  1. Well KenB, downloaded the WD diagnostic site . Quick test showed FAIL: ran the full test and after 1hr 22mins I was nitified that some sectors were bad but possibly repairable continued and then FAIL:: Decided to wipe the HHH (another 1hr 18mins ) .. Then to add to my woes, the PC switched itself off,.. power supply 'packed up' Must confess , I did not get as far as trying out Win8 upgrade, so 'browned off'. Time for the 'Lump hammer' treatment I think.. !! Luckily had a spare power supply here , so installed that, now of course ?? got a PASS on the empty WD HDD.. ? plus the Dvd -ram does'nt work??? I think you may as well give up on me Ken. ?
  2. Downloaded the WD diagnostic software . Intitial screen said 'pass'. Did the Quick Test.. FAIL: carried on and completed the Extended Test.. (1hr 22 mins !!) on completion, it said 'test found bad sectors which may be repairable' so, began 'repairing bad sectors' .Failed... At the moment ,Ken I am wiping the whole WD HDD, because of the complete failures, so must confess did not see the need to check Win 8 upgrade assistant. Must ask a friend to try the WD disk when I have re-formatted it ,. Oh by the way , -in passing- to add to my woes the power supply decided to 'pack-up'.!! Thankfully I had a spare to replace .. Considering the 'lump hammer' treatment??
  3. Hello again KenB.. re the first part ,yes I did indeed change the connections from the XP ,hd and transferred to the WD hd.. went through the start procedure and ended up with a completely 'blue blank screen' ! I was thinking yesterday that I have a 'duff' WD hard disk , seems very much like it ,.? No Ken I did not run a Win8 diagnostic , I suppose because initially it 'fired up' O.K. You are of course quite right in your assumptions , it is, as stated a new replacement for my old (stand bye ) PC; showing its age now of course , that is , the old board that was . !.. But if it is the new H/D,at fault, then I'm rather surprised at the 'let-down' Thanks again for your input
  4. Thank you Plastic Nev, my apologies for that , and my sincere thanks for your corrections. Must pay more attention .!! cheers
  5. Thanks Randy for your brief reply and query re the '****-up' The gist of it all is that after installing a new mother board( Foxconn) and new CPU , plus new Weston Digital Caviar blue 500 gb H/D , I was confronted with the Recovery message, saying that I need to use the installation disk recovery tools .. Error code 0xc000000e....Also as pointed out to KenB, the WD 500 hd seems to get very 'warm' to the touch.. Have disconnected this , for the time being ,so now of course I get just XP Pro on the original installed disk working O.K, Even though it worked fine initailly with Win 8 (on the WD disk) .. Would mention that on this particular board it will only accept 2gb of ram , This have any bearing ?? Thanks again
  6. Thanks KenB,for your reply to my 'cocked-up' query(shows how naive I am ) I appreciate that he new WD hard drive should not be too warm or hot to the touch, What concerns me is , after new M/board installation and new CPU, and working O.K, I get the recovery message, etc By the way, what am I doing wrong that the original message is so 'messed up ' readability wise?
  7. Having fairly recently replaced my old motherboard (Foxconn), and new CPU, plus a new WD 500GB, (Caviar Blue) I added Win8 to the new drive, ( The existing older HD had WinXP Pro ). It all seemed to work O.K, that is until I returned from holiday to find that , on 'firing -up' the PC, and after waiting ages to boot up , I was confronted with ...<br> " Recovery" " Your PC needs to be repaired.. a required device is not connected or cannot be accessed.<br> Error Code: 0xc000000e........ " You will need to use recovery tools on your installation media"<br> Press Enter to try again<br> Press , F8 for start settings<br> Press , F9 to use a different O/S ( The first two did nothing, pressing F9 took me to a Task manager page ( white on black) and then a choice of Win8 or 'other O/S.....<br> Win XP Pro is O.K ! After noting that the new WD HD was quite warm/ to hot, I removed same ,and checked and re-checked all wiring ,plugs etc <br> Not being too PC savvy I hope this has at least helped to provide some measure of help in identifying<br>my problem ( if a t all ??) Many thanks anyway
  8. OK KenB, Will do, I am going to try another ' recommended' firm for inks, and try again.. Failing that , will even try to 'Refiil' the Epson cartridges, and if I,m told "Not recognised" !.. dump the printer ???? cheers
  9. Thanks Jelly Bean, So many conflicting reports regarding ink for various printers, but yes I tend to agree, that manufacturers really want to 'hog' the market.. I thought the 'copy' cartridge people had just about got it beat,.. obviously .. not quite ..Yet my Canon, does'nt mind what cartridge, (within reason ) I use ! Thanks again
  10. So sorry, should have made things clearer.. It's the Epson that is the cause of my problem, I 'get by' with the Canon
  11. I am aware that this is an 'almost' repeat of previous threads on the subject...! I have two printers here one a Canon ip4500 and the other, (more recent) an Epson SX425W. Like a lot of you ,I thought the original ink prices were a bit 'much' so opted for alternatives... Only needed to change the Black cartridge, (this machine drinks ink !) but nope,, no go, " cartridge not recognised" .. Really prefer the Canon, but I'm stuck with this one ... Any suggestions please??
  12. Hello KenB and thanks for your reply. .In device manager there is indeed a 'yelllow question mark' on Ethernet controller
  13. Greetings to all..!! as a new member, I would greatly appreciate any help offered. Some time ago , my computer gave up the ghost , in consequence, I purchased a 'second hand' one, from e-bay.?? The board is a Foxconn 945G7MA (bit of an oldie)Fitted board as replacement, and it' fired up' quite well,.. except.... I cannot access the internet !! Drivers fitted etc, just keep getting " error 769 " more or less telling me there is no ethernet connection?? no reference to LAN anywhere ( by the way I use Sky .com as my ISP) even running their set-up disc --'nowt' My second desktop runs fine , but there just is no connection shown with this motherboard , with an ethernet cable; from the modem..? I repeat, otherwise it runs just fine.. Would certainly like some help or suggestions (Not the Lump hammer treatment yet please ) Thanks for at least reading this lot anyway
