  1. Hi Starbuck! It appears that I'm up to date on MSSE.. Will continue to monitor to see if anything else goes awry, although still not sure what caused that total whiteScreen situation to manifest.. I will take a look at the links you sent re: a possibly better AV.. As always, thanks for the info and will be in touch on how things go here as things progress...!
  2. Thanks KenB...! Please do so as Starbuck has saved me on many, many issues before....... :)
  3. Hi KenB.. Yes, that's the one! Good to hear that I can still use my machine.. Ultimately might have to deal with all of this down the road....... and we all know the dynamic at play here.. Buy/get new stuff! I'm not quite ready yet, speaking personally.. As far as an "up to date" antiVirus, I'm running very basic stuff (Microsoft Security Essentials) and actually not for sure if it's updated at this point.. I will check on that now.. Will be back in touch if anything further shows up.. One question though..... When I get the blue screen shown above, do I just ignore that and continue on? Please advise.. Thanks for the above info! I do feel better about that little warning now.....:)
  4. I just got a blueWindow alerting me to the fact that as of 1/14, Windows 7 is no longer supported.. Got a feeling that might be the problem, but not for sure.. Yes, I'm still on Windows 7.. Every attempted "update" to W10 has caused my computer all sorts of problems, so have updates now approved via approval only.. Wondering what my options are here now.... Would welcome any ideas.. Thanks in advance...!
  5. Hello to my friends at FPCHelp....! Happy to say that nothing severe to report at this time, however found it interesting that last night.......on the way to bed and checking emails, etc...........I found that there was nothing on my monitor but a huge WHITE SCREEN.. It took up the entire monitor, with no icons showing at the bottom, clock or anything else.. The good news is that this morning I unplugged it and it appeared to perform a normal reBoot.. So glad things went down this way, but wondering if you have any ideas what might have caused this.. I've never seen a white screen like this before.. Unfortunately have seen the BSOD though......:) Please let me know any suspicions/ideas you might have on this one..... Thanks in advance!!
  6. Just a brief note regarding my YouTube issue.. For some reason unknown to me, my computer is now playing YouTube clips just fine...........as if nothing were ever wrong.. I was preparing to reInstall Chrome per your suggestion, but did not get to that point when I discovered by accident that YouTube was now working just fine.. Have you heard of this happening with anyone else? You had mentioned that others were having similar issues with YouTube.. I am now wondering if any of those people have reported anything similar to this.. Bottom line, I think my computer is possessed....:) Will continue to monitor here, but things now appear good.. We'll see how long that lasts......! Thanks again for all your help and will be in touch if anything further "manifests".....:) S
  7. Thanks for that info Starbuck! I'm getting ready to uninstall Chrome shortly, and then reInstall shortly thereafter.... Hoping all of this is pretty straightforward.. If you have any further comments on the above issue, please let me know.. Thanks again! S
  8. So here's a question regarding the re-installation of the browser suggestion per the article above.. If I were to do that, would I lose all of my "favorites" on my current browser?? Trying to figure out a plan of action here and want to know what might be lost vs. the benefits of this action..... Thanks!
  9. That's great news! I'll keep an eye on things and hopefully we can finally close out this very longLived thread....! Thanks to all of you for your help..!
  10. Hello to all at FPCHelp...! I wanted to let you know that I've done some reArranging of the location of my computer where it seems to be getting better ventilation and running cooler these days.. I attached a pic of the SpeedFan readings that are currently happening after the machine has been on for hours, but keeping minimal windows open (don't want to press my luck at this point..).. Please let me know if these readings are within an acceptable range... Thanks again for your help! S
  11. Thank you Starbuck! That worked like a charm......:)
  12. Hello.. I've recently noticed that when trying to access YouTube, it will play for a second or two then I get the following message.........An error occurred. Please try again later. (Playback ID: wTtQ9Rakmvq5VPSO).. If you would, please let me know how to take care of this issue.. I am hoping that you will know what the "Playbeck ID" might mean.. Not for sure if it's related to Windows 7, but through I would try at this locale first.. Please advise if I need to post elsewhere... As always, thanks for your help...! S
  13. Hello to my friends at FreePCHelp..! I was thinking earlier today of my situation overall with this computer.. Many things to consider, no doubt.. I do want to mention that at the very beginning of all this, there was a Windows Update that was attempted the night before everything went south.. I'm wondering if there is a setting change I could engage on my computer that would prevent installation of these things automatically, but maybe get my permission first before installing.. Is that an option? If so, please let me know how to do this.. The "update" that was attempted I believe was a failed install of Windows 10.. I do realize this topic is a double edged sword so to speak.. I simply would like to know before things are installed, especially given all that has gone on since this last "update".. Please let me know about this.. Much more info to come regarding the further cleaning of the fan, etc..... Thanks again for all your help!
  14. Hello to my FreePCHelp friends....! I've been in a digital wasteland for quite awhile now.. I thank you for keeping this thread open.. I wanted to fill you guys in on the latest here.. My friend finally arrived to fix the start button issue.. He said that it pretty much fixed itself as he was moving wires, etc. around......... and that it behaved as if there was possibly a short somewhere, or maybe a loose connection (I'm now wondering if I did this while blowing out the computer earlier).. Anyway, after fixing things here he checked back in later via phone to see if things were still up and running, which they were at that point.. Of course that evening, the computer overheated again, so I'm back to square one.. I did mention the overheating issue to him while he was here.. After looking inside, he said that it looked like things were pretty clean now, with the exception of one particular fan...........which he said needed to be taken out and blown out as well.. No problem, as all you have to do is remove 4 screws.. Well, I'm a bit on edge about opening up the computer again since the last time I did it I suddenly had the "start button" problem........something I'd never seen before.. At this point I'm going to begin executing the things you guys suggested about moving my computer to a location where it would get better ventilation.. I'm moving forward with "baby steps" here right now.. As far as current performance, things go well as long as I don't have multiple pages open and running.. Also, I now get offLine when the computer is not being used.........including overnight.. So far, no problems, but I'd like to address that fan issue at some point.. Will let you know how things are as they progress...........and as always, please feel free to make suggestions on anything above... I can always use your help! Thanks again...
  15. I wanted to check in regarding he above problem which I've not commented on in several days.. That is all because I'm now having issues with the "start button" on my computer, or something related to it.. (typing this now from gFriend's computer).. On top of what has already been described, I began noticing issues trying to get back online after being booted off.. That was no problem previously, at least not in an immediate way.. Now the following happens.... I push the button, nothing happens immediately at first but there is now a delay of five to ten seconds in coming on.........then it goes off on it's own.........then after five to ten seconds, comes back on........on it's own ad infinitum!! Decided to just unplug the thing, as it was no doubt not good for the computer.. Amazing.. I told my friend of this problem (who was my local tech guy) and he said he has seen this before, and always had to do with a startButton issue of some sort.. Problem is, my friends no longer lives in town but hours away.. He will be coming though "probably in the next week or two".......:/ !!! Looks like it might be time for a tech fast, voluntary or not.... Will be back with you as soon as I can sort all this out... More later, and again thanks for all your help.. Let's keep this thread open....:)
