Thanks for the response - ideally I would prefer not to lose all my files - pls can you advise another way?

Hello This morning my HP PC was working just fine but when I booted it up this afternoon I ended up with the message that said that Windows hadn't closed down properly - it offers me the opportunity to go into safe mode but when I select it all I get is a list of commands. Whether I choose to boot up in safe mode or normally I end up with the same result: a black screen. I tried restoring the system but I get the following error message (my pc is French so this is a rough translation): No restauration point has been created on the computer's disc system. In order to create a restauration point please create the 'protection system'. When I click on 'protection system' I get the following message: Your computer is functioning in a limited diagnostic state. If you use the restauration system in this limited state you cannot cancel the restauration. The help rubric is not available in this state. I can't get beyond this point. Needless to say I have no back up discs nor a copy of Vista. Some advice in how to proceed would be much appreciated! Susie

Hello Over the last few days an advert for sofinco has started appearing. Given that Sofinco is a credit company I am suspicious that this may be malware that has found its way onto my PC. I have copied a logfile of Hijack this, and I was wondering whether someone could have a look at it. Hi All seems to be working fine now thanks - HP updates are no longer automatic and as long as I turn off my firewall I can load all updates without my computer going into meltdown. Thanks very much for your help!

Hi Thanks for the response... I've just tried to reply but I don't think it went through, so apologies if you get this twice. This evening everything was working ok on my pc, but I clicked 'ok' on a request for an itunes update, and since then I have been unable to open up the internet, and when I tried to click on HP updates it wouldn't work either. I have tried to reboot several times but each time I end up having to disconnect the kettle lead in order to shut down (the PC is currently frozen as I type this - I've had to hook up my old laptop). I managed to get into safe mode and run hijack this and have attached a copy (I am a one trick pony and this is the only thing I know to do when things aren't working properly). I've run an analysis of the report but nothing interesting came up, except to say that my windows pack needs updating and that I appear not to be using any antivirus (I am running Zone Alarm, which says that the antivirus is activated). Now I am just sitting here cursing the day I decided to welcome a new PC running Windows Vista into my life!! Any thoughts? Hello I've checked my available hard drive space (I'm assuming that's the C drive we're talking about?) and I've got 254 of a possible 327 remaining. For the Factory Image I've only got 1.40 of 7.52... My printer is an Epson Stylus which doesn't agree very well with windows vista. Anything else you can think of ?!

Hi I have an HP computer which runs on Windows Vista. Often I try to shut down my PC, at which point it starts trying to install HP updates. However, I come back to the PC several hours later to find that it is still trying to do the same installation process, and the only way to shut the PC down is to turn it off at the plug. I have also had problems when Mozilla Firefox tries to install updates. I have run a Hijack This report, which hasn't come up with anything useful, so I am at a loss as to what to try next. Any ideas? Thanks Susie
