Hi, I also have little experience of disk labelling, however I can only say it depends on how much cash you have available against the desired finish. The printers designed to print direct to disk are expensive and if the slightly cheaper option of inkjet printer is used will leave you with a printed disk subject to deterioration if damp, just the same as ordinary inkjet on paper will run if wet. Printing to an adhesive label can be done and needs either software to direct the standard printer to print in the right pattern on the sheet, inkjet is OK as waterproofing spray can be bought as a way to finish the disk. Or a printer built that will handle disk printing without extra software. The next and possibly the best, both for value for money and finished product is the recent technology of Lightscribe as mentioned by Synapse. Although it does mean buying the correct disks for the job, plus also making sure you have the disk drive that can do it, it looks to be about the best for finish and price as the disks are not too expensive. pc hangs during video playback
Plastic Nev replied to simonh's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi, at the moment I am hanging my hat on the RAM being the fault, at the prices it won't be too expensive to buy two new sticks of the correct type as quoted by Randy. The power supply rating in watts should be on the label attached to the power supply, and is the only place you will find it. If that label is missing you are stuck, as it is one of the few things the BIOS or operating system doesn't have the capabilities to find normally. Nev. -
Windows failed to start
Plastic Nev replied to josephcave86's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hum, we seem to have swapped just about everything out except for three components now, one is the CD drive, so first off, pull all plugs from that CD drive and see what happens, there just may be some oddity in it pulling power supply voltage down till it has warmed up a bit. Next is that CPU, only a swap of that can prove it one way or the other. The only thing left after that is the power supply itself, Doubt it, but again a swap is the only way to be sure if the other two don't sort it. Nev. -
First, sorry you got caught with that so called registry cleaner software. I didn't look or I would have warned against it. However, the codec install you should try is the= k-lite_codec_pack_660_mega.exe I think that one carries all the most likely codecs you need. Don't worry that there may be some already on your computer, the new versions will just update the old. Nev.

Hi and welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help. I am no expert on HJT logs so I will ask one of our security guys to have a look, however you may be right that there could be something in there that shouldn't be. I can only see that you only have SpyBot S&D as your security which is not really enough these days and you could do with a full anti-virus and maybe one or two other anti-malware programs. However I will leave it to our security staff to advise. Nev.

Hi Stony, welcome, and hope we can help. Nev.

Hi Stony, follow Franks advice and instructions first. Just for information and knowledge, a codec is a small bit of software that helps to decode the information on the video, both video picture and sound. If the right codec isn't there the fault you have can occur. Let us know how you get on and any problems in downloading or installing the codecs, or if that doesn't cure it. Nev.

Hi achexi, from your first initial post it sounds a lot like a damaged card, please let us know if a new card fixes it. Sorry for the delay in getting any answer by the way. Nev.

Windows failed to start
Plastic Nev replied to josephcave86's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi, after a dig around in Microsoft I found this page related to that bad pool header message, most seem to point to a corrupt driver, but have a look at some of the answers and see if anything makes a connection. Search The Knowledge Base One answer from one guy was basically what you have already done, which is a total reformat of the hard drive and a reinstall of W7. Another had a problem with a driver associated with AOL. and some other entries are driver related. However in your case, you haven't got anything much more than those drivers W7 will have installed as it installed itself. You just might have a bad copy, might be worth trying to ask for a replacement, it isn't unknown for a windows disk to be faulty. Nev. -
Hi and welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help. Considering that all seems fine in safe mode, it suggests a conflict of some sort, however those are difficult to pin down. The obvious though is to not have more than one antivirus installed, also no more than one firewall, having two of either is well known for freezing machines. However if that is not the case, it can get trickier to pin down. First thing is find out what services are not running in safe mode. Next is to then go into normal mode and using the task manager close all the services that were off in safe mode. Then bring them back in one at a time till you get to the guilty party that is freezing the computer. Nev.

System completely unresponsive
Plastic Nev replied to seph88's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi, I would be looking to swap or at least do a full test on the power supply unit first, after all it is the easiest to swap out. Considering the PSU has several different voltage outputs, it is common for just one output to fail and not the rest, hence why fans run but nothing else will. Nev. -
System completely unresponsive
Plastic Nev replied to seph88's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi and welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help. Although fans and other things sound like they are starting up, the fact you no longer get any POST beep is a bit worrying that something has died on the motherboard, or the PSU. The only way forward would be a try of another PSU first, if no go then it may be the mother board. However there could also just be something amiss with other hardware. Try this, disconnect everything from the mother board except the power molex connector from the PSU, and the wires going to the start button, then turn the power back on, you should hopefully then get one or more beeps. Power off again then connect something, power back and try again until the beeps don't sound, whatever it is that was last connected will be the problem. If no beep with only power connected, it may be the board or the PSU. Nev. -
I have to ask, you say you installed Windows7 from the same disk. Which form or type of operating system and its license? I mean is it an OEM version, single, or multiple license.
-
Hi David, what type are these three different addresses, if they are for example all using the same ISP, I am afraid windows live mail will do exactly what it has done and the only way out would be to use a different program, for example Mozilla Thunderbird. Nev.

internet security running out ??
Plastic Nev replied to twedspeed's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi twedspeed, I have answered your questions in red for you. You will need the Norton removal tool which you should download from here= Download and run the Norton Removal Tool to uninstall your Norton product | Norton Support Ignore what it says about remembering your product key as you are not reinstalling Norton. You can also use Revo uninstaller to remove Norton, but you will have to disable all protection in Norton first. I hope that sets your mind at rest, but do ask for more if needed. Nev. -
A common problem with laptops, notebooks and netbooks is the socket the mains adapter plugs into, coming loose on the main board and breaking its connection. The repair is a soldering job and best left to a technician used to working on these sort of faults. As Beeceebee states, it should still be under warrant any way, so best to send it back. Nev.

A faulty update to the AVG free antivirus is disabling Windows 7 on some machines, notably those on 64 bit operating systems. More information here= AVG Free update wipes out Windows 7 machines | Security | News | PC Pro As yet AVG have not found a fix other than to do a system restore in safe mode, if it will in fact boot in safe mode. Hi, Can you tell us a bit more about the computer itself, I gather it already has Windows7 but on a small drive, am I right? If so did it come with any disks, or recovery partition? Did you make any recovery disks when you first got it if no disk came with it? It may be possible to install the original operating system onto the new higher capacity drive. Failing that, considering the upgrade disk has not yet been used, why not return it, get your money back or put it against, and buy a full retail version of W7, cost you less than buying and installing Vista or XP, which I am not sure if an upgrade from XP is an option anyway. The only thing I can see other than what has already been mentioned is the original memory, for the Acer one originally only has just over 500MB memory so you must have installed the extra 1GB. As you say they work OK in either machine, so I suspect it may be the original memory is causing a problem. If it is not removable as it isn't in most netbooks, it may need a technician to unsolder the connections for replacement. The only other suggestion I have is to try a complete reformat of the slow one and re-install the W7 Nev.

The Imedia series, though mine is the S1300 and perhaps a slightly earlier model, Belarc only tell you it is a Packard Bell motherboard, in my case the Imedia S1300. I have tried the PB website and found little of use regarding anything about the motherboard. After a search I find Everest may give us more details on the motherboard type so try a download and install of it from here= Download Everest Home Edition 2.20 Free - Everest Home Edition - a freeware system information, system diagnostics and benchmarking solution - Softpedia Though in my case Everest couldn't identify my motherboard, there may be a chance with yours. I can say though that my motherboard does have the PCI x16 slot, so a good chance yours has one. However, I can say that a higher rated power supply should still fit the case, though it may not mean much, there is certainly room inside mine, though there may be differences in the models that could alter that. Hum, well now now, lets get back on topic. Firefox is now at version 3.6.12 However there is a rumour that a new version 4 is already out in BETA mode and will be fully released soon. Early reports I have seen suggest that the BETA is proving to be very fast. Nev.

Hi, is the hard drive itself dead? or just the operating system? I am also trying to understand what you mean by putting windows 7 onto a disk. If it is the operating system from your computer you cannot install it on your friends computer. It isn't legal. When the computer that is faulty was new there should have been the option to create restore disks from the partition on the original hard drive and operating system, if that wasn't done, you may have to buy a new operating system install disk if the hard drive is either broken or badly corrupted. Using an external hard drive from 2 locations
Plastic Nev replied to paulespana's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi Paul, for the programs themselves have you looked into the EULA (License agreement) for each program you need to use? You may get lucky and find at least some will allow installing on two different computers. If you have the softwarwe disks available at work it will just be a case of borrowing the disk to tale home to install on your home machine. If working for yourself and not an employee, that will be all you need to do if the license gives you the right to install twice. If you work for an employer you should ask permission to do this, otherwise you may be considered as stealing company property. Nev. -
I think perhaps a bit more explanation of software licensing is needed here. Microsoft are very specific about how a copy of any operating system is used and I must point out that at no time do you or any one else actually own the operating system. That goes for any software as well, you are only licensed to use that copy. So if someone else bought a license for, as in this case XP home, and installed it on a computer, once installed has to be activated and then registered with Microsoft, and to the original person who bought the licence. He or she cannot then pass on that copy, even if it has been uninstalled from the original computer, at least not legally. If that copy is installed again and on a different computer, especially not the original machine, at the point when it has to be registered, even though it may activate OK, it will be flagged up as a possibly pirated copy, Microsoft will then refuse any rights to it. Although it is a bit like treading through treacle, I suggest fully reading Microsofts licensing conditions to fully understand what can and can't be done with any copy of any of their operating systems. Have a look here= MICROSOFT WINDOWS XP HOME EDITION (RETAIL) END-USER LICENSE AGREEMENT FOR MICROSOFT SOFTWARE That is for XP home, but the same terms and conditions apply for most all operating systems. However a quick edit to add, please take notice of section 13 as this may apply, if the software is transferred, and the previous user has removed all traces of it, it is possible to do, however, though it doesn't say so in the EULA, you may still have to get in touch with Microsoft and explain all the circumstances before they will allow full activation. Legally speaking, installing any operating system from Microsoft is not quite as easy as putting a record on a record player, or a CD into a CD player. Believe me they have it tied up in some very secure knots in order to try and prevent pirated copies from being used under the copyright laws. Nev.

Hi, when it starts as a hardware problem posted in the hardware section, but then moves on to software, or even if both are involved, we do tend to leave the thread where it started to avoid people having to search all over the forum. Considering that servers themselves aren't given their own particular section, perhaps a start in Miscellaneous Hardware Issues, may be the best, if you haven't started anywhere yet that is. Nev.
