I couldn't find a firewire mouse but I did manage to resolve the problem with ERD Commander 2005. The software allowed me to go back to a previous restore point. Thanks for all the help. If anybody else manages to have the same problem I hope this update may help them.

Looked at the article. I couldn't install it even it it was the correct fix. I can't access the computer without a mouse or keyboard. Thanks for the idea though. I will have a further look around on the web site.

The mouse and keyboard are not wireless, just your normal type USB. Correction to original post. The driver the computer is trying to install is for the Universal Serial Bus Controller.

Hello again. I tried disconnecting all USB devices and using only the mouse or keyboard plugged in. Still no joy. Tried the Last Known Good Configuration. Still the same problem

Hello. I tried to update my USB driver on my PC. It came up with an error and the mouse and keyboard no longer work. Both are plugged into USB ports. The computer does not have a PS/2 port. When the computer now starts up it says new hardware found and asks for permission to search for drivers. Can't accept/cancel request due to the mouse/keyboard no longer working. The computer is an Acer L100 running Windows XP Media Edition. I tried a reboot. No joy. Tried reboot in safe mode. Same problem. The keyboard works fine with the BIOS. USB is enabled in the BIOS. Any advice would be welcome. Lee
