  2. I just started using VS2008 and build time just went to hell in a handbasket.* I am referring to when I deploy the application.* No matter if it is to the emulator or a device (it is a Windows Mobile app), the initial build phase went from a few seconds to several minutes.* I am thinking that VS2008 rebuilds all, even those components that are not out of date, whereas VS2005 only rebuilt the out-of-date components.* Is this the default behavior of VS2008, and is there a way to fix it? * More... 5. Viewarticle... I sometimes wonder why the hell things like this weren't invented a long time ago :) I don't quite know why I'm posting this; I just find it funny that we're at the height of technology; yet simple things like this continue to make me think: wow, that is cool - but why not sooner? (I think I may bork the CSS again) Nope :) More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds

  7. today I bought another eee PC, this time for my GF, unboxed it and turned it on for the first time. I insert the SD where I copied her music and documents and an error appears on screen: "You do not have enough permissions to read /media/MMC-SD" and the file manager doesn't show the memory card content until I select "show all filesystems". I investigated and found out the /media directory did not exist and after a few minutes of google-ing I found out that error was pretty common and was fixed by creating the folder so I just sudo-ed a mkdir to create the directory. then I read that asus released an update, "desktop update", to address that problem along with some other improvements so I try to install it, wait a few minutes and another error appears: "Unmet dependencies. Try ‘apt-get -f install’ with no packages (or specify a solution)." so I open another terminal, do a sudo apt-get -f install and the package installs fine. so I applied that and tried some of the other available updates: "media player update" and "open office update": the desktop update screwed up the the desktop icons (some disappeared, some are now black) and firefox stopped working (reboot didn't fix this, it fixed only the black icons), the media player update didn't complete (Couldn't find package asus-media-player-update-1), the open office update made open office disappear ("KDEInit could not launch ‘ooffice’.: Could not find ‘ooffice’ executable."). applying every update also wasted significant disk space that couldn't be recovered with apt-get clean. I didn't experience any of these problems on the first eee I bought because I formatted it immediately but if that's what asus calls "easy" they sure have a long time to go. now I deleted that crap and installed eeeXubuntu: much, much better! 11. I am an experienced .net windows developer looking to learn Asp.Net. I have the book Pro Asp.Net 2.0 in C# 2005 but it is not an enjoyable read. I would like a book that is enjoyable to read. A lot of tech books are about as fun as reading MSDN Library.* I don't want a book that assumes the reader is*a complete idiot and feels more like a kids picture book than a programmers guide. 15. It looks like Long Zheng's been trawling the MS job boards again. This time he's found an opening on a team that will build a next generation native code UI platform for Windows 7. I seem to remember him (or someone) finding a similar job post a while back, but that one sounded more like an internal use library. This time it defintely sounds like it's for public consumption. With Silverlight coming from one side, and now this new framework coming from the other, I'm starting to wonder what niche plain old WPF will be relegated to in the next several years. More... 21. I'm in need of some IP geolocation, where I can preferably figure out latitude/longitude coordinates for a given IP address, or city and country information for said IP address. Either as a webservice, or as a database I can host and write my own web service for.*There's a bunch of things out there, but they're either incredibly expensive (like ip2country or maxmind), or inaccurate, like ip2location. There's also IPligence, but their free database only contains info per country, and the lat/long one is $200. Preferably, I'd spend $50 to*$80 a year, tops. Anyone who can recommend something? 22. Here are some quick facts: - 20-year work-in-progress - A team of 7,000 physicists from more than 80 nations - 27 kilometers in circumference, 175 meters underground - facilitating head-on collision of protons, traveling very near the speed-of-light - each tunnel is big enough to run a train through it. - temperatures generated: more than 1000,000 times hotter than the sun's core - superconducting magnets are cooled to a temperature colder than in deep space "We don’t even know what to expect," says French physicist Yves Schutz. 24. Has anyone here experimented with modelling XML (or some reasonable subset of the XML Information Set) as SQL tables? I know there are support for XML in some databases, but for those that don't have support, how'd you do it? [Actually the underlying database does support it, but the application platform over it does not.] I'm thinking the simplest solution is to have a nodeId, a nodeParentId, a nodeName, a nodeType (att, elem, text, cdata, pi, comment, ...) a nodeValue and possibly some more (maybe XS types). Binary nodes could be encoded as BLOB and output as Base64 encoded text. However, if you had such a structure it would be very convenient to also have an XPath implementation to query over it. That would be the next problem... More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds
