  1. I wanted rid of it completely. Turning it off still has it running, whereas disabling it like I did is rid of if.
  2. I've found a way Completely Disable and Remove “News and Interests” Feature in Windows 10
  3. My desktop updated today and now Windows has added, without my permission, "News and Interests" Is there a way to completely uninstall this unwanted crap that's clogging up my PC? All I can see is way to disable it, which I've done.
  4. Sorry if this is in the wrong place. I've been using OpenDNS for years, I have a free account and have it set to block things I don't want - had it before they started Family Safe. Today when I started my PC I couldn't connect to anything online. My wifi was working fine, checked it with my phone and iPad. Windows said it was connected and had internet. After an hour of head scratching I changed the DNS settings from OpenDNS to the Google ones (8.8.8.8/8.8.4.4) and things are working fine. I haven't been able to find anything online about problems with OpenDNS. Just wondering if anyone else is having problems and if anyone can recommend and alternative to OpenDNS where I can set what I want blocked - or an alternative to Family Safe.
  5. Just and update, don't know what happened but the drive has worked fine the last two days after being left connected. I did get a Windows update so maybe that had something to do with it.
  6. It says the best driver is already installed. I think I'll just have to remember to unplug it and plug it back in when I need it - which is annoying.
  7. I couldn't figure out how to edit my previous reply. I noticed that when I boot the PC from cold after its been turned off on the wall the DVD drive appears with the error above. However when I unplugged it and replugged it yesterday to get it working then rebooted later in the day, when it had been left on on the wall the drive still showed.
  8. Yes. When I boot up it isn't recognised. I have to unplug it and plug it in again before it appears in Windows. When I first boot, like today, its showing in the Universal Serial Bus controllers section of the Device Manager as "Unknown USB Device (Invalid Configuration Descriptor)".
  9. I have a Lenovo ThinkCentre M720q, the tiny one. Lenovo sell a USB optical drive specifically for this model but I bought a Verbatim one because it was cheaper. I connected it up and it worked fine. But when I started the computer the next day the drive isn't recognized, not listed as an optical drive. Just as as a USB device that isn't recognised. Is there way to make Windows recognise the drive every time I boot or am I going to have to plug it in when I need it? My external hard drive works every time OK.
  10. Just got a new PC and remembered seeing this post so one of the first things I did was disable all the above! Thanks
  11. Do you have Photoshop? I had problems with my Windows 7 freezing and found that forcing the Adobe genuine software program stopped the freezes - can't remember the actual program name, sorry.
  12. I found the bit " so if you want to switch to Edge—and you do " very amusing I'll leave it for now as I'm going to get a new PC soon and this one will be left offline, or maybe changed to a Linux PC.
  13. I'm still using Windows 7, mostly because Photoshop won't run on Wine on Linux, and partly because I'm still deciding which new computer to buy. Yesterday I got Windows updates, today when I booted Windows is installing Edge  I'm waiting for it to try to connect then I'll tell my firewall to block it. Can I uninstall Edge or will it keep coming back?
  14. Thanks, very helpful. I have a 2Tb NAS with most of my photos stored on, but currently have a 1Tb hard drive in my PC, it's about half full, so I'm guessing a 1Tb hard drive would be what I need. Might see if I can find something with both SSD for the OS and 1Tb HD for everything else.
  15. Hi all, I need a new desktop PC, but haven't been in the loop for a while so have no idea what's what. I need a PC capable of running Photoshop and other photo editing software, a bit of video editing using OpenShot, and some light gaming. I was going to buy a PC a few months ago but lockdown came along and the prices shot up. Just looking for advice, and I'd prefer a ready made, or configurable system, as previously when I tried building my own I ran into compatibility issues. Thanks in advance.
