  1. Ive already been through MSconfig and ive only allowed AVG and Java to run and in the services there are only a few non-microsoft programs that are running... but what I need help with is knowing which microsoft services I can disable so that things will be running smoothly for me thank you :)
  2. At the moment i dont have any p2p programs installed at the moment as the system is too slow and installing them would be pointless. I only have Dell media express (As it is the only way to listen to music using it), Microsoft Expression, FL Studio and a few minor programs such as Winrar and so on. I mentioned p2p etc as I would most probably use them in the future, so just incase you tell me to disable certain services which are beneficial for them to run.
  3. Ok ive restarted the pc again and opened notepad and left it for 10 mins and now physical memory usage is between 73% - 99%, and the top 3 services that use the most memory are searchprotocol @ 30mb, svchost @ 25mb and firefox @ 5mb and searchindexer keeps going up and down between 2 mb - 35 mb. Thanks
  4. Ok im on normal mode now and for the first 10 - 15 mins things are fine then it starts slowing down when i start running programs and stays that way after I exit them, it also happens if i leave it idle. At the moment cpu usage is 5 %, memory used 51&, 50 processes. OK Now ive opened My computer and FL studio (and then closed fl studo) and now it takes 10 - 15 seconds to switch between windows and theres a 4 second delay when typing. Processes are 47, CPU is 4% and now memory used is going up and down between 30% and 99% and continues to do so even when left alone. Firefox is also freezing now and again. This happens not only with fl studio but with every other application. Is it a case of adjusting the physical memory because at the moment the system is managing it. Thanks
  5. Hi, well im at safe mode at the moment and cpu usage total is 1% and physical memory is 36%, processes: 24.. Im going to restart the laptop now and ill get back to you with the details Thanks
  6. :mad:Hi again, ive had a previous thread before about my slow system which worked temporarily but then things went bad again. Now ive reformatted and have nothing at all installed just, windows vista business and a few minor programs (dell media direct, microsoft expression, AVG 8 - all legit). Anyway ive given up on searching for the problem as it probably is the fact that my laptop is nearly 2 years old. Ive noticed that it works perfectly on safe mode and would like to know if you could inform me of all the services I can safely disable. Heres some basic info which might help to choose which services to disable: *Dell Inspiron 6400, Bluetooth, 2GB Ram, ATI Radeon x1400, 120GB HDD, 500GB Maxtor External USB HDD, USB WiFi (built in one is damaged), Vista Business 32 bit. *I use the internet only to chat on MSN, search for information and to download/upload files (p2p, torrents, ftp). *I dont use the Aero theme, just the basic theme. *Listen to and produce music. *The laptops only used by me. *I dont share anything on my network or stream anything. *I dont use remote desktop or anything remote like that. *I dont use any sort of backup (apart from system restore) One last thing, can you recommend a good driver update program as I have a feeling the slowness may have something to do with the fact that I cant find driver updates for all my hardware. Thank you:D
  7. Intel T2060 1.6 x 2 2GB Ram Ati Radeon x1400 512mb 120GB HDD
  8. Vista Business came pre-installed!
  9. Hi I bought a dell laptop a year ago (inspiron 6400) and im sure it has dell media direct installed on a partition. When I press the Dell Media Direct button next to the power button when the laptop is off it shows the dell media direct startup screen but then proceeds to a normal startup. Is there a chance that Vista isnt compatible with it??
  10. It started happening with my old mouse so i bought another one which happened to be the exact same make and model and that didnt change a thing then eventually it stopped working all together. Ive tried it on other laptops on different OS's (including vista business and home) and it works perfectly
  11. Hi the problems been going on/off for a while but ive reinstalled vista several times.. the last time i reinstalled it thats when it started playing up more than usual. Everything else like the external hdd, wifi and keyboard work fine! I had a infrared keyboard/mouse plugged into the usb and that worked for a while but the mouse would suddenly stop working after about 20 mins of use but still shows on the IR reciever that it still is getting movement from the mouse.
  12. Hi thanks for all the information. Unfortunatly the mouse didnt come with a driver as it just relied on the built in windows driver. The before I had the issue of a slow system a while back, the mouse worked perfectly fine! Over a slow period of time the side usb ports stopped working for only the mouse (every other thing like the external HDD etc worked) then eventually the back ones wouldnt work for it either. Im using the mouse right now on my other laptop which also has the same version of windows installed and also tested it before hand on other os's and it all seems fine. Ive uninstalled the unknown driver for the mouse, restarted pc etc and it didnt do the trick unfortunatly. Ive also done a system restore to when the mouse was working fine but still it had no effect!!! I bought driver magician and updated all the drivers so maybe is there some sort of fault with my USB ports or could the windows usb mouse driver be corrupt in some way?
  13. OK ive uninstalled the 'unkown mouse' under the mice section and plugged it back in. It then said installing unkown hardware and shows an exclamation mark next to it. Before, the usb mouse worked straight away as soon as it was plugged in. Thanks
  14. Hello Do you mean I should uninstall all the usb host controllers, hubs etc? There arent any yellow question marks. Thanks
  15. At first after reinstalling windows a few weeks ago my mouse worked fine untill it came to a point where it wouldnt work on the side usb ports on my laptop and only on the back ones. now it doesnt work at all. Ive bought a new mouse and that didnt work and tried an infra red mouse/keyboard one that works for a while then suddenly stops working although on the IR reciever it shows it recieving movements from the mouse. If i leave any of the mice plugged in overnight i always get a BSOD. Any ideas? Thanks
