Clockwork Egg

All, I am running XP on a standard issue Dell pc with (i thought) little problems. It has recently however started to go on a mega go-slow and even opening IE takes an eternity. Could it be infested with something...or is it a problem with XP...or c) none of the above? If anybody could point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,
