  1. Also from the same menu i have been able to get into eMachines recovery management, however it will not let me choose 'restore to factory default' option
  2. Ok, forget that, just found this:- [h=3]Bug Description[/h]Trying to check the memory at newly bought notebook I found a bug in the memtest86+ version 4.20 in ubuntu 12.10, in ubuntu 12.04 it is ok. The bug is reported at least in Fedora and Opensuse. It is assumed that the bug is caused by the gcc-4.7. It is easily reproducible - select the test #7 in memtest or just wait till it - starting from the 129Mb it will report a lot of errors. I have checked it on three different systems , two of them I use on a daily basis and would note if RAM is really bad. https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=805813 http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-bugs/2012-09/msg04386.html -- SRU Justification [impact] Users of memtest86+ will get false positives of memory failures. This will cause users to suspect hardware and require unnecessary testing/headaches. [Test Case] Boot Ubuntu in Quantal/Raring. At GRUB select memtest86+. Wait until the 7th test. It will fail at the 7th test. [Regression Potential] The fix is just adding another register to clobber in the inline assembly routine. Because this affects newer GCC versions, older releases aren't affected. Thus, if there are compiler changes we should re-test.
  3. I have lost the ability to get into 'advanced start-up/boot option' , i just simply cannot access it now. One of the first things i tried to do was 'repair your computer option' . I tried this around 3 times as well as 'system restore' without success, each time i ended up with the scrolling bar. Since then F8 will not work, i can use F2 to access BIOS or F10 to access multi-boot menu. I am currently doing Memtest86+ v4.20 from Ubuntu start-up menu and this seems to be showing up several errors ?????, i will post when test complete
  4. Sorry, i will rephrase my question. Now that it seems my laptop is working ok physically i.e HDD,RAM, CDROM and motherboard, what ,if anything, can i do to get windows working again? I have tried booting again several times, have checked repair discs on desktop (they work fine) and have tried again on laptop but get stuck again at scrolling bar
  5. Have accessed hdd and run WinDFT , no issues have shown up. I have aslo downloaded another version of Ubuntu [3rd]and have managed to get it to load, even with HDD mounted which is a first, not sure if this is a fluke or whether i have made a mistake previously burning ISO image. so now ihave live system what can i do to restore windows to a previously working state?
  6. Yes HDD recognised. I have full access to all files
  7. The discs i am using are UBUNTU and one from Slitaz. linux. I have HDD mounted onto desktop now
  8. just to add to that... I have shutdown and replaced HDD and the laptop will no longer boot from cd. I have set BIOS to boot from cd first. Does this mean anything? Im lost :
  9. Ok, have got laptop stripped back to barebones again and after several attempts have managed to get it to boot livecd. I was presented with the windows installation screen. I have gone through the language, time section and am on the "system recovery option" screen. What can do from here? can i do 'hot installation ' of HDD and try to repair ir restore? I can not thank you enough for your patience in this :
  10. Was wondering about cdrom drive myself, i do know it 'was' working after this problem appeared as i was able to run slitaz, albeit for a short time. So will check that out. As for 'repair your computer' i did try that originally but no longer have the use of the F8 function. I simply cannot get into the advanced boot menu whatsoever. Just to top things of nicely this week i managed to get the "your pc has been blocked by interpol" virus on my desktop. Lord knows why unless it was on my laptop hard drive. Sorted now though thankfully
  11. BIOS is set to boot from CDROM, have tried both discs mentioned above sveral times and also UBUNTU and SLITAZ LIVECD. I have even made another copy of each in case there was a chance the discs were faulty in some way. When it statrs to boot i can here the cd/dvd drive spin for a few seconds then i stops and splash screen/scrolling bar appears again
  12. RAM swapped in every concievable position, unless both are done, they would seem ok. HDD seems to be good. I doubt, given the symtoms, that the motherboard is goosed ( my personal inexperienced guess) I am seriously tempted now to through it out the window and hope it lands in the pond
  13. nope, not that i can remember. Saying that, i normally leave it in sleep mode so rarely boot up
  14. Will try that now. No beeps when booting unless i press function keys to many times
  15. Ok, chkdsk , chkdsk /f , chkdsk /r complete without showing any problems Since i have full access to all files on HDD is there any file i can delete, alter, replace in order to bring windows into an operational condition?
