really need - any ideas? cheers all greko
  6. Hi All I hope this reply goes to everyone who has kindly taken the trouble to reply. THANK YOU all very much, your advice is much appreciated and I will certainly think twice about this, let's hope it doesn't crop up eh. I have decided anyway not to save anything sensitive on my PC, like accounts and personal letters, to keep all that on my separate hard drive. That way I shouldn't need to worry so much - she said hopefully... Thanks again greko
  7. Hi folks Have just bought a new PC from a guy who runs his business from home out here in Greece. He comes well recommended by others, both business and home users and my hubby and I met him to discuss our needs over coffee first. We found him to be a decent guy, very straight forward, professional and saw nothing in the least bit 'shifty' about him !! Whilst chatting I asked about ongoing support and asked him "can you get into the PC whilst we're on the phone so you can see exactly what I am talking about if I have a problem?" To this he said "yes, I can control it - you will see I can move the mouse!" OK, first I thought that's great, at least I will have proper support now (Microsoft never answer any queries) BUT we've all seen 'The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo' !! ;) ;) so my question is - if he can access my PC, does that mean he can also look into my business accounts in Excel files stored on there, my photos, personal letters in Word etc? I suppose what I am concerned with, what if he wasn't genuine, could he in fact clone my ID in any way?? I appreciate that hotmail, my banking etc has password protection - which I assume he couldn't access (??) - but I wouldn't like anyone to be able to browse through our personal stuff anyway, it would be like being burgled!!! Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean there's nobody out to get me..... Any advice much appreciated... cheers Mrs greko
  8. Hurrah!!! Dowloaded the J510a version and it worked, Such a relief, now I can manage til we get back to the UK HUGE THANKU again cheers greko
  9. OK, thought I might do that, worth a try!! THANKU again for at your help. cheers
  10. Hi, BIG thanku for such good help and such a fast reply! OK, have got all you mention except the exact printer type. It only says HP2050A All-in-one J510 Series on the paperwork and on the back of the printer, no 'a' or 'c' is shown anywhere I use Windows 7 Starter on it and it says it is 32-bit. Does this mean I still can't get the driver? You have also kindly answered my other post about my clicking harddrive on my laptop so you will know this is a desperate attempt to manage with the Netbook and printer til I can get the laptop back to the UK in Spring! If I can't print I will have to buy another PC here in Greece as printing is essential to our business. in hopes again, Greko (Mrs)
  11. THANKU for responding. It doesn't look like I have the recovery disks, I found two DVDs but I think they are blank as it says on the paperwork that I was supposed to make my own back up disks and I assume they popped these in for me to use. Of course I didn't, anything techy scares me to death so I suppose I've stupidly gone along hoping for the best. Also, I didn't think you could replace anything in laptops, only PCs... see what I know! I wouldn't dare open it anyway so probably best I, yet again, buy a new one. Will be a PC this time though, might last a bit longer! Happily I have always backed up my files and pics etc to an external hard drive. So at least that isn't a worry, just the cost of a new PC and all the bits you have to buy extra. BTW I'm writing this on a Netbook I bought to use whilst travelling to and from Greece. Just hoping it will stand in til Spring when we go back to the UK! Will take laptop into a couple of guys I used to work with who started their own computer business, if anyone can save it, they will. BIG thanks for confirming though and for offering alternatives, just don't think I'm up to doing any 'repairs' myself. cheers Greko
  12. Hiya, newbie here, pleased to meet y'all ! Can anyone advise please? When switching on my Hewlit Packard laptop it suddenly won’t launch Windows. I get the black screen saying Windows didn’t start successfully and I should either let it count down and start or click on ‘start Windows normally’ Now last time it closed it was as normal, I closed it down and it did its usual procedure and there was no forcing it off etc. I’ve left it trying over and again but it will not launch Windows and just keeps repeating the whole thing. One thing, when it shows the blue Windows XP screen, it clicks a little as it tries to launch just before dropping back to the black screen. Am I right in thinking these laptops have a built-in obsolescence as this seems to happen every couple of years to whatever brand I buy? Am I yet again forced to just dump it and buy yet another or can anyone tell me exactly what caused this and how it can be repaired? I ask as I’m in Greece and can take it to a shop that claims to repair computers but I would like to see if they diagnose the same or just say I need a new one!! PS Not a tiny bit bit techy so please reply in simple terms if you can help. In hopes and with good wishes - greko
  13. Hi folks Newbie here and a bit of a silver surfer too though it pains me to admit it. :-) OK, I have a question too: Been trying to get my Samsung Netbook NC Series to print through my HP 2050A printer. So far got something downloaded which went wrong and lost it, was supposed to be a driver I think. Then I found that the printer had been recognised by plugging it in and was sitting there on the list of printers (Netbook default tick was on one called OneNote2010 but can't find anything about this printer even if I wanted to buy another one, which I don't!) So tried to send a Word doc to the HP 2050A. It said there was a problem and then it went online and tried to troubleshoot it so I was feeling pretty pleased it would find the driver and download it properly - Nah... said it couldn't find a driver. Tried running Live update as it suggested but no luck there either. Now that's my limit, only got that far as the screen was telling what to do!! I am no geek and don't understand geeky talk so please be kind and speak in simple terms eh? :-D Hoping someone will take pity..... cheers all greko
