  1. Thanks, Starbuck I'll have a wade through and see if I'm a victim!
  2. I'm probably not alone - or the first - to ask this. I've tried looking on 'the web' for answers, but some of them leave me even more confused. I've noticed (increasingly of late) that when I try to access some sites - especially those that offer streaming (like football sites) they take an AGE to load. I think that a lot of it is down to them all being subscribed to the dreaded Facebook which seems to want to load all of ITS crap before clearing the way to what you really want. But also I've noticed that a couple of processes seem to take up an inordinate amount of Mem usage when I go investigating through Windows Task Manager. Main culprits are MsMpEng.exe and svchost.exe. Just what are these FOR? and can I do without them?
  3. Just a thought (because I'm a new owner!!), but could SatNav systems be included in the Mobiles and Tablets forum?
  4. Yippeeee!! Went and got an optical mouse this morning - and it works like a dream. Have disabled the touchpad and am not groaning in frustration every two minutes. I feel much more in control, now. Thank you, both Ken and Nev for your help.
  5. Thought I'd let you know, Nev, that I followed your recommendation and got a MAGNIFICENT result. Feel like I'm sitting in the local multiscreen every time I turn the tele on! Thanks for your help!
  6. OK. Will do. Thanks for your help
  7. Aha! Just found under 'Hardware' tab a button that allows me to disable the installed mouse! (It's billed as a PS/2 compatible. Won't do that yet, though, until I've got a replacement exterior mouse available.
  8. Hi Ken No. I have no 'Device Settings' on Mouse. I get 'Mouse Properties' and Tabs under tyhat for 'Buttons'. Pointers. Pointer Options.Wheel. and Hardware. Unless I'm missing something here?
  9. Hi Ken Sorry, I missed your post last night. Thanks for your info. I don't have a hand inscribed on the F7 button on my keyboard, but I'll try it anyway. I assume that repeating the keystrokes reverses the action, right? I've also looked at the stuff on the very useful link you posted (thanks!), but my Control Panel doesn't seem to conform. Cheers Bernie
  10. Hello AGAIN, Nev. We can't go on meeting like this! Glad I'm not the only Touchpadophobe! Don't have a device settings tab in the mouse section of Control Panel Settings and don't see 'tapping' anywhere, either. All I've been able to ascertain from the mouse section of the Control Panel 'Settings' is that it is PS/2 compatible. That gives me options for Pointers (something there called 'Scheme'), Buttons and Wheel. Cheers Bernie
  11. When I said in a recent post that I was sticking with XP Pro because I'd tried out Windows 7 on my wife's laptop and disliked it intensely, I've come to realise that it wasn't the system I disliked, but the touchpad gubbins on her Dell laptop! At the time, I was using a very old IBM Touchpad with the little red button in the keyboard. I now own a HP Compaq NC6320 Dual Core Laptop and I realise that my common hate factor is the touchpad. So, I'm going to buy an old steam-driven mouse, but which one? Any recommendations would be gratefully received - as would tips and hints about how to disable the touchpad.
  12. Wow! Why didn't I spot this? Price is a bit steep compared with the Digiflex unit (£11), but with that I need a coax/optical converter and a USB charger unit, a coax cable and an optical cable. I'll cost it all out. but I'm inclined to follow your advice. Thank you so much for taking the trouble on my behalf. Cheers Bernie
  13. Sorry. Manufacturer is DigiFLEX!!
  14. Just had an email from eBay supplier I queried regarding the external soundcard he's advertising. He says I CAN use use USB as power source only. Piece of kit is USB External 6 Channel 5.1 S/PDIF Optical Sound Card Audio For PC Laptop Netbook. It's made by Digitex. No harm in trying it, I suppose.
  15. Hello again, Nev Thanks for getting back to me. Yes, I know the headphone outlet won't give me surround sound, but it was a way to check out which was which on the speakers. I can conform that the SPDiff output on the TV is an RCA type. Thanks again Bernie
