  1. He does say the document was deleted so I assume he is using one of the file recovery softwares available. Must point out that if any other activity after the deletion, there is a good chance the original document may have been written over, making recovery even more difficult. Nev.
  2. Hi, some confusion here, could do with some more information here as to what you are doing. However trying to see where we are and reading between lines a little, first I will clarify some things. When ever a file is created the time and date is created with it and yes, when the computer is shut down that file is stored on the hard drive, complete with that time and date. If the computer was out of sync with real time in the zone it is in doesn't matter, if the computer thinks it is 17-2-2011 at 22-00, that will be stored with the file and will not change when the computer is reset to the right time. I hope that helps, Nev.
  3. I am also a bit out of my depth on this one. Shutting down in whatever way during a checkdisk is certainly not good, but may in the end have to be done. As to whether it will get far enough to go down the repair rout when restarted I just don't know. I am hoping one of our other members may have found a way round this problem, as I cannot be sure. Nev.
  4. Hi again, the suggestion from Goku may be the answer. I mentioned this to a friend who also works on computers, he found this happening after doing a reinstall of Windows, the cure he found was another reinstall as it seemed a possible corruption of a file in the first reinstall. Nev.
  5. Normally it would do all as you would expect as in the first time you did this, but on a different machine. Quit often there is a disk for the operating system, which seems to have gone OK, but there should also be one for the drivers if not included on the first disk, this disk is quite often labelled that it is the drivers disk. Usually also, once the first disk has been installed you are prompted to insert the second. For the moment don't worry about not being asked for the product key, some reinstall or recover systems don't need it the second time of use. As for the missing drivers, will it connect to the internet at all? If so the system itself will look for them on line, but if it can't connect because those drivers are missing, you may have to download them using a different computer, transfer them to disk or flash drive and install them from that. However to point you in the right direction for those drivers we now need to know the full model number of the computer and any other details you can find. Nev.
  6. Thanks for the update, and glad to know that the reset of Internet explorer fixed a lot of things for you. Just for the record, those information boxes don't allow a copy and paste in general for some strange reason. One of these days I will find out why perhaps. However sometimes it is possible to get a screen shot of them which is like taking a photo of what you want anyone else to see. In XP it can be done using the print screen key, however that takes a photo of the entire desktop when all that is wanted is a small box, and is a little more complex to use as it involves more than just the key. It is better to use a small program which you can use to take a picture of just a small area. There are quite a few, but one I like is Mireks MWSnap. You can download it from here= Mirek's Free Windows Software There are three free downloads on that page, and the one you want is the middle one, though you may find the others useful too. Windows 7 has its own snipping tool which does exactly the same, so no need for a third party program with that OS. Nev.
  7. Hi, and welcome to Free Pc Help. Which type of reinstallation are you using? is it the disk that came with the machine? Or is it from a new XP disk OEM or full version? If it is by using the disk that came with the machine, it usually sorts all the partitions out itself as it goes through the reinstallation. Nev.
  8. Hi, I tend to agree with Frank, it is an advanced job dealing with screen or screen parts on most laptops, however if you do feel like having at least a look at it there is an extremely helpful laptop repair site here= Laptop Repair Help The Author does mention replacement of parts and diagnosing failure of the screen. Nev.
  9. When you put the battery back in does it start up straight away or does it stay off till the power button is pressed? If it starts straight away it could coincidently be the power button stuck down. The other possibility may be damaged pins in the HDMI socket from when you plugged the X Box in to it, though I fail to see why that should make it re-start. Nev.
  10. If there isn't a compatible plug/socket spare coming from the power supply, there is really only two ways of sorting this problem. The first and easiest is to send the card back and find one that doesn't need extra power connection. I fitted one to my XP machine that didn't need extra power so they are available. The other option and less easy is swap the power supply for one that does have compatible socket/plug spare on it. Nev.
  11. Hi, are there any other users of this computer? if so how many? If only yourself, have you set a password for any accounts, and are you sure you are using the correct one? If you followed all the instructions given in this link= Error 0x80070005 - Windows Live It should get you to the users and groups list, so try again to be sure, also where it says "right click" for any part of it be sure you have done so, let us know if still no good. All the best with it, Nev.
  12. Hi, I can speak for all in this, please devote your time to getting your personal problems sorted out, they are your main priority at the moment. The computer problems can wait, we aren't going to rush you. A burst causing that much damage is a mess, and wish you all the best in getting that sorted. Nev.
  13. My MSN junk mail box gets loads of them, plus all the stuff from so called medical suppliers. Being unmarried, I have no use for 'em. The important thing to remember is "does the genuine organisation have my e mail address?" In the case of UPS or other postal and parcel services, quite unlikely. They may have your real street address, but if they tried to deliver a parcel, they always put a notice through the letter box, "Did I find one on the matt?" if no and you know that you have never given out your e mail, it has got to be a scam. Nev.
  14. Overheating comes to mind as well, considering it seems to happen when game playing or watching a movie, have you had the cover off and looked to see if any dust build up? Nev.
  15. I doubt it is a motherboard fault due to installing Windows7. The keyboard fault could just be coincidental. If possible, is there any chance of trying that keyboard on another computer even a willing friends? or even borrowing one from them to try on your computer. That would give us some clue as to it being the keyboard itself faulty or some other issue. I just hope nothing else goes wrong while trying that:D Have you yet had chance to remove the sound card and clean the contacts as suggested? Nev.
  16. Hi and welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help Longy. The Message you are seeing, is that for some reason, Windows itself may not be seeing it. That could be due to a poor connection, so first try removing the sound card, wipe clean the contact strip on the card and reinsert it into the connector. Knowing that card I assume it is the PCI version and easy enough to remove the fixing screw to remove the card. Once sure it is properly installed, try it again. Let us know if that helps or not. Nev.
