  1. Hi. Sorry I obviously never explained properly. I have no access to windows functions, c: Prompt only I am locked out of windows not sure why. So my only route of access is msdos, its the commands for that I require.
  2. Hi Guys, Okay I have an ongoing issue with my laptop (I will update on that soon - for some daft reason my works firewall blocks me on this website after I've posted so I can't update thread, but will do at home). I can read on phone though. Anyway, my problem here is I can get into my laptop via the C:\prompt, however I can't for the life of me copy folders and subfolders onto a 128gb usb drive I have. I really need someone to type it out as exactly it should be. For example the file I am trying to copy is on my d:, most notably the folder below:- d:\pictures & videos\ In the above folder I then have loads of sub folders i.e. family, holidays etc etc. Now I don't know if the d:\pictures & videos\ is actually too big to fit on the USB (this is found in H:\), so I'm trying to at least save a little time and save the folders within this directory onto my usb, but obviously some of these folders have subfolders within them. I'm trying this xcopy but every time I try it just says 0 files copied. So therefore I'm obviously using the wrong commands. What exactly should I type if I want to copy everything within the d:\pictures & videos\family (<---- the family folder for example has many subfolders within it). ^^^^ that needs copied onto my usb. Hopefully I've explained that correctly. Many thanks in advance. FD
  3. Does that mean the data is salvageable though via a professional company?
  4. No the drive is 3.5, usb power won't work, that#'s why I had to use the power plug too.
  5. Hi, Got a USB2.0 to IDE/SATA Cable. I've tried it, however I'm not sure if there is an issue with the power cable. However once I plugged it in smoke came from the drive (near where it was plugged in). Have I totally destroyed the unit? I have a PS4 connector that looks like it may fit the power adapter, but not sure what to do? Don't want to damage the PS4 cable. TIA FD
  6. Hi, thanks for response I will get more info once back home. It is windows 10, I did the free update ages ago but just out of blue this happened. The laptop does boot up but just keeps jumping to update and then restarts and goes again, I can access the f8 or whatever button it is during startup but I'm not sure what I do at that point. As said i did put image file from windows on a usb and tried that, it gives me options to repair and stuff but it doesn't work. I'll give more detailed response later. FD
  7. Hi, Thanks for quick response, need to reply thru phone as my work seems to have security issues with threads on the website Not sure if its same thing u mention the size and refer to a pc or laptop drive, however its an external hard drive unit. Thanks FD
  8. Hi All, New here and looking for some help. I have an old Toshiba Satellite, working fine up until just before Xmas. Was letting the niece mess around with it, don't believe she done anything silly on the laptop, but looks like it has something to do with Windows 10. It keeps looping trying to update, but can't. I've tried repairing or restoring to a previous version but no success, believe after 30 days the restore doesn't work and unfortunately looks like it doesn't automatically back-up to an earlier time. So basically I'm stuck on this continual loop. I have tried online and downloaded some boot disk thingy (or USB), however it still doesn't work when I try repairing/restoring from there. Main thing is I don't want to lose the data on the hard-disk. I can get in through C: prompt, but that will take time to copy over, but willing to do that. Could take it to a shop, but not sure what they will end up doing and how much. I don't seem to have any windows disk for the original (the old windows sticker is worn so can't see numbers). And as I said don't want to erase c: or anything like that and lose my data. Anyone able to help? If you need more than that, please let me know. TIA FD
  9. Hi All, New here, hoping someone can assist. Seems my external HD pack up, the blue light keeps flashing and I can't power on, laptop ain't reading it. IT's an old Freecom unit (250gb if I remember right), a PATA unit, anyone aware if I can use it on one of those quick reader things, I've tried searching online (Amazon) but it keeps taking me to a SATA reader, but did seem to indicate that I could buy another cable to enable to work with a PATA Drive. Hope I've explained that okay, not very good at this PC tech stuff. Any other info needed, let me know. TIA FD
  10. Hi All, Found this site on the web via google, looking for some help on a couple of matters that have cropped up recently. Will post in the relevant sections. I have basic knowledge of computing. From Glasgow, as my username suggests I'm in my 40s. Cheers FD
