1. Forget that. I did a system restore which seems to have fixed the problem. Wish I knew what happened in the first place though.
 2. Hi, For some reason I have lost the Microsoft Edge icon from the taskbar and the desktop. I have tried everything I know (which is not much) and cannot find a way to access the internet on my desktop. Can anyone help? Malcolm
 3. Hello Again, My music collection (CDs and MP3s) has become rather large and I would really like to develop a database that I can use to, for example, list all Tchaikovsky pieces, or list all pieces conducted by Herbert von Karajan, or list all violin concertos (or even narrower, list all violin concertos played by Hilary Hahn) etc. etc. I have Microsoft Office 2010 which includes Excel and Access. I am quite familiar with Excel but totally unfamiliar with Access. I know it can be done with Excel using the filter function but I'm just wondering if it would be sophisticated enough for my purpose, or even if Access would be too sophisticated and complex for what I want to do. I am willing to learn Access programming if necessary. Thanks in anticipation, Malcolm
 4. Is anyone aware of any free programs (or at least reasonably priced) for enhancing video quality, that is, graininess, clarity, sharpness, colour etc.? Regards, vavaseur
 5. Hi All, I am studying the classical guitar and I would like to record (audio and visual) my practice sessions for analysis. I have a HP notebook with a built in web cam and, although the visual is adequate, the sound makes my beautiful Ramirez guitar sound like a ukulele! Does anyone have any suggestions. I don't need audiophile quality, just a reasonable, pleasant sound and not too expensive. Thanks in Anticipation, vavaseur
 6. Thanks Ray. Yes that worked and I now have Excel and Word pinned to my taskbar. Those are all I really need. Cheers, vavaseur
 7. Hello again, After doing a full system recovery, updating again to Windows 8.1 and reinstalling various programmes, I had to reinstall Microsoft Office 2010 from a DVD disk which is several years old. I was able to do this successfully, and also obtained a very large Office update (as expected). I am able to open several files saved in both Word and Excel, however, I cannot find any way to open the individual Office applications. The install did not put an icon on my desktop and when I right click on the start menu, the Office showing there is for 2013. I have tried doing a search for Office 2010 but this did not help. I have received such helpful advice from this forum in the past so I am sure someone will be able to help this time. Thanks in anticipation, vavaseur
 8. No I didn't intentionally or knowingly install any drivers. I presume that this was all taken care of in the download. However, everything seems to be working OK - touch wood! Cheers, vavaseur
 9. I have finally got this update after a frustrating and irritating several days. After trying everything suggested on Microsoft's help pages, and judging by the number of comments there were many others having similar problems, I eventually did a system recover. This put the PC back to its original state with the Windows 8 operating system. Before I could upgrade to Windows 8.1 I had to download about 360MB of Windows 8 updates, and I also had to reinstall all the programmes that I had installed since I bought the PC. Finally I was able to download the Windows 8.1 upgrade which obviously already had most of the updates that I had been trying, unsuccessfully, to download!!! There was still about 36MB of updates to download but this was successful. Maybe I should have bought a Mac! Thanks for your help, vavaseur
 10. Hello again, I am having a problem downloading the latest Windows 8.1 update, which is nearly 888MG. I am getting approx. 16% of the download and then it is failing. the error code is 80073712. I have tried running the help function with this error, but this has not made any difference, in fact, in typical Microsoft fashion, the command it is instructing me to select simply doesn't appear on my system Can anyone help with this? An update this size must surely be important. Thanks in anticipation, vavaseur
 11. Thank you all for your helpful responses. I will avoid it like the plague and will also refrain from using the registry cleaner that comes with CCleaner. Regards, vavaseur
 12. I received an e-mail today, purporting to be from Mcafee, for this registry cleaner: Registry Power Cleaner Top Features:

https://secureimages.mcafee.com/email/mcafee/16008/bullet.gif Boost Computer Speed and Performance by removing invalid entries and orphaned files

https://secureimages.mcafee.com/email/mcafee/16008/bullet.gif Scan & Fix Many Computer Errors

https://secureimages.mcafee.com/email/mcafee/16008/bullet.gif 16 Powerful Deep Scans to locate hard to find system errors

https://secureimages.mcafee.com/email/mcafee/16008/bullet.gif Find & Safely Repair Harmful Registry Errors that make your computer unstable

https://secureimages.mcafee.com/email/mcafee/16008/bullet.gif Clean Your Registry of Invalid Entries that slow down your computer

https://secureimages.mcafee.com/email/mcafee/16008/bullet.gif Fix Broken Program Shortcuts that cause error messages

https://secureimages.mcafee.com/email/mcafee/16008/bullet.gif Edit and Remove Bothersome Start-Up Programs that slow down your computer

https://secureimages.mcafee.com/email/mcafee/16008/bullet.gif Speed up Your Email by creating smaller email attachments (up to 5 times)

https://secureimages.mcafee.com/email/mcafee/16008/bullet.gif Minimizes Computer Clutter - minimizes and compresses computer clutter which will drastically free up disk space and speed up your computer

https://secureimages.mcafee.com/email/mcafee/16008/bullet.gif Advanced Photo Compression Tool allows you to create smaller photos and email photos faster

Can someone advise if this is a worthwhile purchase (it's A$44.95) and if it is really likely to do all it says it will do. I have heard conflicting reports about registry cleaners. Thanks in anticipation, vavaseur
 13. Thank you both for your responses. The problem is actually fixed; I believe it was the result of an incomplete east-tec Eraser erase process. I don't know why this happened but after completing the process the disk space is showing a more sensible 505GB of free space. I also expect that the numbers I quoted above was not really a true reflection of available space: If there really had been only 3.05GB free out of 902GB, I doubt if the PC would have even worked! Once again, thanks for your help. Cheers, vavaseur
 14. I have an HP Pavilion desk top PC. There has always been ample space on the hard drive, in fact, I have always had around 60% free space. Yesterday I noticed that I now only have about 3.06GB free out of a total of 912GB and I am very concerned. Looking at the folders on C: I notice that there is a folder called "Erase919.tmp". When I go to properties on this folder it is showing that it is 502GB and yet the folder appears to be empty. Could this be the cause of the problem, if so how could this have happened, and can I delete this folder to reclaim the hard drive space that I have always had in the past? Thanks in anticipation, vavaseur btw I forgot to mention I am using Windows 8.1
 15. Thanks for these helpful replies. I did, of course, mean to say MP4 files. I will try Windows Movie Maker. Thanks again. Cheers, Vavaseur
