I'm trying to get Vista 64 bit so it will recognize my 4gb of memory. EDIT: In System Properties it shows that I have 4gb but when I go into the taskmanager it only shows 3gb. https://om.one.microsoft.com/opa/Validation.aspx?StoreID=37eb3052-7e03-4ce7-bee0-7f8e478f92c9&LocaleCode=en-us&JavaScriptOn=yes I used that link which I got from microsoft.com. I typed in everything and it said No Offer Found. Hm.... So I retried... same thing. Perhaps I mistyped my serial number....So I enter the serial number in again and now I get "Number of retry attempts succeeded"... :| Has anyone been able to get 64bit vista from this website? Also, will C8 Dreamspark ever carry Operating Systems? More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds

I was thinking, it would be cool to have a Summer of Code like thing by Microsoft where students work on open source projects in .NET over the summer and get paid for it.. Basically if you are a student and you like .NET and want to work on an open source project in the Google SoC, you have to apply to the Mono project and compete for what is a very limited number of slots compared to the other programming languages. Thus .NET is very much underrepresented in this event. So what this is doing is encouraging students to learn other languages like Python. More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds

A serious web-application I wrote for a client features the ability to change colour schemes. It started off with a fairly conservative Grey theme and a Blue theme (modelled on Outlook 2003's Luna Blue colours). Then one of the users of the application requested a "Pink... Hot Pink" theme, jokingly going on about gender discrimination since it had Blue, but not Pink. Since I've already recieved my cheque for the application, I decided to defenestrate all pretense of being serious. So I crafted together this horror. I've been told by no less than two people it looks like a cross between an emo band website and a pórn site. Comments? More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds

Ok, I've run into a scenario at work which I think is a little weird.* Our chief tester (leads the group of three testers at our small company) found out that a developer was running a test against the test database (he was repeating a test that had failed, using the same data that the tester had used, but giving a bit more depth to the test given his greater knowledge of the code)*-- the lead tester went absolutley mental and stated that he wants developers banned from accessing the test database. To me this is ludicrous (developers are not allowed to see the results of failed tests in order to figure out what the bug was). I've never come accross this before*in any of the companies I've worked for (including the medical systems that sailed past the FDA).* Our lead tester claims that in every company he has worked for (three previous companies on his resume) developers would be disciplined for accessing the test database. I don't see the difference between a developer running a test and a tester running a test.* I fail to see what the issue is. For those of you that work with a dedicated test department, is this a normal scenario? I should point out that our testers do very little automated testing -- it's 99% manual.* They also don't do any performance testing (we use performance logs on our customer's systems to trace performance). Any thoughts? Herbie More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds

Is there some secret trick everyone does to enable sharing in vista? In earlier ms os's - once you went under sharing - and said share C full - it was shared. So long as your workgroup was named correctly - you could go to any machine and type \machine-name\c* and it would work. With Vista on 3 machines and 2 laptops - sharing is hit and miss. For one it asks for a password. I do not want a password on any of my machines - but to apise the sharing gods - i added one.* Now i can get to my old machine from this new one - but not the other way around (even though i added a password to all of them.) Does adding a "Machine description" cause this?* is there some obvious trick you all do - that is undocumented but works? My brother emailed me with the same problem 5 machines - all drives shared full.* all on workgroup "Workgroup" All with passwords... Some work - some dont. *Ive posted about this before - but i never did fix it / figure it out ? ps - the only machine that shares everywhere is sever 2003 machine .. go figure More...
