PC freezes after ejecting CD

PC still locking up after ejecting CD Both the new CD Burner, and the original one, after ejecting a CD, will lock up the computer, nothing, kybd and mouse don't work, 3-fingered salute won;t work...... What could possibly be the problem? I would hate to have to reformat the HD, I would lose a lot of data, even tho I have an external 250 Gb HD. :( Steve -
ok, but pages take forever to load The new look is fine, a little more cheerful, but the pages take forever to load, and I've got a fast DSL connection. :D Steve aka testmg80

PC freezes after ejecting CD
testmg80 replied to testmg80's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Well, all seems better with the original CD Burner, I played 2 music CD's, copied some files, performed a lot of operations, no freezing up. I could still like the reason why the PC would freeze after ejecting. I put good money into the new drive and would want to use that. Thanks, Steve -
PC freezes after ejecting CD

No, the old burner never had that prob. hate to switch burners now, the new one along with the correct device driver seems to copy files fine, I'm not usinng Roxio anymore - Windows has it's own function of copying files. I'll switch drives 2morrow and see what happens. Steve P.S. Can't seem to find the old burner just yet, so it'l have to wait til 2morrow anyway -
After my original prob of the computer crashing while copying files, I have a new problem -- After ejecting a music CD, the PC freezes and And the mouse and kybd won't do anything. I have a Dell Windows XP SP3 with 2 Gb RAM (used to have 4 Gb, was told to take it out), 1 Gb Video RAM, 2.8 CPU, DVD player, and brand new CD Burner. Any Ideas anyone? Steve

CD Drive crashes PC after copying files.
testmg80 replied to testmg80's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Issue Resolved? I contacted Dell Tech Support online and they re-installed a Device Driver -- fltmgr.sys which seemed to clear up the prob. We also tested the CD burning while copying files to it, using Windows Burn Utility or something like that, that I didn't know about. No need to format CD's like Roxio likes to do. I also removed 2 of the 4 GB of RAM. Seems to run ok now, maybe a little slow for my choice but it's 2 years old. All seems quiet now. Thanks guys. :-) -

CD Burner still crashing computer after copying files to it Does anyone have any ideas about why my CD Burner crashes the PC after writing files to a CD. I get a black screen, then the BSOD with the error: ox804fb02c, IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL The Cd Burner is brand new, the 2nd one I've had in there. Any ideas? I'm desparate :( Steve -

I'm not sure what you mean by 'burning a CD', I'm just trying to copy some files to a CD for backup, right now I decided to use my 250 Gb ext. HDD for backup. PC still crashes after trying to copy files to CD, plus one of the other 2 CD burn programs thinks all my CD's are read only. It's also difficult to get to the RAM chips 10 or so times a session (I have 4 Gb) Thanks guys, I appreciate the feedback, Steve -

Thanks for all the assistance guys, I really appreciate it. I learned a lot giong thru these probs. And no, i'm not giving up, just put it on the back burner for a while. :D -
CD Drive crashes PC after copying files.
testmg80 replied to testmg80's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
A total loss I lost the whole CD Burner setup; I installed Nero8, which froze the screen twice in a row; I un-installed that -wouldn't even start. I then installed CDBurner XP, that made all my CD's Read only; 1/2 of Roxio is gone (uninstalled- I need some parts of it for my DVD player.Plus, CDBurner XP locked up the mouse and kybd, I must have had to unplug the PC 20 times. Anywhere I can get a freeware copy of Sonic Roxio? Major Geeks.com maybe. Steve -

Roxio always wants to format a disc, whether it's a CD-R/W, or a CD-R. A big pain. Think I'll uninstall it. -

I've tried 2 CD drives, the original one, and a brand new one. If I install Nero or CDBurnerXP, should I un-install Roxio (Sonic); it always wants to format a disk B4 using. I'let you know when I get one or the other installed. Steve -

CD Drive crashes PC after copying files.

Roxio Roxio is my default burning program, it won't let me copy files unless the CD has been formatted. Problem is copying files to the CD, I've done it a zillion times B4 (I have backups of backups). I do however have a copy of Nero 8 which came with the CD drive, think I should try that? Also, I've tried copying files in Safe Mode Command Prompt only - Same Prob. I'll check out the site you listed. Do you think I should un-install Roxio DLA? -

CD Drive crashes PC after copying files.

