  1. Did you buy this computer from a computer store or did you build it yourself? If you built it yourself, what is your motherboard model? If you bought it from the store what brand and model number is the computer. Usually pre-built computer manufacturers do not allow for upgrades because they will lose money that way. If they don't allow you to change out the CPU then you will buy another computer when the one you have slows down. After some looking it does not look good for you, that CPU you have is a BGA, which means it is soldered to the board, so you can not switch it out easily. And if you do remove it, BGA motherboards do not really support any other cpu then the one that was soldered to it in the first place. In the long run it will be cheaper to buy a new unit. Sorry mate. Your CPU does support up to 1600 mhz RAM, so see what RAM you have in your system now and if it is not 1600 mhz you can find some cheap sticks online and upgrade, you wont get that much of a performance boost but, it would be cheaper then buying a new unit, and/or you could buy a faster hard drive.
  2. I LOVE using LINUX! I have been using it for the past 5 years already! To delete everything (wiping the hard drive) is very simple. If your son still has the Ubuntu CD lying around, you can boot into the CD and follow the prompts till you get to the screen that talks about formatting hard drives. Select the hard drive and reformat it to a NTFS partition. This will delete everything on the hard drive. And then reboot, take the CD out and now the data will be erased. If your son does not have the CD lying around. You can download another CD called gparted live. This is allows you to manage, create, and delete partitions. There are videos and documentation on how to use gparted on the internet. But all you have to do is launch the software, select the hard drive partition(s), hit the delete key, select "new" from the menu, click on the filesystem pull-down and select NTFS. NTFS is the partition that Windows uses for its OS, so if you format it to something else Windows wont install. Here is a link to follow, if I made no sense on how to format your partition http://askubuntu.com/questions/145812/how-to-make-a-partition-windows-can-read Now just because you reformat the drive does not mean that someone can not get data off of it. I found an old family hard drive that I wiped 8 years ago. Just for fun I wanted to see what data was on there. Even tho I did not find all the data that was on there I still did find some old photos and parts of old documents totaling about 2GB. To make it really hard for people to try and get data off of the hard drive, it is recommended to write a whole bunch of random data to the drive and that will obscure the data that your son will have on the computer. There is also software out there that makes it possible to make your hard drive data really gone. Here is a link that explains why delete files can be recovered and at the end talks about software to make sure that your data is really gone. http://www.howtogeek.com/125521/htg-explains-why-deleted-files-can-be-recovered-and-how-you-can-prevent-it/ *EDIT* I just realized when you posted this, so it probably does not help you anymore, but I hope it helps some one else.
  3. Acer has a video to get into the UEFI, on its website. http://acer--uk.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/27102/~/accessing-the-uefi-(bios)-setup-on-a-windows-8-system
  4. I just found this article http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware/Scroll-Num-Lock-and-Caps-Lock-LED-s-blinking-and-battery-not/td-p/303391/page/2 and it appears that your problem happens a lot to dv users. A post made by anivid, which is 5 posts up from the bottom, says he fixed it by adjusting the RAM sticks. So it does appear it is a RAM not fully plugged in scenario,
  5. Before contacting HP, could you remove the battery, unplug the power, and hold the power button down for 1 minute. Then reattach the power cord and start to up, on cord power. If it works, shut down and attach the battery and you should be good to go. What holding the power button with no battery or power source will do is discharge all electricity in the laptop. In most cases after experiencing a problem, this usually fixes it.
  6. When their is a problem with your computer during boot, it tells you through your keyboard. Sometimes it wont let you turn your caps key and number pad key (if you have on) on, other times they wont let your turn them off or they just blink. If you could please count the # of times the caps key blinks I could find the problem. When the computer wont let you turn those two keys on/off it means that the OS had a panic of some sorts and you would have to repair it with a Windows repair disk. But if it blinks it means there is a hardware problem.
  7. The high-pitched noise could be coil whine. And that could cause the PSU to not give the appropriate amount of voltage to the computer. Or as KenB said a capacitor problem, in which case the capacitor maybe failing Nowadays PSU's are smart and at a certain voltage they turn there fans on and start cooling themselves. It could be that your coils are damaged and as a result not giving enough power for the fan to turn itself on, which may explain the fan not turning on. Here is an article that explains coil whine from the Corsair website http://www.corsair.com/us/blog/there-is-more-to-psu-noise-than-fan-noise-how-we-fight-coil-whine-in-the-rm-series-power-supplies Is the fan dusty at all, it may just be seized and the PSU is protecting itself from overheating by throwing out a lower current. All the green light means is that the motherboard recognizes that standby power is available. Also remember not to open the PSU up. If their is something wrong internally and you want to fix it, go to a repair shop.
  8. Wouldn't there be no default connection password because his new router is not wireless? The non wifi router would get the internet from his provider and would be shuffled off to his wifi router through an Ethernet cable once he sets it up and then the wifi router would broadcast the signal to the device. And to use the wireless he would use the password from the old wireless router, which is the same from the last time he used it.
  9. Malware has been known to infect a system and convince a Windows system that it is not genuine. I know you checked your computer once before but could you check it again? Also Microsoft has a program called Genuine Diagnostics tool, if you wouldn't mind could you download and run it on your machine? To use it click "Continue", wait patiently until its done then click the "Copy" button then “Paste” the report into a reply.
  10. Windows 8.1 switched to Intels xHCI USB controller interface, which is far different then that of other generations of controller interfaces. It could be that Acer has not released a driver yet that is able to communicate from your keyboard to the controller interface. The simplest way to fix this would be to search for driver updates. To see if their is an update for your USB's hit the Windows Key and type "Device Manager". Open it and scroll down a ways till you find a section called "Universal Serial Bus controllers", click the arrow and a drop down list will appear of all the different devices on your system. Go down the list and right click them, then select "update driver software" there may or may not be an update for the device. If none need updating , you can disable the new interface and use the older generation. To accomplish this go to the UEFI BIOS and under the advanced tab disable Intel XCHI Mode and that should fix your problem.
  11. Yes, after the "Microsoft Corporation" the OS loads the video driver and sets the display resolution to what was chosen. Your monitor may have that resolution available, but you may not be able to use it because your refresh rate is to low/high. Do you only have one refresh rate or multiple? You can find that out by going to where you changed your display resolution. And is all of your drivers up to date?
  12. 1). Go to Computer Management at Control Panel -> Administrative Tools 2). Click on Disk Management and you will get a shown of partition hardisk on your computer 3). Right Click on Hardisk that doesn't show a partition and choose "Import Foreign Disks" 4). Check the Checklist and Click Ok
  13. I think I may have a guide for you. The link that follows pictures a complete guide to disassemble your monitor. http://www.hp.com/hpinfo/globalcitizenship/environment/productdata/Countries/_MultiCountry/disassembly_monito_2010415194832.pdf
  14. Indeed it would.
  15. May I ask what router you have? The router may have MAC filtration on it. If that is the case, you would have to gain entry into your router and add the MAC address of your Kindle into the router. If your router does not have MAC filtering, try turning the router on and off again.
