My old netgear did not have its own firewall and offered "freedom firewall" to download on the disk at setup. That might be what he is referring to... My new netgear has its own built in firewall.

Thanx for moving my post, wasn't sure where to put it. :) I think you are right, it probably is failing but everything the previous poster said happened to me. I also had a power failure, they are common where I live. I have a APC battery backup which shut my computer down and thats when it started happening. I went to maxtor and downloaded their diagnostic and it found 2 minor problems in the registry, fixed it and all was fine. Few days later the hard drive was missing... thats a shame as my hard drive is less than a year old because my 2 year old hard drive quit on me. I find it odd that 2 hard drives are failing in such a short period of time. I have another computer that is 9 years old that still uses the same off brand hard drive with no problems.

I'm having the same problem with my maxtor SATA 2.... has been going on for a couple months now. When I continuously shut my computer on and off, it eventually sees the hard drive. I have no idea what it is... clm9944 is referring to this thread. Edited by RandyL
