  5. no error message, when i boot up, the dual boot options come up, but when i choose xp, the screen goes black, and nothing further happens, as you mentioned, this must be because i deleted the xp option. no the cd drive doesnt load. i can hear the disc spin when inserted, but it doesnt load...
  6. afraid not, its a dell and came preinstalled without one. it wont boot from dvd drive first, even though i've set that option in the bios, i was gonna use a linux cd if it did to try and get into the system...
  7. Hi KenB, Thanks for your rreply. I had the c drive partitioned and xp is the primary operating system. My son got a new laptop, and i am trying to put the old one back to its original state. i uninstalled windows 7 first and then tried to get rid of it showing up on start up. is there any way to undo the deleted line from boot.ini. I realised too late that i shouldn't have deleted it, but hindsight is a wonderful thing.....doh!
  8. Hi, I was trying to get rid of a dual boot option on start up(i had xp and windows 7 installed), and foolishly deleted a line from boot.ini, as read in the following guide(it was the bottom line in my boot.ini text file that looked similar to the one listed) Screen just goes black when xp is chosen on start up. I have a dell inspiron 6400, it didn't come with a operating disc. I am able to get into the bios, and changed the first boot option to dvd drive, but it doesn't work. any advise would be greatly appreciated. 9. thanks i just want to thank you wolfie and everyone who posted to help, love your site, keep up the excellent work,:D
  10. afraid not wolfie :eek:call me naive and not pc savvy, it's my first pc, i don't know how to, but as soon as i can get this sorted........... i never expected to have this kinda problem with a newish pc.
  11. hiya dalo :confused:the operating system came pre-installed, i can't use the advent repair cd to do this? (sorry if that's a daft suggestion)
  12. hiya dalo :(there are two slots, the pc came with 1 stick of 1mb, i upgraded it by buying two 2mb sticks. i have tried putting the old 1mb in both slots and even one of the 2mb in both slots, but same outcome. i didn't notice any sounds leading up to all this, but there is a strange couple of clicking sounds happening now after boot up
  13. hi wolfeymole, as previously mentioned, i have tried different memory,so it must be the hard drive, but is it strange for a pc of just over a year old to have a failed hard drive already?
  14. i have tried all that wolfey, i have the pc configured to boot from the drive first, that's where i've been saying i'm getting the BSOD after the white bar finishes loading and just when the small green blocks load for about nine times then the dreaded blue screen. i tried taking out the small battery today and leaving it out for a couple of hours. i also disconnected both cables from the hard drive, i tried the older 1mb of memory again, but same old same old, is there no way to get past the blue screen error?????
  15. hi seth 1. the advent disk has system recovery DVD-ROM- the software included on this DVD-ROM came pre-installed on your pc at the factor and may only be used for back up and recovery of your advent pc.-ADVT9308UKDVD1REC VERSION T9308 DVD for distribution only with a new advent pc microsoft windows vista home premium 32 bit 2, no 3. only above dvd 4. no not since this has happened, it just goes past the big white load bar and onto the black screen with the small green loading blocks and then BSOD i have already downloaded and tried the recovery console, but it does the same as the recovery disc. i only have a lap top so can't try it in any machine, it looks like i have two options 1. buy a new hard drive(which i don't want tounless i'm sure that's what the problem is or 2. bring it to pc world and pay for a health check and/or pay for what ever's wrong to be replaced. i would get more satisfaction being able to fix it myself but my knowledge is limited- to put it mildly
