Thanks for advice will give it a go when installing these programmes will they interfere with the Norton security centre

My computer operates on windows xp home edition and has started acting erratically when I access the internet it began my occassionally being disconnected and now the problems have escalated. I am experiencing regular pop ups and messages informing me I have new messages or have won a prize which I always ignore. I am now getting Messages from my Norton security center telling me that It has experienced attacks on my computer from such things as downloader and fakescan webpage. Whenever I scan my computer with the Norton Security centre it never finds any threats but Iam concerned that my computer has become infected I am a complete novice and need help.
