Thanks Starbuck, Desktop has arrived with Windows 10 pre-installed and no problems yet. With a couple of years' to pass before Microsoft cease to support Windows 8.1 I'm not too concerned as I'll probably be happy to renew my two laptops then anyway. David :)

I've ordered a new desktop PC and must choose an operating system. Hitherto, I've been very much against Windows 10 but, given that time has elapsed for glitches to have been ironed out, I am now undecided whether to choose it given that Microsoft will eventually cease to service Windows 8 earlier than 10. In either case, I will install Classic Shell. Any thoughts will be most appreciated. David :)

Since installing some updates, each time I click an icon to open a page, such as this Tesco site, a warning notice appears on my desktop asking me to confirm whether I want to open it. [ATTACH=CONFIG]1513.vB5-legacyid=2610[/ATTACH] Could somebody please tell me if and how to disable it? Thanks, David

If I refresh my Windows 8.1 PC to factory settings and reinstall Windows 8.1, could somebody tell me whether the dreaded Windows 10 will automatically install before I have a chance to disable automatic updates? If Windows 10 does automatically load, is it still possible to revert back to Windows 8.1. Thanks, David

I can't recall exactly how I did it Ken but this method works: On the log in screen click the power button situated to the bottom right, hold down the shift key and press restart. A screen comes up with various options one of which being to reset the system to factory settings. All installed files will be lost which would be good if the PC had come into the wrong hands.

Out of curiosity, why do you want to upgrade to Windows 10? What do you want to do with it that you can't do with Windows? Unless it's really important to you, you might be well advised to avoid a load of frustration and stick with Windows 7.

I fully realise you won't tell me how to get in but any advice about what to do will be most appreciated. I received my laptop this morning and can only assume I mistyped my log in password, as I'm now unable to get past the log in screen and therefore am unable to do anything. Unfortunately, I hadn't my Windows account password immediately available and skipped entering it. I haven't even got a guest account. I'm in despair over this and would go as far as buying and reinstalling Windows were this necessary or possible.

Thank you GRANDAD. It was late at night and my mind was wandering looking for problems. In the light of day I strongly suspect the laptop is an unwanted return or display item, hence the twelve months warranty, and it's extremely unlikely indeed that there would be anything illegal on it. Having ordered an HP Envy laptop from Amazon with a 12 month warranty, the thought has struck me that I'll have no idea what may have been downloaded on it. Could be I'm being overly paranoid but is there any way I can make sure there's nothing dodgy lurking hidden away on the hard drive? I sometimes solve such issues by restoring my PC back to a restore point set before the problem arose. As a precaution, I occasionally manually create a restore point while all is working well.

I've installed Classic Shell which makes Windows 8.1 look like Windows 7 but I've no idea whether that would work with Windows 10.

I'm not in the least bit excited - Having just got used to using Windows 8.1 with Classic Shell installed, the last thing I need is another horror to start at square one again. I actually used to like Microsoft but, since my experiences of 8 and 8.1, I loathe them !!!

I happily use Open Office but became so frustrated with dodgy downloads, I bought it on a CD from eBay for less than a couple of quid including postage - Well worthwhile!
