[Solved] New Desktop PC - Windows 8 or 10 ?
Woodworker replied to Woodworker's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Thanks Starbuck, Desktop has arrived with Windows 10 pre-installed and no problems yet. With a couple of years' to pass before Microsoft cease to support Windows 8.1 I'm not too concerned as I'll probably be happy to renew my two laptops then anyway. David :) -
I've ordered a new desktop PC and must choose an operating system. Hitherto, I've been very much against Windows 10 but, given that time has elapsed for glitches to have been ironed out, I am now undecided whether to choose it given that Microsoft will eventually cease to service Windows 8 earlier than 10. In either case, I will install Classic Shell. Any thoughts will be most appreciated. David :)

Since installing some updates, each time I click an icon to open a page, such as this Tesco site, a warning notice appears on my desktop asking me to confirm whether I want to open it. Could somebody please tell me if and how to disable it? Thanks, David

Thank you Randy - I've egg on my face as I should have realised that :) David

If I refresh my Windows 8.1 PC to factory settings and reinstall Windows 8.1, could somebody tell me whether the dreaded Windows 10 will automatically install before I have a chance to disable automatic updates? If Windows 10 does automatically load, is it still possible to revert back to Windows 8.1. Thanks, David

I can't recall exactly how I did it Ken but this method works: On the log in screen click the power button situated to the bottom right, hold down the shift key and press restart. A screen comes up with various options one of which being to reset the system to factory settings. All installed files will be lost which would be good if the PC had come into the wrong hands.

Out of curiosity, why do you want to upgrade to Windows 10? What do you want to do with it that you can't do with Windows? Unless it's really important to you, you might be well advised to avoid a load of frustration and stick with Windows 7.

Just a quickie to say I've done it - Hoorah !!!
-
I fully realise you won't tell me how to get in but any advice about what to do will be most appreciated. I received my laptop this morning and can only assume I mistyped my log in password, as I'm now unable to get past the log in screen and therefore am unable to do anything. Unfortunately, I hadn't my Windows account password immediately available and skipped entering it. I haven't even got a guest account. I'm in despair over this and would go as far as buying and reinstalling Windows were this necessary or possible.

Buying Refurbished HP Envy Laptop...
Woodworker replied to Woodworker's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Thank you GRANDAD. It was late at night and my mind was wandering looking for problems. In the light of day I strongly suspect the laptop is an unwanted return or display item, hence the twelve months warranty, and it's extremely unlikely indeed that there would be anything illegal on it. Best regards, David -
Having ordered an HP Envy laptop from Amazon with a 12 month warranty, the thought has struck me that I'll have no idea what may have been downloaded on it. Could be I'm being overly paranoid but is there any way I can make sure there's nothing dodgy lurking hidden away on the hard drive? I've already got a similar machine with which I've been extremely pleased and am buying another as a back up. http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0185X8D20?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00

I sometimes solve such issues by restoring my PC back to a restore point set before the problem arose. As a precaution, I occasionally manually create a restore point while all is working well.

Here's a link you might find helpful: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10- If you are a novice with Windows 7, my advice is to stay with it - Windows 8.1 is a nightmare and I don't want another. I've installed Classic Shell which makes Windows 8.1 look like Windows 7 but I've no idea whether that would work with Windows 10.
-
I happily use Open Office but became so frustrated with dodgy downloads, I bought it on a CD from eBay for less than a couple of quid including postage - Well worthwhile!
-
If it hasn't reappeared, then changing your OS seems a very radical measure! If you upgrade to 8.1 you'll most likely meet with further frustrations such as not being easily able to find things but at least Microsoft have committed to allowing us to upgrade free to Windows 10 following its release later this year. Hopefully, they'll have listened to users and simplified things.
-
Probably not the professional way but have you considered resetting your computer to a previous restore point?
-
Thank you Randy :)
-
But would this entail having to leave my laptop switched on and logged on all night? That doesn't seem particularly satisfactory either or am I being pedantic?

My sight isn't what it was and I find Windows Magnifier invaluable - In fact I keep it set to 125 percent most of the time. If you haven't tried it, I thoroughly recommend you to open it and have a play.

[ Solved ] Infuriating Notice...
Woodworker replied to Woodworker's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Thanks DSTM but the screen locks and won't allow me to do as you suggest or accept it. The only way out for me is to close IS with Task Manager. -

Which Printer Should I Buy?
Woodworker replied to suretisme's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
I loathe Kodak printers with a passion and wouldn't accept one as a gift. I thought I'd been unlucky with the first one I had and eventually bought another but that also went into the bin. Yes, the cartridges are cheaper than some but very soon expire even if the machine is only used occasionally. Also, once the colour cartridge is expired, it isn't possible to print black until the colour is replaced. Kodak consumables are a real rip-off - You only need to peruse user reviews on Amazon for proof of my statement. -
Which Printer Should I Buy?
Woodworker replied to suretisme's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
I understand you are on a budget but do consider the fact that many of the printer manufacturers sell printers cheaply in order to make considerable profits on replacement ink cartridges which run out in surprisingly short periods of time. I've experience of a number of very disappointing printers but must say I'm very impressed with the Brother All-in-One which I now have and would seriously suggest you consider one. Brother aren't the cheapest and the set-up can be irksome but mine utilises four separate ing tanks which don't cost a small fortune and last a decent while. Also, when one tank expires, you may replace just that one without the necessity of replacing all four.