First off, thanks to everyone who gave me advice on getting my CD-Burner to work, esp. Seth :D I was hoping a brand new drive would solve the following problem: Whenever I copy files to a CD, 1 file or 100 files, after it's done copying, the screen goes black, then the B.S.O.D. with a ton of writing on it, something about a hardware prob? Dump of physical memory. I've got 4 Gb of RAM and a 1 Gb video board. Also, the fan speed goes waaaaay up and the pc has to be unplugged to shut it off. Any ideas? -
Probs with CD Burner not working
testmg80 replied to testmg80's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
It works! Thank You Seth, I took out the battery for 30 Mins. as you suggested, put it back in, still get an error message about "Drive 1 not found, Press F1 To Continue" and I got this far. First thing I did was test the DVD drive, then the CD drive, both work. PC seems to be running a bit slower than normal, so I may have to some cookie and spyware cleaning. Thank You Again, Steve :) -
Probs with CD Burner not working
testmg80 replied to testmg80's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
OK, here goes... Here goes the sequence of troubleshooting: Bought a brand new EIDE CD Burner, same problem Checked to see if DVD player worked, nope, because CD won't work. Checked the Jumper settings, both set as Cable Select, tried variations, nope, put them back on Cable Select. Error message on Startup with CD Burner unplugged: Drive 1 Not Found-Serial ATA, SATA-2 Drive 2 Not Found-Parallel ATA, PATA-0, Primary IDE Master Drive 3 Not Found-Parallel ATA, PATA 1, Primary IDE Slave F1 to Continue, F2 for Setup. Boot Sequence is A:, C:, CD Computer works Fine! pressing "F1 to continue", except for CD of course. With CD Burner plugged in, PC won't go further then the Dell Logo, stops right there. Think maybe a cable prob???? Afraid to to disconnect CMOS battery, might lose something. Any further ideas. I'm lost. oh, btw, dis-connected Zip Drive and Ext. HDD, cleaned the CPU fan and Heat sink. -

It won't boot if I leave the CD plugged in. If I disconnect the cable, pc will boot, but not normally (i.e. Press F1 to Continue) It tells me my hard drive is not enabled now I'm really confused. -
Probs with CD Burner not working
testmg80 replied to testmg80's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
I have 4 Gb of RAM and 1 Gb of Video RAM, I back up the System State (about 550 Mb) and misc .jpg's and photos, datafiles, never more than 80 Mb at a time (Rare), average backup is about 1 Mb. What I can't figure first is why neither CD burner will work, i.e. keep the PC from booting up. Something happened when I pulled the old CD Drive out and put the refurbished one from Dell in. I then practically chewed them out and ordered a Brand New drive. Driver prob maybe? -
Probs with CD Burner not working
testmg80 replied to testmg80's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
CD Drive not working PC is clean inside, DVD Drive is a player only :( prob now is getting the CD to work, then worry about PC toasting itself after backup of files. S. -
I'll try to make this brief and to the point: I've had my Dell Windows XP SP3 machine for 2 years now. Lately, upon copying my backup files and other files to a CD, when finishing copying, I would get a black screen, then the BSOD with a bunch of writing on it relating to hardware issues, no error codes. Fan speed would kick up to max, and the only way to shut off PC was to unplug it. It would play any Music CD just fine, no probs. Prob 2: I ordered a new CD from Dell, they sent me a re-furbished CD/DVD combo drive.I installed it, PC wouldn't get past the Dell logo on startup. Dis-connected the drive, now when pc starts up, it tells me the drives are not activated, or press F1 to continue. Checked the BIOS setup, looks fine. Computer works fine, but no CD. I put the old CD drive back in, same prob. btw, I have a 80 Gb SATA drive, and a 250 Gb external usb drive, floppy drive, Zip Drive, DVD drive, haven't tried that yet. Any Ideas? Also, I ordered a Brand New drive from Dell, waiting for that to arrive. Thanks for your patience reading this long post. Steve
