  1. Hi again KenB, I took out my laptop hard drive and connected it via usb to another pc. I had to "install new hardware" through the control panel before the extra drive showed in "My computer". I couldn't open it or check it's properties without causing "My computer" to stop responding, but eventually got "chkdsk F: /r" to run. It was slow to start, showing only a black page with a flashing cursor at the top. I couldn't enter any commands, but soon the page told me that it was checking the drive. It took perhaps an hour to run through it's checks, but after I could open it through "My computer". I couldn't access "My Documents" but assumed that was because I wasn't signed on as administrator. The drive is now refitted to the laptop(which I'm sending this message from) and appears to be working perfectly. Many thanks for your advice, without it I would have been forced to the costly local repair shop, as I'd tried all I knew and didn't have the confidence to do what you recommended without guidance.. You really have made my day, a donation will follow on my next payday ! Thank You KenB Wishing you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year !!!! Dan
  2. Hi KenB, thanks for responding to my query so quickly. I followed the instructions in your link, but after step 3 the page showed E: Partition 1 <Inactive O/S/2 Boot man 7993MB C: Partition 2 (Unknown) 49230MB Unpartitioned space 8MB pressing r to repair any of these partitionsdid nothing, when I pressed Enter with E selected message read "windows cannot install on this partition". If I select C the next screen tells me that the partition is too full or damaged so must be formatted before installation. This is my laptop, so am unsure on removing the hard drive though Ido have the connecting cables and another pc. I can only use the command prompt after booting from cd, I cannot access safe mode using my laptops O/S. Thanks for your help, it is much appreciated. Dan.
  3. I use a Packard-Bell MV 35-202 with xp pro and 1GB ram. I suffered a power failure whilst installing windows updates. Now I get the bluescreen of death with error code 0x869563DO. I have booted from an xp cd but safe mode or last known good config still get a blue screen. I have tried recovery console using chkdsk /r and bootfix but stillget blue screen.Anyhelp out there ?:(