  17. Hi James, there could be many reasons for this but the first and most likely is overheating. Turn it off completely at the wall socket, but leave the plug in, that will minimise the risk of static. Remove the cover and check the cooling fans and fins for dust and fluff build up, if there is any, carefully remove it. Best to use a soft brush, then blow it out. Please don't use a vacuum cleaner, they can cause static, not to mention suck out components with the more powerful cleaners. Check that all fans are free to revolve. Providing you touch nothing, you can then turn it on to check the fans do run while the cover is off but once checked, turn off again and replace the cover. Let us know how you get on and if that helps before we try anything else. Nev.
  18. Unfortunately the world is full of trusting folk who fall for these. If there weren't the scammers would have given up a long time ago. There is also a very well put together one purporting to have come from the Halifax bank. Unfortunately I deleted mine so no copy to show how well put together it is. Any one not in the know who does have a Halifax account would fall for it. The only clue it isn't genuine, is that it is only addressed to my E Mail address, not me personally. Also, though I do have a Halifax account, Halifax do not have my E Mail address. They even cheekily said "To prove this is genuine we have included your post code", er, no they hadn't. To say it again, banks do not send out this sort of E Mail to anyone. Nev.
  19. We all learn something new Jay, I had an idea there had to be one, so went looking for you. Glad it sorted it for you mate. Nev.
  20. Hi Tobz, don't worry, either myself or one of our other staff will do the moving for you. Do you have either a recovery partition or recovery disks? What I would like you to do first though is follow all below as closely as possible please. Step 1 Download TFC by OldTimer to your desktop Please double-click TFC.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator). It will close all programs when run, so make sure you have saved all your work before you begin. Click the Start button to begin the process. Depending on how often you clean temp files, execution time should be anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or two. Let it run uninterrupted to completion. Once it's finished it should reboot your machine. If it does not, please manually reboot the machine yourself to ensure a complete clean. Step 2 Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop. Make sure you are connected to the Internet. Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application. When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings. When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked: Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware [*]Then click Finish. [*]MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. [*]On the Scanner tab: Make sure the "Perform Full Scan" option is selected. Then click on the Scan button. [*]If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button. [*]The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient. [*]When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found". [*]Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process. [*]Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found. [*]Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. [*]When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below) [*]The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM. [*]Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM. Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. Step 3 Download OTL to your desktop. if you have problems, try this download link: OTL Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted. When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output. Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check . . http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v708/starbuck50/new/newOtl2.png Now copy the lines in the codebox below. netsvcs msconfig %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe /md5start eventlog.dll scecli.dll netlogon.dll cngaudit.dll sceclt.dll ntelogon.dll logevent.dll iaStor.sys nvstor.sys atapi.sys IdeChnDr.sys viasraid.sys AGP440.sys vaxscsi.sys nvatabus.sys viamraid.sys nvata.sys nvgts.sys iastorv.sys ViPrt.sys eNetHook.dll ahcix86.sys KR10N.sys nvstor32.sys ahcix86s.sys nvrd32.sys symmpi.sys adp3132.sys /md5stop %systemroot%\*. /mp /s %systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles %systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /lockedfiles CREATERESTOREPOINT right click in the Custom Scans/Fixes window (under the blue bar) and choose Paste. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v708/starbuck50/new%20forum/scan-fix.png . Click the Run Scan button. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v708/starbuck50/runscan.png Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long. When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL. Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post them with your next reply. In your next reply, please submit: MBAM scan report Both reports from OTL Thanks. Once you have done all this it will probably be moved for you then, maybe some time tomorrow. Nev.
  21. Hi, in your first post you said that you managed to get into safe mode, F8 will have been the key to get there from first turning power on and before Windows starts to open. If you can then use system restore to some time before getting those updates, and then open Windows normally, this should have returned your computer to the condition it was at before and now without those updates there. If the recycling business starts again after that, then it is something else responsible and not the updates. When this computer was new were you at any time prompted to create system restore or recovery disks? If not there should be a system restore and hopefully also a system repair facility, this is normally accessed in Windows7 from the system restore and recovery panel. Let us know how you get on and we can hopefully guide you through a repair of the system if it proves necessary. Nev.
  22. Hi Tobz, welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help. This does indeed sound like some form of virus or malware, have you as yet used anything to find and remove it? If so could you tell us what Please? If it appears there is still some virus or other malware activity from your reply, this thread may be moved to the relevant malware removal section for one of our experts to have a look. If that is the case you will be sent a PM to advise you of that. Nev.
  23. Hi Jay, you do seem to be having some odd problems with your machine. Have a look here at this useful page regarding items at start up, = Windows startup programs. What are they? Are they required? How can I disable them? He mentions also a free utility called "Autoruns" this will look at your system and tell you all that is present at start up, you can download that from here= Autoruns for Windows Hope that is of help. Nev.
  24. Hi Bootsie, first, welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help. If you are new to using an internet forum all of that is understandable, for your help and information just click on this link below, Then also the link there, http://extremetechsupport.com/forum/introductions/7940-use-forum-and-post-new-messages.html I hope that is of help to you. I would also recommend you have a look at the rules. Those are just general things and outline what is acceptable and what isn't, similar rules are in place on most forums. Nev.
  25. In your first post you mentioned running AVG and Avast. Are they both still installed? Because of the way they work, two antivirus programs running at the same time will conflict with each other. If both are still installed, remove one of them, the conflicts may just be the cause. Nev.
