  1. My roommate (Ixdatul) and I just spent a day and a half reorganizing our home computer lab. All in all, over $1300 in new equipment has been set up, and we're better for the experience.* Has anyone out there done anything similar, and/or have a special room in your house for these functions?* Let's see them. 3. I was chatting to a friend the other day, who is really excited about getting into iPhone development (though less than happy that he may have to buy a Mac to do it.) I still think that charging developers 30% of their sales is positively vampiric, but he reckons that Apple is being quite generous. How in the hell has the mobile app distribution channel become so screwed up? More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds

  8. Does anyone know how a C Programmer would go about learning Fortran, specifically Fortran 90? I learned today that the software that my lab uses for molecular dynamics simulations is written in Fortran and if I want to do anything to make it run faster, I will need to be able to read and write Fortran. Before anyone suggests it, there are no courses on Fortran offered by my university's computer science department, so taking a class on Fortran is not an option. I even checked the graduate courses and there are none on Fortran. More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds

  11. Bruce Kyle of Microsoft and Stuart Celarier of CheckFree explore the new languages features in C#. It's a whirlwind tour of the important language features since C# 1. Stuart describes the feature and why it is useful. But doesn't get into best practices nor suggested usages. Just the facts about the feature. Whirlwinds are bite-sized webcasts, each is shorter than 15 minutes. You can start anywhere in the series to learn about the parts you're most interested in. In Part 2 about iterators, Stuart compares iterators with enumerables, describes the advantages of iterators, and tells how you can use the yield keyword to simplify iterating through your complex objects. This feature is part of C# 2 in .NET 2.0. Duration: 9:05 You can find out more about the language features in C# at Stuart's blog: VisualStuart.net Previous Whirlwind episodes Whirlwind 1 Generics is also a feature in C# 2 in .NET 2.0. http://channel9.msdn.com/Photos/391143.jpg Watch the screencast(WMV) More... 14. I have been wondering about the performance characteristics (space, time) of current VM's. That is VM's like CLR, JVM, AVM2, NekoVM, etc. The CLR must have an advantage over JVM because it has run-time knowledge of generic types whilst Java generics is erased at compile-time and turned into casts, unless something has changed as of late. My qualms with Java was the lack of compile-time generics support, meaning you'd have to generate a List, Dictionary etc. to get optimal performance, but really, since types are the typing is available at compile-time, some of these structures should auto-generated. Maybe they are, today? I had a discussion about the topic of VM performance today and got the comment from some colleagues that Java performance sucks. I'm more of the oppinion that Java performance with collections might suck (?), and it might be a memory eater (?), but you could always work around some of the issues - at least the collections issue. In addition there are libraries for primitive types, last I checked. This was one of the problems early on with Java - because of the lack of a unified type system, it meant that you couldn't make an ArrayList and get array-like performance because the would get erased and boxed into an Integer, or something similar. It's probably not that easy to measure performance but how do you see the (current) strengths and weaknesses of JVM vs CLR - and other VM's - and where are things going? More... 17. As much as I'm inclined to believe Microsoft changed their policy from issuing full versions of software to just 365-day trials because of tax reasons (or so explained one of the organisers when I expressed my disappointment at the end of the day), I can't help but think that maybe they're catching on to people abusing the licenses. Still, even if the WS2008 and SQL2008 were 365-day trials, the main shame is that the VS2008 is Standard and not Professional. Since the majority of my dev work is web-based (and I use a LAN IIS rather than local) this is useless to me as Standard doesn't support Remote Debugging. And I also scored yet another 365-day evaluation copy of Windows Vista. Whilst the event is free, and I really don't have a right to complain, I am seeing a shift from these launch events from Useful Days to just Advertisement Promotions. Still, I'm with Irascian in saying it's better than MIX ;) So in conclusion, rather than being issued with WS2008 Enterprise Trial and I'd be perfectly happy with WS2008 Standard full. Or just VS2008 Pro on its own. Fortunately I can nab VS2008 off MSDNAA come September, but still... major disappointment here folks. BTW, the talk at the end by the guy from MSR: was great :) More... 22. I was wondering the above since Vista is no longer in the hands of the Windows engineers team.* Will it be handed over to support for patched until Windows 7 (result of the XP SP2 delays=delayed Vista=Vista as OS stopgap?) and then moved into support, extended support, etc. or will there be SP2 and SP3 etc like XP with new features, ie security, UI enhancements?* Input from the MSDN team is welcomed. 23. I’m trying to port a headless application developed in ‘C’ on an RTOS to CE. The hardware has a custom memory mapped interface with the major block of I/O devices. Because the base hardware became obsolete, we are merging the custom hardware with a BSP supporting WINCE in an attempt to minimize the turnaround time. The original plan was to port the existing drivers for the custom hardware using native mode. There are references to the native mode being accessed through the GWES, but I have not had much luck in locating relevant information and no luck finding code examples. Current development is C/C++ 6.0 on CE 6.0 under VS 2005. Any help would be much appreciated. More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds

  25. Could anybody explain the 4n-X part to me? I'm completely lost. I've got a homework in tomorrow concerning it (last minute, I know, don't call me on it). I know the rest, L(T)=n + (N-g)+(N-2g)+(n+1), but there's also some "simplified" equation I'm supposed to write about, concerning 4n-X, or 4n-X+1 etc. I'm sure somebody knows what I'm on about :P More...
